The new Canaan Elementary School,
located on Fry Boulevard in Canaan
Lake, built to hold 800 pupils, will open
its doors for the first time when school
opens Sept. 4. Enrollment is expected to
be approximately 600. The school has
many innovations in educational space
and flexibility in the use of this space
because of moveable walls and other features.

Gregory Newham, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Chris Newham of Phyllis Drive, left Tuesday
from LaGuardia Airport for a week
of Band Camp at Syracuse University,
where he is a student majoring in architecture
and liberal arts. The university
marching band will appear on national
television Sept. 21, when it travels to
Lansing, Mich., where Syracuse meets
Michigan State in the first game of the
Syracuse football season.
Among the 286 students receiving
advanced degrees from the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst, Mass., in June
was Jill C. O’Brien of Park Street. She
was awarded a Master of Arts degree.
Over 300 boys and girls took part in
the Patchogue Recreation Department’s
annual Aqua Show Aug. 27 at the village
municipal pool. The theme of this year’s
show was Sea the USA. Theresa and
David Dietz sat patiently under Niagara
Falls while their float toured the perimeter
of the pool. Nancy and Stephen Pontieri
rolled dice and played cards while
they sat in a Las Vegas “nightclub.” The
audience got a laugh from the “Clown
Act,” which told a version of how America
may have been discovered, with the
following boys taking part: Jim Julian,
Dan Ashline, Larry Natale, Brian Rowse,
John Pontieri and Ricky Krieger.
Waiting to greet their wedding guests
at their reception in the Knights of
Columbus Hall, Patchogue, were Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Hockney, whose marriage
took place Aug. 18 in St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church. Their wedding trip was a
week spent in Puerto Rico. Mrs. Hockney
is the former Miss Kathleen Tierney of Patchogue.
Dr. and Mrs. Sullivan A. Gallo of Patchogue
and Southampton announce the
engagement of their daughter, Ann Elizabeth,
to Albert Kevin Cryan, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Albert C.G. Cryan of Whitestone.
Miss Gallo, a graduate of Seton
Hall High School, Patchogue, is a senior
at Marymount College, Tarrytown, N.Y.
Mr. Cryan is a graduate of Holy Cross
High School, Flushing. He graduated
with honors from Fairfield University,
Conn., and is at present attending
Columbia University School of Dental
and Oral Surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. John Tully of North Howells
Point Road, Bellport, returned home
last week from a few days vacation at
Belgrade Lake, Me. Miss Elizabeth More
of Hackensack, N.J., was a weekend
guest of Mr. and Mrs. Tully.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carpenter entertained
a large group of friends at a Labor
Day breakfast at their home on Bellport Lane.
W.O. John Ince Jr. is on a 30-day
leave following a year’s tour of duty in
Vietnam. He will report to Camp Rucker,
Ala., after spending the month with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ince of
Browns Lane.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wayte of North
Brewster Lane have recently returned
from a trip to New England. Previous to
that trip, the Waytes and Mr. and Mrs.
August Waldron had spent a few days in
Saratoga attending the races.
Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Wiener
and son Miles of George Court drove to
Highland Mills, where their daughter,
Beverly, had completed the season as
a camp counselor at Camp Shoshone.
They returned home by way of Vermont,
stopping at Mt. Snow and Stratton Mountain.
Paul Warner of Bellhaven Road and
Gregory Shore of East Patchogue flew
home Monday from a trip to France,
England and Scotland.
Karl Thorndike, who has been working
on the trail crew in the White Mountains
this summer, visited for the past two
weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Alan Thorndike of South Howells Point Road.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald David and three
children of Locust Road, Brookhaven,
returned Sunday from a 10,600-mile,
six-week camping trip through Western
United States and Mexico. The high
point of the trip was one night spent in
Las Vegas, where they “camped” luxuriously in a hotel.
On Sunday, Miss Constance Stoll,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Stoll of
Arthur Avenue, Blue Point, left for Keuka
College, Keuka Park, N.Y., where she
starts her freshman year. Also this week,
the Stolls’ son, a freshman, left for the
Maritime College at Fort Schuyler.
Keith James Smalling, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward J. Smalling of Namkee
Road, celebrated his 9th birthday recently
with a cookout luncheon. A birthday
cake was served and games were enjoyed
and prizes awarded. Keith’s guests were
Keith Turley, Keith Costello, Keath Otis,
Robert Walsh, Michael Fogerty, Robert
Webster, David Noa, Mark Gallo,
Frank Schaefer, Joseph Brown, Darren
McLaughlan, and Keith’s brothers, Jay,
Terrence and Brion.

