Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Szmala of Patchogue
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
July 31 at the Suffolk Boat Club in Patchogue.
The couple have been residents
here for 49 years and Mr. Szmala is a
retired employee of Brookhaven National
Laboratory, Upton. The many relatives
and guests attending included some from
as far off as San Diego, Calif., Miami,
Fla., Denver, Colo., and others from New
Jersey, with four grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren from the Bronx.
Lambros Larry Paraschos, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lliac Paraschos of Wiggins Avenue,
has been named to the Dean’s List at
Southampton College. He is a member
of the class of 1974 of the liberal arts college.

James Bohuslaw, son of Mr. and Mrs.
William E. Bohuslaw of Sterling Avenue,
East Patchogue, has accepted a teaching
position at South Ocean Avenue Middle
School in the Patchogue-Medford School
District. He will teach sixth-grade social
studies. James graduated from the State
University College at Potsdam, N.Y. in
May, with a B.A. degree in secondary
history. He was named to the president’s
honor list during his senior year at Potsdam.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick A. Thomas of
Patchogue announce the engagement
of their daughter, Sandra, to Guy Newham,
son of Mr. and Mrs. William Newham
Jr., of Patchogue. Both Miss Thomas
and Mr. Newham are 1970 graduates of
Patchogue High School. Miss Thomas
is attending Suffolk County Community
College, Selden. Both she and her fiancé
are employed at Suffolk County Paper
Company in Medford. No date has been
set for the wedding.
Nick Arpino of Woodacres Road, East
Patchogue, attended the 40th annual
National Model Airplane Championship
July 26-Aug. 1 at the U.S. Naval Air Station
in Glenview, Ill. He won first prize in
the C Speed event.
While everyone was talking about
Apollo 15’s great landing, Michael Monaco,
12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Monaco
of Circuit Road, Bellport, was thinking
how he was going to make his own landing.
Michael and his friends were setting
off rockets at a field on North Howells
Point Road last Sunday evening. One of
the rockets went higher than the others
and got caught in a tall tree. Michael
decided to climb the tree, but had some
trouble getting down. As he went up
the tree the limb broke and Mike was
left up there. One of the residents called
the Bellport Fire Department. Before
you knew it there were three policemen,
the fire department snorkel, and a field
full of interested onlookers. At the end,
Michael was taken down by the men on
the snorkel and was carried away on the
shoulders of his friends. He was then
taken safely home. Splashdown accomplished.
Mr. and Mrs. David Karlen of South
Country Road returned from a trip to
St. Lawrence and the Thousand Islands
to bring their son, David, home. He was
attending the St. Lawrence University
Hockey School. Their daughter, Megan,
celebrated her 9th birthday Tuesday
with a picnic dinner at her home.
Marine Captain Jeffrey C. Coon of Bellport
has been graduated from the radar
systems course at the Marine Corps Air
Station, Beaufort, N.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Moger Williams
have moved into their new home on Beaver
Dam Road after their marriage July
3 in North Hero, Vt., at Mr. and Mrs. Clark
Williams’ summer residence. Mr. and Mrs.
Williams, who live on South Country
Road, returned home Friday.
Keith Lohman, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Lohman of South Country Road,
Brookhaven, spent last week at Lebanon
Valley Music Clinic in Annville, Pa.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Magnani and children,
Mark, Lynn, Lori and Nancy, of
Beach Street, recently toured Canada,
Maine and Vermont, traveling 4,000
miles with their camper. They did a lot
of sighting and fishing. While in Maine,
Mark learned woodcarving. He recently
joined Brookhaven Boy Scout Troop 4.

Mr. and Mrs. William Jamieson of Rider
Avenue, Patchogue, had as visitor for the
day, Aug. 12, their daughter-in-law, Mrs.
David Y. Jamieson of Fairbanks, Alaska,
who was on a brief visit to the Eastern
seaboard. The Jamiesons were meeting
their daughter-in-law for the first time.
Airman 1/c Kenneth G. Goll, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Gene Goll of Medford Avenue,
has been reassigned to the 37th Aerospace
Rescue and Recovery Squadron at
Da Nang Air Force Base, Vietnam. He is
a jet engine mechanic on helicopters.
