Joel D. Medvin, son of Dr. and Mrs. Sydney
A. Medvin of Monroe Avenue, has been
named to the Dean’s List for the spring
semester at the College of William and Mary,
Williamsburg, Va. Mr. Medvin will be entering
his junior year in the fall. He is majoring
in philosophy.
At Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., John
W. Valentine, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Valentine
of Jayne Avenue, has made the Dean’s
List for the 1968 spring term. A freshman, Mr.
Valentine is an economics major.
The Patchogue Recreation Department
this week announced that the New York
Naval Base Band will perform Saturday
evening at the Bandshell on Smith Street.
The band, one of the foremost of the Armed
Forces bands, appeared at the Bandshell
last season and because of the tremendous
success of the concert was asked to appear
again this year. The concert is free of charge.
The Patchogue Chamber of Commerce
has announced that Benjamin Polak of Engeleke
Street, Canaan Lake, is the winner of the
Bahamas cruise awarded by its Merchant
Division as part of the recent Patchogue
Days. Mr. Polak and his wife say they will
take their cruise aboard the Homes Lines SS
Oceanic sometime this fall.
Working at the Federal Bureau of Investigation
in Washington is Miss Judy Mirabella
of Thorburn Avenue. Miss Mirabella is a June
graduate of Patchogue High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Phelan of Chapel
Avenue, East Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Dianne Mary,
to Thomas E. Bassett, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Bassett of Taylor Avenue, East Patchogue.
Miss Phelan is a 1968 Patchogue
High School graduate and is employed by the
New York Telephone Company. Mr. Bassett
is pursuing a career in electronics. A May 10
wedding is planned.
Marine Corporal Gerard E. Gearity of Patchogue
is stationed in Okinawa with the
Third Force Service Regiment as a radio
operator.
A training encampment at Gunter AFB,
Ala., is giving cadet Vincent Lettieri of East
Patchogue field training in the Air Force
Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. He is a
member of the AFROTC unit at Michigan
Technological University.
Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Bowman and family
of Canton, who were former Bellport
residents, are spending a week in Bellport
visiting friends in the area.
Visiting last week with Mrs. Peter O’Neill
of South Country Road were her sister, Mrs
L.H. Smith of West Chester, Pa., and Mrs.
and Mrs. David Smith and son, David, of
Alexandria, Va.
Winners of prizes at the Summer Fair of
the Ruth AME Zion Church on Saturday

Mrs. William Greenhill, blanket; Mrs. Wallace

On Friday Andrew Epple, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Andrew Epple of Fuoco Avenue, had
a party in celebration of his 6th birthday.
Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Piro and
children, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Fuoco, Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Tew and children, Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Minardi, Danny Tew, brother Donald
and sister Andrea, Mrs. William Pastern and
children, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Epple of
Bay Shore.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bubb and Mr. and
Mrs. Andrew Olsen attended a performance
of “South Pacific” at Jones Beach on Sunday,
preceded by dinner in Sayville.
Home on a 15-day leave from Naval Air
Station at Lemoore, Calif., is Larry Johnson,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Johnson of
Country Club Road. He will be best man at
the wedding of his brother, Arthur, to Miss
Mary Ellen Marcarelli in Hamden, Conn., on
Aug. 24.
A meritorious promotion to sergeant in
the United States Marine Corps was recently
received by Anthony J. Moran, stationed now
at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and whose home
is at Provost Avenue, Bellport. He enlisted
June 15, 1966. Sgt. Moran is a 1964 graduate
of Seton Hall High School. For two years he
attended the Marist College at Poughkeepsie.
Laurie Kingston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John Kingston of Clearview Place, Blue
Point, celebrated her 9th birthday with a
party at her home last Monday afternoon.
Attending the party were Pamela and Chet
Bornscheuer, Cheryl O’Brian, Laurie Yablonski,
Diane and Dureen Clough, and Laurie’s
brother John and sisters Anne and Jeanmarie.
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Daane of Park Street,
Blue Point, announce the engagement of
their daughter, Susan, to Jordan Martell, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Martell of Holtsville.
Miss Daane is a graduate of James Wilson
Young High School and is employed by Jay
Plastics in Patchogue. Mr. Martell attended
Memorial High School in Levittown. He is
employed by Tony’s Sanitation, Patchogue.

