The winners of the annual awards for
exceptional Christmas decorations chosen
by the Sayville Garden Club have
been announced by Mrs. Allen J. Hoost,
chairman of the committee. In Sayville,
the first award for home decorations
went to Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Hawkins of
Puritan Road; the home of Mr. and Mrs.
F. William Uckert of 144 Suydam Lane
won the first award for Bayport; and for
business decorations in Sayville, A.C.
Edwards, Inc. of 48 Main Street, came
in first.
Adelphi announced this week that it
will open a four year liberal arts college
at its Sayville branch next September. A
graduate program on teacher education,
leading to the Master of Arts degree, will
be offered, according to President Paul
Dawson Eddy.
Pfc. George A. Style, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Marian Style of 167 Lincoln Avenue,
Sayville, was selected as “Soldier of the
Month” for Fort Totten in a post compe-
tition held recently.
Robert Gerrity, of 98 Elm Street, Say-
ville, commutes every day to Levittown
high school and teaches a group of
“budding geniuses” a three-year course
of advanced electronics. Mr. Gerrity was
an electronics engineer at Brookhaven
National Laboratory for the past three
years, working on the design and devel-
opment of the 35BEV atom-smasher.
Sayville librarian Elinor H. Haff wishes
for the library’s borrowers to make a
resolution to return their books on time
in 1960 to make ours a mutually Happy
New Year.
Jesse Vander Borgh of Candee Avenue,
Sayville, broke his ankle in a fall in the
snow last Tuesday. He is expected to
have it in a cast for two months.
Bayport High School’s cagers topped
Westhampton Beach, 55-49 in the open-
ing round of a holiday basketball tourna-
ment at Bayport on Tuesday night.
Lt. and Mrs. Craig Shand and two
daughters and son arrived on Wednes-
day night of last week from Whiting
Field, Fla., to spend the holidays with
Lt. Shand’s parents on Gerritsen Avenue,
Bayport.
There were many anonymous donors
whose thoughtfulness helped make the
altar at St. John’s Church in Oakdale
beautiful with flowers last Sunday. Red
and white poinsettias, holly, ivy, and
wreaths decked the church and were
given by Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Pickard,
Mr. and Mrs. James Dawson, Mr. and
Mrs. Jean Charest, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard
Lupetin, Mr. and Mrs. Walter La Frantz,
and the Voehl family.
Residents in Oakdale are enjoying the
articles written by Charles Jenrich, of
Shore Drive, who is an editor at the
monthly magazine, “Rudder.”
Miss Donna Pagels of Bohemia enter-
tained a group of her friends on Mon-
day at an after-Christmas luncheon. Her
guests were Claudia Quigley of Bayport,
Lucille Scharrer and Maureen Franck of
Oakdale, and Carol Sharko, Ruth Ann
Maliar, Diane Bertges and Susan Bosch
of Bohemia.
Playing this week at the new Sayville
Theater: “The Flying Fontaines,” star-
ring Michael Callan and Joan Evans; and
“The Miracle,” starring Carroll Baker,
Roger Moore and Walter Slezak.

One of five temporary offices established
by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles
for the convenience of automobile
owners will be set up in the Sayville
Fire House. Applicants for 1960 license
plates will be able to acquire them here
on Jan. 18, 19, and 20.
The Board of Education announced
yesterday that the controversial issue
of additional bus service for children
in the Bayport-Blue Point School District
will be placed before the district
taxpayers for a decision on Saturday, Feb. 27.
After being honored as “Policeman
of the Year” by the Suffolk County
Police Conference, Pfl. Alfred Greenwald,
a Sayville resident, spent a relaxing
Christmas at home with his two
favorite people: his 4-year-old daughter,
Patricia, and his dog, King.
Mrs. Frances Dempsey, administrative
assistant and guidance director, and
Laurier Begnoche, guidance counselor,
of the Sayville Junior High School,
have written an article for publication
by the Vocational Guidance Quarterly.
An extra-curricular course in the Russian
language is one of the features at
Bayport High School, where students
gather during their lunch period for
informal sessions taught by instructor
Paul Harenberg, of Oakdale. Miss Jean
Horndrup and Richard Weyhrauch are
among the students studying the difficult language.
Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rutkowski
of Fairview Avenue, Bayport, entertained
on Saturday afternoon for the 6th birthday
of their daughter, Robin. The birthday table
was decorated in pink and blue with
balloons and favors for the children.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth White of Cloverdale
Drive, Oakdale, entertained Mr.
and Mrs. Albert Wuytack of Central
Islip and their son, Claude, on Sunday.
Mr. Wuytack and Mr. White, who sail on
the Santa Maria, are both home during
the winter season.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Contrara of
President Street, Oakdale, had Major
James Altiera as their guest. Formerly
a comrade of Mr. Contrara’s in the Der-
by Rangers, Major Altiera is author of
“The Spearheader” which will soon be
published.
The Harrison family of Shore Drive,
Oakdale, are traveling to Disneyland,
Calif., to participate in a conference
on Family Security sponsored by the
Insurance Company of North America.
The lucky family members are Mr. and
Mrs. William H. Harrison and their son,
William Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Indovino of Mad-
ison Street, Bohemia, celebrated their
first wedding anniversary on Monday
by seeing “The Seven Wonders of the
World” and going out to dinner.
Greta Beth Sollanek, infant daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Sollanek of
Frederick Street, Bohemia, was christened
on Sunday morning at the Sayville
Congregational Church.
Playing this week at the new Sayville
Theatre: “Lil Abner,” the wildest, fast-
est musical film you ever saw, starring
Peter Palmer and Leslie Parrish; and
“The Last Angry Man,” starring Paul
Muni and David Wayne.