Miss Rhonda White, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Albert White of North Prospect
Avenue, has been named to the Dean’s
List for the spring semester at Rider College,
Trenton, N.J.
Sister Mary Christine, formerly Anne
Jachowdik, daughter of Mrs. Blanche
Jachowdik and the late Anton Jachowdik
of Daisy Street, celebrated her 25th
anniversary of religious life in the Congregation
of the Daughters of Mary, New
Britain, Conn. The family celebrated the
occasion with a lawn party Sunday at the
home of her mother with 80 relatives and
friends in attendance. Sister Christine,
a graduate of Seton Hall High School,
holds a Bachelor of Science degree and
Master of Arts degree from Seton Hall
University, South Orange, N.J. She is
a math instructor at the Sacred Heart
Junior High School in New Britain.
Sergeant Frederick Maier, grandson of
Mrs. Roland Mamlock of Highland Avenue,
has been spending a 40-day leave at
home. He has now returned to Misana
Air Force Base in Japan. A Morse Code
intercept operator, he is stationed at the
base’s Security Wing 6921 and will return
home after a year more of duty overseas.
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Ettore of Park
Street, Patchogue, announce the engagement
of their daughter, Susan, to Louis
Monaco Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Monaco of Academy Street, Patchogue.
Miss Ettore is a 1968 graduate of Patchogue
High School. Mr. Monaco is
employed as a crane operator by his
father at the Patchogue Drainage Corporation.
Infantry Officer basic training of nine
weeks has been completed by Army Second
Lieutenant Albert F. Englehardt of Patchogue
at the Army Infantry School at
Fort Benning, Ga. He was being prepared
for the duties of a company grade officer.
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Natoli of Woodacres
Road, East Patchogue, have returned
home from a week’s cruise aboard the SS
Atlantis to Nassau and Freeport. Mrs.
Natoli was chosen “Mrs. Atlantis” for
the trip.
Mr. and Mrs. Santo DiNaro of Dunton
Avenue announce the arrival of their
first child on Monday, a baby girl, Joanna,
weighing 9 pounds, 2 ounces. Mrs.
DiNaro is a teacher at the East Patchogue
Elementary School.
Stacey Lynn Farmer celebrated her 1st
birthday with two parties, the first at her
home on Country Club Road, Bellport,
and the second on the family houseboat
at Davis Park. Among those who attended
were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter
Farmer; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Perry and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Farmer;
her great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Wruck; her uncle, Bruce Perry, along
with Judy Brown, Don Frick, Jennifer Weis,
Mrs. Arthur Weis, Ted Naus, Sharon, Margaret
and Denise Benincase, Rosemary Menzel, Jack
Brown, Kevin and Tim Reeve, Jim Zaloga, Nancy
Gilmore, Eileen Hickey, Donna Wyleczuk, Mike
and George Schordine.
The William Strickland family of Browns
Lane spent the weekend at the Freeport
home of Mrs. Strickland’s father to celebrate
his 82nd birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Rose of Gerard
Street entertained 24 guests at a barbecue
on Saturday. Those present included
friends and neighbors and the wedding
party who attended their daughter and
son-in-law’s recent wedding.
Idamarie Marino, 12, of South Country
Road won Best in Show with her dachshund
at the Westbury Kennel Club Dog
Show on Sunday afternoon.
Happiness was the keynote of the bridal
pose of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Anthony
Brandi after their wedding ceremony
July 10 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C.
Church, Patchogue. Mr. Brandi and his
bride, the former Miss Joann Carol Stella
of Bellport, are residing in Patchogue.
Both are teachers in local school districts.
Dawn Carl of Edgar Avenue, Brookhaven,
was guest of honor at a birthday party
given by her parents. Friends helping
her celebrate were: Chris and Bobby Love;
Audria and Scott Banglie; Jimmy and Billy Jankowski;
Eugene Nuccio; JoAnn Osteran; Peter
Somek; Philip and Michael Fishman; Ronald
Wilson and Nelson Briggs.
William Beebe of Kennedy Avenue, Blue
Point, and Gary Mawhinney of Bayport
Avenue and their dates, Miss Gail Roberts
of Middle Road and Miss Kathy Travers of
Pheasant Way, traveled to Westbury last
Wednesday to dine at the Viking Restaurant.
