among 150 who celebrated their golden
wedding anniversaries at a special
ceremony conducted by Bishop Walter
P. Kellenberg at St. Agnes Cathedral,
Rockville Centre, Sunday. The bishop
presented each couple with a scroll
commemorating their 50 years of marriage
and then led them in a renewal of
their marriage vows. They are: Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Vitale of Bellport; Mr. and
Mrs. Michael Calise of Mastic Beach;
Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas S. Sala of Medford;
Mr. and Mrs. Louis W. Fox Sr.
and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Noto of Port Jefferson.
Miss Jean Ann Wagner, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wagner of Walnut
Avenue, a member of the flute quartet
at Ithaca College, appeared in a student
recital there recently. She played
the “Andante and Allegro” by Haydn.
Miss Wagner, a 1968 graduate of Patchogue
High School, is a freshman in
the School of Music at the college.
Dennis Puleston presented a program
on “Birds of Brookhaven” in the
Knights of Columbus Hall April 23 at
a meeting of the Woman’s Club of Patchogue.
Mrs. Carol Russo, club president,
greeted the many members and
guests present.
The first of several hundred steel
girders was set in place at the Buffalo
Avenue secondary School in Medford
early last week. Building construction
was approved by Patchogue-Medford
voters in December 1967 to alleviate
pupil overcrowding at Patchogue High
School. The building is due for student
occupancy in the fall of 1970.
“Cinderella,” an operetta, was presented
at the River Avenue School last
Thursday. Students participating in the
performance were David Fiorentino,
Violet Balsamo, Pat Anzalone, Ronnie
Bleecher, Eva Chiuchiolo, Shirley
Mueller, Elliot Frank, Maureen Barthelmess,
John Sauli and Rick Collins.
Mrs. Anna Colella of Norton Street,
Patchogue, announces the engagement
of her daughter, Linda N. Colella, to
William R. Hurry, son of Mr. and Mrs.
R.F. Hurry of Country Club Road, Bellport.
Miss Colella, a 1968 graduate of
Patchogue High School, is a nurse’s
aide at St. Charles Hospital, Port Jefferson.
Mr. Hurry graduated from Bellport
High School in 1967. He is in his sophomore
year at Suffolk County Community
College. He will enter his junior year
at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Back in their Patchogue Shores
home, East Patchogue, after a two-year
absence are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tract,
who have been making their home in California.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gomes of Munsell
Road have returned from their
vacation in Switzerland. They also
toured Holland, France and Zurich, and
spent four days on the Rhine River by boat.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tuzza of Woodacres
Road had a family dinner Thursday
in honor of Mr. Tuzza’s birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. John Ince of Browns
Lane, Bellport, and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace
Budny of Derwood, Md., formerly
of Bellport, flew home last week from
a vacation at St. John in the Virgin
Islands. Mr. and Mrs. John Lancaster
of Gerard Street, who accompanied the
other two couples to St. John, spent
a week in St. Croix before returning home.
Marna Kerins received her First Holy
Communion at Mary Immaculate R.C.
Church Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Martin
Kerins took the family out for dinner at
Felice’s following the service.
Private 1/c James Vaughan is spending
a week’s leave with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. James Vaughan of North Howells
Point Road. He will leave tomorrow
for Fort Lewis, Wash., for assignment
in Vietnam.
Mr. and Mrs. Travis Rauch of South
Howells Point Road attended the Knitting
Arts Exhibition at Atlantic City, N.J.
Mrs. Janet Scotto of Highland Avenue,
Blue Point, who is moving to Florida
today, was given a surprise walk-in
farewell party by some 10 of her neighbors
and friends last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hambley of
Brook Avenue received a telephone call
from their son, Sp. 4 Richard Hambley,
who was on a six-day R&R in Australia,
from his duties in Vietnam.
Assignment to Keesler AFB, Miss., has
been given Airman Arthur F. Pedatella
of Medford, following his completion of
basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas.
Saved when his car crashed through
the Park Dodge lot at 575 East Main
Street, Patchogue, and went flying
through the air into a lake on the north
side of the lot was Leo Linet, 78, of
Durkee Lane, East Patchogue. Two
quick-thinking mechanics from Park
Dodge went to the driver’s rescue and
likely saved his life. They are Gerry
Cary, 30, of Bonny Drive, and James
Wells, 30, of Shinnecock Avenue, both Mastic.