Sheri Lyn Van Ginhoven, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Neil Van Ginhoven of Grenville Avenue,
celebrated her first birthday Aug. 18 at an
outdoor seafood dinner at Water Island, Fire
Island. Twenty-five relatives and friends were in attendance.
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Coupe of Bridge
Avenue are home again after having spent a
10-day vacation in the Catskills.
A birthday celebration at which the decorations
were in the pirate theme was held
recently for Mark Anthony Silberbusch at the
home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Silberbusch
of Chestnut Avenue. Joining Mark
in honor of his 3rd birthday were his sister,
Julie, Richard Jacoby, Robbie Julian, Keith
Harrison, Karen Volkmann, Tim Volkmann,
Lori and Dougie Nemschick, Michelle and
Michael Munford, and Allison, Steven and
Stacy Sanders. Also present were Mark’s
aunt, Miss Judy Silberbusch, and the mothers of the children.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Weiner of Campbell
Street have been entertaining their son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Posovsky and
children of Garden Grove, Calif., for the past
10 days. Mrs. Posovsky is the former Miss Sandra Weiner.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Felice Jr. of Old North
Ocean Avenue recently traveled to the Great
Lakes Naval Training Center, Ill., to attend the
graduation of their son, James, from a training
course. During the eight weeks of his course,
Seaman Felice was a member of the color
guard, graduating with honors. After a 14-day
leave, he will report for duty to the aircraft carrier USS Randolph.
Newly married are Mr. and Mrs. Vincent
Victor Wysocki, whose marriage was performed
Sept. 1 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
R.C. Church, Patchogue. After returning from
a wedding trip in upstate New York, Mr. and
Mrs. Wysocki will make their home in Patchogue.
The bride is the former Miss Jeanne
Ruth Winans of Patchogue.
The Patchogue-Medford Board of Education,
in recent actions, has appointed a new
director of adult education, Allen Robinson;
has named, for the first time in the district, a
woman as assistant principal, Miss Maureen
Filippone, at the Eagle Drive School; and has
appointed a chairman of the health education
department, Mrs. Constance Sullivan.
Miss Susan Tully, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John Tully of North Howells Point Road, Bellport,
spent last week at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. George McGann of Forest Hills, where
she attended the Nationals at the West Side Tennis Club.
Mr. and Mrs. George Roeser accompanied
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Streit aboard their boat,
Wooden World II, on a cruise. They sailed
from Babylon to Cape May, N.J., up the Delaware
River and down to the Chesapeake Bay.
Mr. and Mrs. Rowland F. Smith and daughter,
Wendlyn, of Station Road have returned
home after spending several days in Minneapolis,
Minn., where they attended the wedding
of their son, Brian, to Miss Beverly Ray Donnalley.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith entertained the
bridal party following the wedding rehearsal
Aug. 30 with dinner at the Ambassador in Minneapolis.
Former Bellport residents Mr. and Mrs. W.
Edward Carter of Puerto Rico visited friends
in this area over the weekend.
Last week Mr. and Mrs. Hugh MacLeod and
family returned home to Bieselin Road after
spending the month of August at Davis Park on Fire Island.
Dean Ince will return to Williamstown,
Mass., today for his senior year at Buxton
School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Ince of Browns Lane.
A happy moment was shared by Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Brendan Vining Jr., at their wedding
reception at the Better ‘Ole, Brookhaven,
following their marriage ceremony Saturday
in Mary Immaculate R.C. Church, Bellport.
Since both Mr. Vining and his bride, the former
Miss Elizabeth Warburton of Bellport,
are attending the University of Missouri, they
will make their home in Columbia, Mo.
Holly Escallette and her horse of Fire Place
Neck Road, Brookhaven, left on Saturday for
C.W. Post College, where Holly will begin her
freshman year. Her horse will be available for
the horse shows, which are famous at C.W. Post.
Mrs. Theodore Betts, affectionately known
to her host of many friends as Betsy, was honored
on Friday by about 25 of her friends at a
celebration held at the home of Mrs. George
S. Mistler of Woodland Park Road, Bellport,
on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Co-hostesses
were Mrs. Ferde J. Mistler of Medford
and Mrs. Gustave Zeidler of Patchogue.

