Joseph Anthony Brandi of Cleveland
Street will enter the State University
College at Brockport, N.Y., this fall as
a student in the college’s liberal studies
program. Mr. Brandi, a Patchogue High
School graduate, has attended Suffolk
Community College, Selden.
Nine weeks of basic Navy training has
been completed by Seaman Apprentice
Elmer A. Gagnon of Patchogue.
A cocktail party for 50 guests was
held June 15 at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Lyman Terrell of Phyllis Drive for three
teachers retiring from their profession
at the River Avenue School, Miss Mary
Dew, Mrs. George Buchheit and Mrs.
Joseph Fish. Miss Dew was presented
with a stereo Hi-Fi FM radio combination,
Miss Fish with a Westminster
chimes clock, and Mrs. Buchheit with a
set of three pieces of matched luggage.
Following the party, the guests of honor
traveled with friends to Lands End, Sayville
for a dinner, at which Dr. Thomas
Looby presented each teacher with a
resolution signed by the members of the
board of education, and principal Robert
Hildreth gave each a corsage of dollar
bills.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Rothe, Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Todd, Mr. and Mrs. James
Deedy and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Toth are
back in Patchogue after having spent
three days at the Concord Hotel at Kiamesha
Lake, N.Y. They were attending
the 62nd annual conference of the New
York State Association of Fire Chiefs.
Smiles a’ plenty accompany the pose
for the wedding picture of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Gilbert Raynor III, after their
marriage June 22 in St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church, Patchogue. The bride is the
former Miss Sheila Ann Rowse of Patchogue,
who, with her husband, will be
at home in Norwich, Conn., following a
stay in the West Indies.
Miss Jean Kropp, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Bernard Kropp of Country Club
Road, Bellport, recently graduated from
Westchester School of Nursing. Jean
plans to continue working at Grasslands
Hospital, where she took her training.
Nineteen friends helped Debbie Florio
celebrate her 8th birthday last Thursday
at a party given by her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. William Florio of General McLean
Drive.
Mr. and Mrs. William Patanjo of General
McLean Drive entertained friends and
relatives at an outdoor party June 23 in
honor of their son, Robert, who is a 1968
graduate of Bellport High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Olsen of Station
Road held an Open House Sunday afternoon
in honor of Mrs. Olsen’s mother,
Mrs. Anna L. Tests, who is 88 years old.
A number of Bellporters were invited
to Shelter Island to visit the new home
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dominy on Saturday.
Peter Otis Paige left Saturday morning
for six weeks’ military training in
connection with ROTC at Indian Town
Gap, Pa.
Gary Maggio, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert R. Maggio of Brookside Avenue,
flew to Denmark Friday night, where he
will live for six months with the Laursen
family.
Donations and gifts from various Bellport
groups will enable Miss Audrey
Chisholm, 18, daughter of Mrs. Anabel
S. Chisholm of MacDonald Avenue, to
enter college in September at the School
of Visual Arts in New York City. The
gifts included: $600 from the Martin
Luther King Scholarship Fund; $500 from
the Bellport Rotary Club; $100 from the
South Bay Art Association, and a $300
gift from an anonymous donor. Miss
Chisholm’s ambition is to become an
interior designer.
Cub Scout Pack 9 of Brookhaven went
on a fishing trip to the Suffolk County
Park. Craig Cappalli caught a flying trout
and Philip Watson caught a sunfish. Fifteen
cubs were on the trip.
Mrs. Sumner Dole of Bay Road has
returned from Princeton Seminary,
Princeton, N.J., where she attended a
Festival of the American Guild of English
Handbell Ringers.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford N. Wade of
Bergen Lane, Blue Point, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Virginia
Estella, to Edward F. Hart, son of
Mr. and Mrs. William S. Hart of Tarpon
Springs, Fla. Miss Wade is a 1965 graduate
of Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg,
Va. She has accepted a teaching
position in the Sylvan Avenue School,
Bayport, for the coming school year. Mr.
Hart is a graduate of Davis and Elkins
College, Elkins, W. Va. He is a physical
education teacher in the Sayville School
system. A November wedding is planned.
Mrs. Madeline Grosso of Mt. Vernon
Avenue, Medford, held a tea for Mrs.