The parents and fiancé of Private Anthony
Howland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin
Howland of Washington Avenue, flew to
Fort Jackson when he completed his basic
training there. Pvt. Howland recently became
engaged to Denise Vecchio of Baker Road,
Mastic Beach.
The Mother and Daughters Club of the
McDowell family held a bridal shower for
Miss Joan McDowell on Aug. 12 at the home
of Mrs. Paul Herbst on Grove Avenue.
Ronald Valenti of Edwards Street gave a
surprise going away party over the weekend
for John Campbell, an employee of Hills in
Patchogue. Ninety people attended the affair
for Mr. Campbell, who will be making his
home in California.
Mr. and Mrs. Julius Willis of West Avenue
had a welcome home party for their son,
Julius Jr., who recently returned from a twoyear
Peace Corps stay in Ethiopia. Many family
members were present at the party.
Stanley Wnukiewicz of Washington Avenue,
who is in his senior year in the department
of physics at Rochester Institute of
Technology, has been named to the Dean’s
List for the spring semester.
Happily married are Mr. and Mrs. Donald
C. Reed. The Reeds, both Patchogue residents,
were married on Saturday at the Congregational
Church of Patchogue. Mrs. Reed
is the former Miss Carol Ann Conklin. After
their wedding trip the young couple expects
to live and study in California.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Faust of Lincoln
Road announce the engagement of their
daughter, Linda, to Paul Enold, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Walter Enold of Yaphank. Miss Faust is
a June graduate of Patchogue High School
and expects to enter the Air Force next
month. Mr. Enold is a graduate of Yaphank
High School and is employed by the Bonanza
Corporation. No date has been set for the wedding.
Army Specialist 4 Harry W. Schroeder of Patchogue
received the Air Medal July 19 in Vietnam.
He earned the award for combat aerial support of
ground operations in Vietnam. Schroeder also holds the Purple Heart.
Assigned as a combat engineer in the 31st Engineer
Battalion near Camp Blackhorse, Vietnam, is
Army Private Stephen Valenti of Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric J. Carlson were married Aug. 10
in St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church, East Patchogue.
The bridegroom and his bride, the former Miss Patricia Ann Sachse
of Bellport, spent their honeymoon in Baltimore, Md.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Rabin and children, Marianne
and Steven, of North Howells Point Road, Bellport,
returned from a twoweek trip to Honolulu,
Hawaii on Aug. 12. They also made stops at San
Francisco and Las Vegas.
Jeffrey Jennison visited his mother, Mrs. Jane Gardner
of George Court, Saturday before leaving to work
with the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. Miss
Jean Gardner and Miss Nedia Barone are spending
10 days vacationing at the Gardners’ cottage on Skaneateles Lake.

weekend

Mr. and Mrs. Chester Arthur and family of Bell Street returned home
Saturday from a week’s vacation, during which they toured the Thousand
Islands, visited Expo in Canada and returned by way of the Adirondacks.

Drive took their son Kevin to the New York Mets-San
Francisco Giants baseball game at Shea Stadium
Monday night in celebration of his 11th birthday.
Mrs. Elizabeth Cirello of Bay Lane, Brookhaven,
announces the engagement of her daughter, Linda, to
William Patanjo Jr., son ofMr. and Mrs. William Patanjo
Sr., of General McLean Drive, Bellport. Miss Cirello,
a graduate of Bellport High
School, will be a senior at State University
College at Geneseo this fall. Mr. Patanjo graduated
from Bellport High School and attended
Suffolk Community College. No date has
been set for the wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Vaughn of Jamaica
Avenue and Mr. and Mrs. George Horst of
Robinson Avenue, both Medford, are spending
a few days in Syracuse, N.Y., for the New
York State Volunteer Firemen’s Convention.
Mr. Vaughn is the chief of the Medford Fire Department.
Aboard the guided missile heavy cruiser
USS Boston, Navy fireman apprentice Thomas
R. McManus of Mastic Beach is serving off
the coast of Vietnam. The Boston provides
gunfire support to the Marines and Allied Forces ashore.