To promote their production of “Picnic,”
the 27th play in their colorful
history, the Sayville Musical Workshop
held a bean-guessing contest, with the
winner receiving free tickets to the
performance. With guesses ranging
from 300 to 1,050,213, Edward F. Orr,
Sayville resident and principal of William
Floyd High School, emerged the
winner with a figure of 14,749.
Saturday was the 50th wedding anniversary
for two area couples: Mr. and
Mrs. Peter J. Motti of 188 Lincoln
Avenue, Sayville, celebrated at a din-
ner party, while Mr. and Mrs. John
Gregoravic, of Oakdale, marked the
milestone with a nuptial mass in which
they renewed their vows.
Sayville High’s wrestling squad turned
back the Islip matmen 27-18 in a non-
league meet, the victory squaring the
Golden Flashes’ record at 4-4.
Members of instructor Paul Harenberg’s
Russian class in Bayport High
school will attend a performance of the
Moscow State Symphony Orchestra.
Students who intend to go are Jean
Horndrup, Elizabeth Foster, Kathy
Spellman, Arlene McKenna, Rosemary
Jost, Dod Dodson, Peter Farmer and
James McGowan.
Mrs. William Kennelly, chairperson
of the Mother’s March on Polio on Jan.
28 from 7-9 p.m., hopes that Bayport
residents will have their porch lights
on for those mothers who will collect.
A surprise “Sweet Sixteen” party was
given for Miss Lynne Le Bow of Middle
Road, Bayport, at the home of Miss
Cheryl Inskip on Lakeview Avenue on
Saturday night.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Lester
Seerveld of 51 Rollstone Avenue, West
Sayville, is brighter today because
of “Moon in Soon,” an orphan whom
the Seervelds are supporting in Korea
through World Vision, an organization
that sponsors more than 13,000
orphans in 157 orphanages in Korea,
Japan, and the Philippines.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Layden of Idle
Hour, Oakdale, attended an exhibit of
paintings by Mrs. Layden’s sister, Mrs.
Harold Solomon, at the Vera Lazuk Gallery
in Cold Spring Harbor.

Frank S. Harlow of Princess Gate, Oakdale,
celebrated his 94th birthday as the guest of
Walter Currier for luncheon  at Bronco Charlie’s.
Colored slides of Rome, the Vatican,
and Italian cathedrals were shown to
women of the Mothers’ Club of St.
John’s in Bohemia Wednesday night by
Mrs. Herbert Martin of Vanderbilt Boulevard.
Mrs. Martin gave an interesting
and well-received commentary on the
slides which she and her husband, Dr.
Martin, had taken when they made a
lengthy tour of that country in 1957.
Robert Louis Hindla, infant son of
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hindla of Church
Street, Bohemia, was baptized on Sun-
day by the Rev. W. Scott Bennett II
in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The
baby’s sponsors were Mr. and Mrs.
Edwin Haselbauer and Franklin Bernard.

Theatre: “Goliath and the Barbarians,”
starring Steve (Hercules) Reeves;
“Campbell’s Kingdom,” starring Stan-
ley Baker and Michael Craig; and “Cash
McCall,” starring James Garner and