Miss Roberts was introduced to her
first eel.
Six young ladies from the area have
been selected to represent their schools
on the 1971-72 Abraham & Strauss Smith
Haven Teen Fashion Board. They are:
Ann Mullaney, Bellport High School; Dorine
Chandler, Sayville High School; Jackie
Carson, Seton Hall High School; Janice
Barlosky, Patchogue High School; Debra
Tuthill, James Wilson Young High School,
and Amy Mersereau, Sayville High School.
Each will serve for the entire year, helping
to create new teen events and will be
involved in the store’s ecology and community
service projects.

the NY Nets were in Patchogue last week,
over 200 youngsters and teenagers visited
their basketball clinic and begged for
autographs. The clinic was sponsored by
the Merchants Division of the Patchogue
Chamber of Commerce.
Miss Judith S. Gould, daughter of Dr. and
Mrs. Lawrence Gould of Shore Road, has
been named to the Dean’s List at Lesley
College, Cambridge, Mass., for the second
semester of 1970-71. She is in her senior
year at Lesley.
Basics have been completed by airman
Charles J. Russell of Patchogue at Lackland
AFB, Texas. He is being assigned to
Brooks AFB, Texas, for training and duty
in the civil engineering structural pavement
field.
Mrs. Jennie Byrne of East Lakewood
Street celebrated her birthday of Aug. 16
at a surprise party Aug. 14 at the home of
her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Malcolm Ryder of Baldwin. Besides the
family, other relatives from New Jersey,
Connecticut and Long Island were present.
On Aug. 16 another surprise party was
given at her son-in-law and daughter’s
summer home in West Meadow Beach.
Besides Mr. and Mrs. William Zebrowski and
son, Robert, present were Mrs. Byrne’s
grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Zebrowski, and also Mr. and Mrs. General
Lee Rains, with sons Billy and Gregory.
Mrs. Rains is Mrs. Byrne’s granddaughter.
Three local Army privates, Donald A.
Shepherd of Patchogue, Raymond J. Fox of
Bellport and John DiCarlo of Mastic Beach
recently completed eight weeks of basic
training at the Army Training Center,
Infantry, Fort Dix, N.J.
Miss Jane Potter, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Harmon Potter of Bellport, left Tuesday
to return to college at Antioch, Columbia,
Md.
Ainslie Walter of South Country Road will
be a dinner and overnight guest of Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Linz of South Kent, Conn.,
this Sunday. The Linzes are having a wedding
anniversary dinner party for actor
Frederic and Mrs. March, also of South
Kent. Other guests also include Ruby Keeler,
Bobby Van and Patsy Kelly, currently
appearing in the revival smash hit of “No,
No, Nanette.”
Mrs. Gloria Casto of Stephani Avenue,
East Patchogue, announces the engagement
of her daughter, Christine, to William
Klien, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Klien of
Country Club Road, Bellport. Both Miss
Casto and Mr. Klien are June graduates of
Bellport High School. Miss Casto is entering
Suffolk County Community College
this fall.
Miss Ann Worthington of Barteau Avenue,
Blue Point, returned to her home last Monday
after a two-week trip to Ireland with
her uncle and grandmother, during which
they toured many of Ireland’s famous
places.
Christopher Stocker of Suydam Lane
returned to his home yesterday, after having
spent the summer in Lexington, N.Y.,
in a dramatics camp.
Mr. and Mrs. James Marigo of Chestnut
Avenue, Medford, celebrated their 25th
wedding anniversary yesterday.

National Guardsman Douglas C. Hurst
of River Avenue, Patchogue, has been
commissioned a second lieutenant in the
New York Army National Guard following
graduation exercises Friday at the
Empire State Military Academy at Camp
Smith, near Peekskill. In civilian life he
is employed by Eloenosich Photo Optical
Industries in Garden City as advertising
manager for the instrument division.
Mrs. Marie Edwards of Norton Street will
be married to Andrew Komoroski of Rider
Avenue at 3 p.m. Saturday in St. Francis
de Sales R.C. Church, Patchogue.
Richard Rossman of Washington Avenue,
who is a member of the Patchogue High
School faculty, was one of 26 earth science
teachers who attended the intensive
Earth Science Workshop at the State University
College at Oneonta, Aug. 15-20.