John M. Felice, OFM, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Michael Felice of River Avenue, will be
ordained to the priesthood for Holy Name
Province of the Franciscan Order on Sept. 7
in Washington, D.C. Father John will offer his
first concelebrated mass in Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Church, Patchogue, at 2 p.m. Sept. 15.
A native of Patchogue, Father John graduated
from Seton Hall High School in 1959.
Mr. and Mrs. William C. Jenkins of Rider
Avenue recently returned from a month’s trip
by car to the Northwest, Canada and Alaska.
While in Fairbanks they saw the remainder of
the Centennial 1967. They also visited at the
North Pole, Portage Glacier and Mt. McKinley.
On Aug. 15 Sgt. and Mrs. Otto F. Brauner
gave a surprise birthday party in honor of the
80th birthday of Sgt. Brauner’s mother, Mary.
About 73 guests showered her with flowers and gifts.
Shar-Lin Poole, 9, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Losee of Sycamore Street, won the
poster contest sponsored by the Patchogue
Recreation Department. She was presented
with a trophy at the Patchogue Pool Tuesday.
The theme of the contest was “What America Means to You.”
Dominick Andrisani II of Terry Road has
been awarded a Chrysler Corporation Fund
Engineering scholarship for the coming academic
year at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He is a junior studying aeronautical engineering.
Miss Beth Young of Bay Avenue was one of
80 high school music students from throughout
New York State selected to attend a string
workshop at Star Lake Camp of the State
University College at Potsdam from Aug. 16 to Saturday.
A group of neighbors from Central Avenue,
Park Place and Shore Drive held their sixth
annual block party Aug. 18 on Park Place.
Each family donated food and there were
games and prizes for adults and children.
Families participating were Perry, DaConta,
Zaccaro, Felice, Zimlinghaus, Minardi, O’Reilly,
Martino, Roberto, Leone, Chiuchiolo and McCabe.
The recent marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Garbato took place in the Lutheran Church of
Our Saviour, Patchogue. The bride is the former
Miss Gail Ellen Kellermann of Patchogue.
The young couple, now living in Patchogue,
went to California on their honeymoon and
expect to continue their education at Adelphi College in the fall.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Jackson of Liberty Street
announce the engagement of their daughter,
Carol, to John Blackford McClatchey, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Reynolds McClatchey of
Atlanta, Ga. Miss Jackson is a graduate of Patchogue
High School and is presently attending
the University of Georgia. Mr. McClatchey is a
graduate student at the University of Georgia.
A June wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Cummings and children,
Mark and Laurie, of Bieselin Road, Bellport,
returned home Sunday from a week’s
vacation at Bushkill Falls in the Poconos in Pennsylvania.
Mr. and Mrs. Irving Coleman Jr., of Circuit
Road attended the Andy Williams Show at
Westbury Playhouse on Friday.
Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Williams
of South Country Road were their granddaughter,
Elisabeth Williams of Brooklyn and
Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Foote of Williamstown, Mass.
Christopher Bergskaug, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Bergskaug of General McLean Drive,
flew home Saturday from a two-months’ visit
with his uncle and aunt, Lt. Col. And Mrs. Frederick
T. Collins and family in Stuttgart.
Mr. and Mrs. William H. Strickland of
Browns Lane announce the engagement of
their daughter, Pamela, to Brian A. Hannon,
son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Hannon of Bieselin
Road. Miss Strickland, a 1966 graduate of
Bellport High School, attended Suffolk County
Community College and is presently employed
as a dental assistant in Patchogue. Mr. Hannon,
also a graduate of Patchogue High School, is a
student at New York Institute of Technology,
Westbury, where he is majoring in advertising
and design. A summer wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. James Kinsella of Library Lane,
Brookhaven, returned last week after a three
months’ trip to Scotland, Ireland and England.
In Scotland they visited Mrs. Kinsella’s parents.
Fred M. Lang Jr., left Aug. 19 for four years
service in the Coast Guard. He will take his
basic training at Camp May, N.J. His brother,
Peter, left Monday for Fort Knox, Ky., for four
to six months training in the National Guard.
They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lang of
Namkee Road, Blue Point.
William Gallagher of Maple Street, Blue
Point, celebrated his 13th birthday camping.
William, his parents, and Emil Mazzei, James
Wenk and Michael Franz spent Aug. 18, 19
and 20 camping at Southaven County Park in
Shirley. Emil also celebrated his 13th birthday
at the same time. The four boys pitched a tent
while Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher enjoyed the comforts
of their trailer. The boys went horseback
riding and rowing on the park lake.