A baby shower was given for Mrs. Paul
Herbst of Grove Avenue Sept. 4 by Mrs. John
Janis of Lakewood Street and Mrs. Harvey
Gehrig of South Summit Avenue at Mrs. Gehrig’s
home. Thirty-five guests were present
and the decorations and general theme of
the shower were green and yellow.
Mr. and Mrs. August Paxson of Swezey
Street returned yesterday from a week’s
vacation spent at the Concord Hotel, upstate
New York. Mr. Paxson was also attending a convention of Kiwanis.
David Frail, a senior at Patchogue High
School, has been named a semifinalist in the
1968-69 Merit Scholarship Program. In the
qualifying test given in February to 17,500
nationwide, he was among the highest scorers.
Principal Frank Juzwiak, in announcing
this honor, noted that “David’s achievement
has brought honor to his family, who
deserved much credit, to his teachers and to
the Patchogue-Medford community.” David
is the son of Charles and Elizabeth Frail of Grove Avenue.
Facing a new life together, Mr. and Mrs.
Bernd Berberich posed for their wedding
picture after the ceremony Aug. 25 in St.
Joseph the Worker R.C. Church, East Patchogue.
The bridegroom is employed at
Grumman’s in Bethpage. The bride, the former
Miss Donna Maria Milano of Patchogue,
is with the New York Telephone Company.
Both are attending evening classes at Suffolk
County Community College, Selden.
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Aviano of River Avenue
are happy to announce the engagement
of their daughter, Marie Jean, to Thomas F.
Greblewski, son of Mrs. Eleanore Greblewski
of Elmira, N.Y. Miss Aviano is a 1965
graduate of Seton Hall High School and is
at present employed at Suffolk Psychiatric
Hospital, Central Islip. Mr. Greblewski is a
graduate of Corning Community College,
Corning, N.Y. and attended St. John Fisher
College, Rochester, N.Y. He recently completed
three years of active service with the
U.S. Army. A November wedding is planned.
At Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis,
Va., Army Private Edwin F. Blum of
Patchogue has completed a helicopter repair
course. During his 13 weeks of training,
skills were taught him for the repair of both
cargo and troop-carrying helicopters.
Receiving basic training at Fort Gordon,
Ga., is Private Leroy Mott Jr., of North Patchogue.
He is serving with B Company, Third
Battalion, First Training Brigade.
Miss Jan Harting of Circuit Road, Bellport,
recently returned from a several weeks’
vacation trip to California, where she visited
her brother-in-law and sister, Capt. and Mrs.
Dewy J. Barich of Fairfield. While there, she
toured a candle-making factory, a winery,
the Redwood, and saw the typical San Francisco sights.
Miss Betsy Rand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alonzo Rand of Munsell Road, left last week
for her sophomore year at Green Mountain
College, Poultney, Vt. Her sister, Miss Alison
Rand, has returned to the University of
Miami, Fla., for her senior year.

A surprise birthday party with 40 guests

Edward Scavelli, and her son, Peter Grucci Jr.

following the summer vacation are Michael
Florio and Peter Clement, both in their sophomore year.

couple traveled to St. Louis, Mo., where the
bridegroom is an actor with the Loretto-Hilton Repertory Company.
Mrs. Joseph Yablonski of Davis Avenue,
Blue Point, was the hostess at a surprise
birthday party given for her husband Saturday
evening. Among the guests were Mr.
and Mrs. Donald Zimmer and their son, Mr.
and Mrs. Patrick J. Sullivan and Miss Shirley
Wedegis of Blue Point, and houseguest Miss
T.L. Lipshitz of New York City.
Robert Mince, son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Mince of Middle Road, left Monday to begin
a course of study at the Church of Man Seminary
in San Francisco, Calif. Laura Mince
has completed a course of study at the Glen
Cove School of Nursing. After spending a
few weeks vacationing at home, Laura will
be employed at the St. Johns Hospital in Smithtown.