Mrs. Rossman and their two sons, Drew
and John, accompanied him, letting
the weeklong jaunt take the form of a
delightful camping trip.
Miss Michelle Sardell of California, former
Patchogue resident, on Aug. 21 traveled
here by plane to attend as bridesmaid
the wedding of Miss Grace D’Antonio
and William Bentley of Bellport. Miss
Sardell is manager of a clothing store in
Laguna Beach, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Phoenix of Bailey
Avenue, Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Laurie, to
Bill Kieninger Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Kieninger of Pennsylvania Avenue,
Medford. A June wedding is planned.
Arriving for duty at Castle AFB, Calif.,
is Sergeant Joseph Harm of Patchogue. He
is an aircraft mechanic assigned to the
Strategic Air Command.
Navy Petty Officer 3/c Dennis M. Salvatore
of Patchogue was advanced to his
present rank while serving aboard the
tank landing ship USS Graham County,
homeported at Little Creek, Va.
Marine Lance Corporal Stephen G. Armstrong
of Patchogue has graduated at the
Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, Santa
Ana, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Temple of Munsell
Road, East Patchogue, celebrated their
12th wedding anniversary on Saturday
evening at Mickey Felice’s restaurant in
Patchogue.
Residents of the Bellport area considered
themselves fortunate last weekend
by escaping more serious damage from
the fringe gales of near-hurricane Doria.
A number of lovely large trees were
blown down but the damage could easily
have been disastrous.
Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Smith of Bellport
Lane honored their daughter, Karen, with
a party recently to announce her engagement
to Robert Maloney of Brookhaven.
An enjoyable evening was spent with
games and dancing.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur S. Stakes Jr., of
Fairway Drive and Gerald Buhl of Head of
the Neck Road returned Monday after a
pleasant weekend visit with Mr. Buhl’s
parents in Pittsburgh, Pa. Mrs. Buhl
returns today with daughters Sharon,
Josie and Jennifer, after vacationing for
two weeks in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Buhl’s
parents will be visiting with them for a
few days.
Daniel Bianchi, son of Mr. and Mrs. I.
William Bianchi Jr., of Bellport Lane,
returned Monday from a two-week visit
with friends in Caracas, Venezuela.
Mrs. Peter DiDio of Head of the Neck
Road gave a family birthday party for her
grandmother, Mrs. Charles Kerr, on her
81st birthday, Aug. 21.
Mr. and Mrs. William Rowland of Circuit
Road, Bellport, announce the engagement
of their daughter, Patti Jean, to
John Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Adams of Carman Boulevard, Brookhaven.
Miss Rowland, a graduate of Bellport
High School and Suffolk County Community
College, is employed as a laboratory
technician at Southside Hospital,
Bay Shore. Mr. Adams graduated from
Bellport High and Suffolk Community
College and will join the faculty at Lindenhurst
High School next month. An
Easter wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Glover and children,
Lenny and Diane, of Yaphank Avenue,
Brookhaven, recently spent a week
visiting Mrs. Glover’s brother, Master
Sergeant Charles Schaefer, at Bowing
AFB in Washington, D.C. They enjoyed
the many sights in Washington.
A surprise bridal shower for Miss Lynn
Rappe of Hawkins Lane was given by
Mrs. Edwin Rappe of Arlington, Va.,
at the home of Mrs. Blair Munhofen on
Beaver Dam Road, Aug. 24. Miss Rappe
will be married to William Hatfield of
Bellport Oct. 9.
The Medford Fire Department took
second place in the first annual Suffolk
County Volunteer Fire Department’s
Slo-Ball Tourney held in St. James Aug.
25-29. For his fine performance, pitcher
Jack Kennedy was selected as the most
valuable player of the double-elimination
tournament that attracted eight teams.
Port Jefferson won the tournament, nipping
Medford, 6-5, in eight innings in the
championship games. Team members
included Jack Kennedy, Bill Coyle, Butch Mistler,
Vic Diglio, Bob Mistler, Terry Nangle, Tom
Vaughn, John Rymer, Bob Hellem, Ken Kelly,
Pat Vaughn and Jim Masem. John Masem
Sr. was manager and John Masem Jr. was
scorekeeper.