Parliam and all her first grade class at
her home Tuesday. Refreshments were
served by Mesdames Grosso, Schanabel
and Sanek, class mothers.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvah L. Gilman of Terry
Road entertained 40 guests June 30 at their
home at a family barbecue in honor of their
daughter, Patrice Marie, on her June graduation
from Patchogue High School and
also on her recent engagement to Eugene
Gurney Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene
Gurney of Jamaica Avenue, Medford. Miss
Gilman and Mr. Gurney were the recipients
of many gifts.
Mrs. Robert Ryan and daughters, Randee
and Robin, and Mrs. Richard Madden, who
have been spending the winter with their
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Barney O’Neill of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., former residents of Hampton
Bays, have returned to Patchogue.
The 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and
Mrs. Dave Gerard of Elm Street, East Patchogue,
was celebrated at a smorgasbord
buffet June 22 at the Patchogue Yacht Club.
Relatives and friends from Long Island and
New Jersey enjoyed the music of J. Jacone,
accordionist and guitarist.
In Thailand, Sgt. Thomas F. Nolan III of
Patchogue is on duty at Udorn Royal Thai
AFB. A protective coating specialist, Sgt.
Nolan is a member of the Pacific Air Forces.
A recipient of the Air Force Commendation
Medal is Technical Sergeant Robert
R. Lamont of Patchogue, who is serving at
Lakenheath RAF Station, England. His decoration
was earned for meritorious service as
an air traffic controller at Udorn Thai AFB,
Thailand.
A Dean’s List student for the last two
semesters is Richard E. Dayton, son of Mr.
and Mrs. David L. Dayton of Grove Avenue,
who is enrolled at the State University
College at Oswego. Having transferred to
Oswego after graduation in 1967 from Suffolk
County Community College, Selden, he
is majoring in industrial arts.
Newly married are Mr. and Mrs. Barry N.
Siegel, who received their guests at Tojen’s
in Patchogue after the wedding ceremony in
the United Methodist Church of Patchogue,
June 9. Mrs. Siegel is the former Miss Yvette
Hunter of Patchogue. In the fall, the couple
will travel to Northwestern State College,
where Mr. Siegel will graduate in 1969.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rinaldi of Clark
Street announce the engagement of their
daughter, Celeste, to Louis Pugliese Jr., son
of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pugliese of South
Prospect Avenue. Miss Rinaldi, a 1967 graduate
of Patchogue Senior High School, attended
Suffolk Community College, Selden. She
is employed by General Motors Acceptance
Corporation in Patchogue. Mr. Pugliese is
a 1966 graduate of Patchogue High and
attends Suffolk Community College. During
the summer he is self-employed as a clam
digger.
Miss Joanne Vasso, daughter of Mrs. Jennie
Vasso and the late Albert P. Vasso of
Bellport Avenue, Bellport, graduated June
9 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts from
the State University at New Paltz. Her major
was speech. In September, Miss Vasso will
teach at the Patchogue-Medford School District.
Clifford Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford
Miller of South Country Road, returned
Monday from a two-weeks’ visit with Robert
Judd of Yorktown Heights, formerly of
Brookhaven.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Collins and family
of Bellhaven Road spent the Fourth of July
weekend camping on the North Shore with
several other families.
James E. Vaughan is spending a few days
leave after completing his basic training at
Fort Jackson, S.C. His next assignment will
be at Red Rock Armory near Birmingham,
Ala., where he will take missile training. He
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Vaughan of
North Howells Point Road.
On Sunday night, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart
Bookless and family returned to their home
on Maple Street after a six-day vacation at
their summer cottage on Lake Titicus.
Miss Beverly Wiener, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Bernard Wiener of George Court, is
a counselor at Camp Shoshana, Highland
Mills, for the summer season.
Mr. and Mrs. John Rich and family of Bay
Road, Brookhaven, have returned from a
trip to Camp Willowemoc in the Catskillls.
While there, they climbed Red Hill to the fire
tower, which is 3,000 feet above sea level.
Mrs. Janet Watts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Shene of Nelson Court, Blue Point,
is visiting with her parents for four weeks.
Mrs. Watts has with her her 19-month-old
daughter, Lisa. They will return to their
home in Los Angeles, Calif. in mid-July.