Main Street of the Patchogue business
community suffered a notable loss during
the first week of September, when the Bee
Hive department store closed its doors to
business. The Bee Hive of Patchogue Inc.
filed a bankruptcy petition Aug. 30. Efforts
to gather information concerning the well known
store’s demise met with failure this
week. Bernard Siegfried, president of the
firm, was not available for comment.
Entering the first class of the junior college
of Penn Hall Junior College and Preparatory
School, Chambersburg, Pa., is Miss
Barbara E. Avery, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Humphrey Avery of South Country Road.
Jeffrey Peter Glass, son of Dr. and Mrs.
Sidney Glass of Church Street, has entered
the New York Medical College in New York
City. Mr. Glass graduated in June with
honors from the American University in
Washington, D.C., and plans to follow his
graduation from the medical college with
specialized studies in pediatric surgery.
A fire Sept. 14 completely destroyed
one of four buildings of the Wiremaid
products Corporation at 60 West Avenue.
The company’s owner, Arnold Boden, said
the building was a total loss and estimated
the damage at $150,000. Patchogue Fire
Department chief Frank Hutton said the
fire started at the loading ramp at the
northwest side of the affected building. He
said the fire was prevented from spreading
to the three other buildings by the “fine efforts of the firemen.”

Paul Evrley after their marriage ceremony
in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church,
Patchogue. The bride is the former Miss
Barbara Ann Horton of Patchogue. Their
reception was held at New Towne Line in Blue Point.
Miss Georgia Ann Wojciechowski,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Wojciechowski
of Vernon Street, graduated Sept. 6
from the Kings Park State Hospital School
of Nursing. She has accepted a position
as staff nurse at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kentoffio Sr., of Log
Road proudly announce the engagement
of their daughter, Mary Ann, to Specialist
4 James Donohue, son of Mrs. Nadine
Donohue of Beach Avenue. Miss Kentoffio
and Spec. Donohue are both graduates of
Patchogue High School. Miss Kentoffio is
employed by District Court in Riverhead.
Spec. Donohue graduated from transportation
school at Fort Eustis, Va., and will
shortly be serving a tour of duty in Vietnam.
No date has been planned for the wedding.
Paul Young of Maure Avenue, East Patchogue,
will spend two weeks aboard USS
HANK DD 702, which will visit the ports of
Philadelphia and San Juan. Mr. Young is a
member of the naval reserve at Riverhead
and this cruise is part of his annual reserve
training. The Navy maintains a training
facility at Riverhead to help start young
men on naval careers as well as keep former
members of the regular Navy up to date.
Visiting for the weekend with Mr. and
Mrs. Maxwell Small of Otis Lane, Bellport,
was their son, Christopher Small of Ripon
College, Wis., who is in the East on a business trip.
Christopher Gould, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Gould, has received his discharge
from the U.S. Air Force following three
years of duty. He is enrolled at the University
of Omaha in Nebraska for his senior year.
Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Budny of Livingston
Road spent the weekend at the farm
near Roxbury owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ed
Martin of Shore Road. The Budnys have
recently purchased an old gristmill in this
same area, which they intend to restore for a weekend retreat.
On Sunday, David Jonathan Coon, infant
son of Mr. and Mrs. John Coon of Country
Club Road, was christened at the Emanuel
Lutheran Church in Patchogue. The
godparents were Miss Gayle Schaefer and
chief warrant officer John Ince Jr. Mr. and
Mrs. Coon entertained at a barbecue for
friends and relatives at their home following the ceremony.
Several enterprising young girls and boys
took advantage of the lovely September
weather and held a fair on the Doherty
lawn on South Country Road Saturday
afternoon. Nearly 30 friends came to enjoy
the fun and games. Virginia Doherty was
the fortune teller, Mindy Munson ran the
Easy Money game, Craig Collins took
charge of the Ball the Tire game, Jo-Ann
Maggio and Kyle Collins ran the Fishing
Well and Cathy Collins was in charge of
refreshments. Coins thrown in a wishing
well — a bucket of water — were donated
to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. They amounted to $2.15.
Miss Linda Shene, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Howard B. Shene of Blue Point, recently
became engaged to John Johannesen,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johannesen of
Center Moriches. A graduate of Central
Islip State Hospital School of Nursing, Miss
Shene will be on the staff of the New York
Hospital in New York City.
Miss Louise Pasternack, a senior at
James Wilson Young High School, Bayport,
has been named a semifinalist in the
National Merit Scholarship competition.
She is one of 15,000 semifinalists throughout
the country. Louise is the daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Simon Pasternack of Namkee
Road, Blue Point and would like to attend
either Swarthmore College or Radcliffe.
She plans to major in chemistry or possibly physics.