Miss Nancy J. Matsunaye, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William S. Matsunaye Jr., of
Medford, was graduated June 9 from Baldwin-
Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, with a
Bachelor of Arts degree. Her major was
English. She plans to enter graduate school
in the fall.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward B. Kellers have
returned to their home on Jayne Avenue
after having enjoyed a short stay at the
Concord Hotel at Kiamesha Lake, Monticello, N.Y.
Two local students at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, Troy, N.Y., have been
named to the Dean’s List for the spring
semester. They are Thomas Eugene Johnson
of Sharp Street and Dominick Andrisani
of Terry Road, both majoring in engineering.
Mr. Johnson will graduate in 1971,
Mr. Andrisani in 1970.
Recently married at Mt. Carmel R.C.
Church, Patchogue, are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
P. Zaffuto. A reception for 160 guests was
held at the Middle Island Country Club. The
bridegroom, who is serving with the Army,
will return to Germany after their wedding
trip to Bermuda. The bride, the former Miss
Marie Mayer of Patchogue, will remain with
her parents until his return in February.
Cake cutting time in the Norman King
family took place June 30 when Mr. and
Mrs. Norman King, lifelong residents of
Patchogue, celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary June 29 at an open house
reception, held at Wesley Hall in the United
Methodist Church of Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Drao of Falcon Avenue,
Medford, announce the engagement of
their daughter, June, to James Payne, son
of Mrs. Miriam Payne of Chestnut Avenue,
North Patchogue. Miss Drao, a graduate of
Newfield High School, Selden, is employed
at White’s in Middle Island. Mr. Payne graduated
from Patchogue High School, class of
1967 and will be attending Suffolk Community
College in the fall, majoring in retailing.
At Qui Nhon, Vietnam, Army Private 1/c
Edward J. Nowicki Jr., of Patchogue, has
been assigned to the 387th Transportation
Company. He is serving as a clerk.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mims of Taylor Avenue,
East Patchogue, drove to Fort Dix, N.J.,
Monday to pick up their son, Nathan, who
was discharged after 17 months of service
with the Army, most of it in Germany.
Miss Diane Simmons of Browns Lane,
Bellport, is vacationing in Puerto Rico for a
few days this week.
The Bellport Junior Yacht Club held a
Shipwreck Dance at the yacht club Monday
night for the junior high school group. The
Ethical Society provided the music.
Joseph Pendergast Sr., of Bell Street, will
spend the weekend at Stonington, Conn.
Mr. and Mrs. William Webster of South
Country Road have received word that
their son, William Webster III, has made the
Dean’s List for his junior year at the University
of Cincinnati in Ohio. He is spending
the summer months with his family.
Mr. and Mrs. John Pokorny and family
of South Brewster Lane vacationed for a
few days last week at Mystic, Conn., and
Sturbridge, Mass.
Mrs. Leonard Wood and daughter, Cindy,
of Station Road spent last Wednesday and
Thursday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Farnham of Norwich, Conn.
Mrs. Iver Mackay of Paris, France is visiting
for a few weeks with her son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Al Roe of South
Howells Point Road.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hotchlin of Brookhaven
were the lucky winners of a holiday
weekend for two in New York, awarded
as the top prize at the annual summer card
party given by the Rosary Altar Society
of Mary Immaculate R.C. Church, Friday
night. A capacity crowd filled the auditorium
of the church and the evening was an
enjoyable one for all. Mrs. Edward Marinelli
was in charge of the evening.
Mr. and Mrs. George Zukowski of
Brookhaven announce the engagement of
their daughter, Carol Lynne, to Charles R.
Maler Jr., of East Patchogue. Miss Zukowski
is attending Electronic Computer Programming
Institute of Suffolk. Mr. Maler is
attending the University of Miami. No date
has been set for the wedding.
A victory party for the Blue Point Dodgers,
winners of the midget baseball pennant,
was held at the home of their manager,
Robert J. Gallagher of Maple Street,
Sunday afternoon. The party was given
by their manager and assistant manager
Arthur Kottman. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mazzei,
Mrs. Arthur Kottman and Mrs. Robert
Gallagher assisted with the barbecue and
lawn games. The team this year consisted
of Nicholas Spilliotos, Ronald Lang,
Edward Travis, Kenneth Hemmendinger,
Eric Verschuure, Christopher Greiner,
Mark Gallo, Arthur Kottman and William Gallagher.
Miss Patti Cassidy, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John Cassidy of Robinson Avenue,
Medford, celebrated her 7th birthday Friday
with a party for her Tremont Avenue
School and neighborhood friends.

Sergeant Peter Howell flew from his station
at Saigon, Vietnam, for a rest and recreation
period in Honolulu, Hawaii, where
he was joined by his wife, the former Miss
Terry Henthorne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Henthorne of Cleveland Street. Mrs.
Howell has left here from Kennedy Airport
on July 12. Staying at the Waikikian Hotel,
the sergeant and his wife had seven days of
vacation before he had to fly back to Saigon.
Mrs. Howell returned home Sunday.
A toast to the bride and bridegroom at
their reception at the Better ‘Ole in Brookhaven
was given by their guests to Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Walker Fleischmann. The couple was
married June 15 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
R.C. Church, Patchogue at high noon. The
bridegroom and his bride, the former Miss
Marilynn Elaine Perry of Patchogue, are at
home in Patchogue.
At Texas bases, a Patchogue brother and
sister, Richard Raymond Skelaney and Airman
3/c Elizabeth Skelaney, are serving in
the Air Force. Airman Skelaney is at Amarillo
AFB, where his sister will be able to visit
him from Carswell AFB.
Map compiling has been the concern of
Private Carl Sponheiner of Patchogue, who
recently completed a 10-week course at the
Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Va.
Martin Barlosky, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Barlosky of Center Street, has been
named to the Dean’s List for the fourth consecutive
semester at Adelphi College, Oakdale.
A member of the 1970 graduating class,
Mr. Barlosky is majoring in psychology.
Mr. and Mrs. Patsy Mottola of River Avenue
are proud to announce the engagement
of their daughter, Elaine, to James Space,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Space of Chapel
Avenue, East Patchogue. Miss Mottola and
Mr. Space are both graduates of Patchogue
High School. Miss Mottola completed her
freshman year at Adelphi Suffolk College,
Oakdale, and will be attending Suffolk Community
College, Selden, with Mr. Space in
September.
The honor roll for the spring semester at
the University of Tampa, Tampa, Fla., lists
the name of Miss Rhoda Ann Bowden. Miss
Bowden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Charles Bowden of Evergreen Avenue, Patchogue,
is majoring in art and taking a minor
in education. She is a freshman.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Butler and family of
Academy Lane and Dr. and Mrs. Joseph
Harder and family of Rogers Avenue, both
Bellport, have returned from a week’s camping
trip to Greenfield State Park with friends
from out of town.
The Bellport Fire Department held its second
annual Family Day on the grounds of the
Washington Lodge in Brookhaven, Sunday.
Clams on the half shell, sweet corn, lots of
watermelon and other delicious foods were
served. The children were treated to pony
rides and trips on an old fire wagon. Adults
as well as children enjoyed softball and volleyball
and engaged in competitive firemen
drills. Family Day is a tribute to the wives
and children for their long hours of patient
waiting, while the “man of the house” is out
fighting the fires during the year.
Miss Linda Marie Kern of Fuoco Street
has received a stenographic diploma from
Browne’s Business School, Bay Shore. This
one-year course covered all phases of shorthand,
typing, business English, office practice
and personal improvement. Miss Kern is
a Bellport High School graduate.
Diane Penny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
George Penny of North Howells Point Road,
celebrated her 5th birthday Thursday with
an afternoon party. Her guests were Susan
Regalmuto, Karen Swan, Lisa and Jane Clifford,
Louis Decker and Diane’s sister, Laura.
Members of the Bellport Rotary Club
entertained their wives with an excursion
to Fire Island on the ferry and dinner at
the Sea Shack restaurant at Cherry Grove
Tuesday night, with Ed Bishop in charge of
the evening.
Mrs. Chalmer Frazer and daughter Hallie
of Bieselin Road are returning home this
week after a month’s visit with her mother
in Lima, Peru.
Volunteers from eight area fire departments
combined efforts to battle a roaring
blaze which swept through and destroyed
three Neighborhood Road stores in Mastic
Beach early Tuesday morning, Sirulnik’s
Hardware Store, Beach Liquor Store and
Mastic Beach Pharmacy.