The Classics IV, a nationally known
rock group, will perform in the Patchogue
High School gymnasium on May
17, presented by the Patchogue High
School Key Club. The concert will also
feature two other well-known groups,
The Tokens and The January Thaw. The
Classics IV have very recently reached
the top of the charts with their recordings
of “Stormy,” “Spooky,” “Traces”
and “Every Day With You.” Tickets are
$3 and can be obtained from Key Club
members or at the following locations
in Patchogue: Patchogue Music Center,
George’s TV and The Pacesetter.
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip L. Borzi of Case
Avenue entertained about 50 of their
relatives and closest friends Saturday
in their home in celebration of their
25th wedding anniversary. They are the
parents of four children, Phyllis, who
attends graduate school at Syracuse
University; Pamela, a freshman at the
College of St. Rose in Albany, and twin
sons, Phillip and Patrick, attending St.
Francis de Sales School.
Warren A. Maggio, son of Mrs. Estelle
Maggio of Maple Avenue, has been
appointed manager of the San Francisco
office of the Armstrong Contracting and
Supply Corporation.
Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Ryder Coleman
of Patchogue have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Clare
Ellen, to Daniel Charles Sterbens, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Sterbens of
Medford. Miss Coleman, a graduate of
Patchogue High School and Browne’s
Business School, is employed by the
New York Telephone Company. Mr.
Sterbens graduated from automotive
school in Brooklyn. He works for Anvil
Door and Hardware. A September wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Rocco Jacovellis of Munsell
Road, East Patchogue, celebrated
the joyous occasion of their 58th wedding
anniversary with a dinner party at
their home April 30. The happy couple
was honored with telegrams from President
Nixon and Sen. Javits.
Awards came to two students recently
at St. Joseph the Worker School in East
Patchogue. Linda Spillet won the Junior
Twirling Championship at the Bethpage
High School. Aileen Reilly won a music
medal for her excellent performance in
the state School of Music, where her rating was “A.”
Mrs. John Herrera of Baycrest Avenue,
Bellport, attended the 25th reunion
of her class at Columbia College, Columbia, S.C.
Lt. Col. (Ret.) Howard M. Harting
of Circuit Road attended the reunion
of the P-47 Fighter Pilots Association
held at the Wings Club of the Biltmore
Hotel in New York from Friday through Sunday.
Debbie Florio, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. William Florio of General McLean
Drive, received First Communion at
Mary Immaculate R.C. Church Saturday
morning. A family party was held Sunday
in celebration of the occasion.

their 59th wedding anniversary and Mrs.

Mr. and Mrs. George Schordine of Central
Avenue, Patchogue, won two days at the
Concord Hotel, Monticello, N.Y. The award,
given by the Sisterhood of Temple Beth El,
Patchogue, was made in connection with a
dinner and fashion show held recently.
John F. Kienzle, son of Mrs. Florence
Kienzle of Chestnut Avenue, will be commencing
his doctoral studies at Princeton
University in the fall. Mr. Kienzle has been
named a Princeton University Regional Studies
Fellow and as such has been awarded
a full scholarship to finance his studies.
He will be specializing in Ottoman Turkish
history in Princeton’s Department of Near
Eastern Studies. He is looking forward to a
career in college teaching.
Happiness was shared by Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Pugliese after their wedding ceremony
Saturday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C.
Church, Patchogue. The bride is employed at
Brookhaven National Laboratory. The bridegroom
is with Allegheny Airlines. After their
wedding trip to the Poconos, Mr. Pugliese
and his bride, the former Miss Elsie Hnatik
of Sayville, will live in Patchogue.
The North Patchogue Fire Department
Bowling Team won the trophy on the third
and final leg in the Brookhaven Town Volunteer
Firemen’s League at Maggio’s Patchogue

An added surprise helped Miss Kerri Liguori’s
third birthday party to be a success. Her
father, Thomas Liguori of Yaphank Road, a
Fifth Precinct detective, was in Nashville,
Tenn., on business, and arrived unexpectedly
early with presents to complete the May
1 party. The 12 guests were also joined by
Kerri’s mother, her brother, Ronald, and her
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Liguori
Sr., of Patchogue.
Special pins have been awarded to the
three Brownies of Troop 1383, East Patchogue,
for selling the most Girl Scout cookies.
Receiving them were Miss Elizabeth
Cotto, Miss Carol Gomes and Miss Christine Temple.
Ronald and Ricky Neuman, identical twin
sons of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Neuman of
Munsell Road, are the new route boys for the
Patchogue Advance in the local area.
George H. Carleton, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard H. Carleton of Browns Lane, Bellport,
was named to the Dean’s List at Pratt
Institute, Brooklyn. He will graduate this
June with a major in architecture.
The ballroom dance students of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward der Mateosian of Academy
Lane completed their course with a dance
party Friday night at the Bellport Community
Hall. The children enjoyed novelty
dancing and refreshments. Their parents,
who were guests for the evening, also participated in the dancing.
Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Fleming of Academy
Lane arrived at the Bellport dock Saturday
aboard the new Marblehead 35-foot
cruiser they bought from Amityville.

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Swezey of Park Avenue,
Blue Point, hung out a Welcome Home
sign for their son, Private Alfred Swezey, last
Saturday. After a 16-day leave, he will report
to Fort Dix for reassignment to an 18-month
tour of duty in Germany.

brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Richard
A. Rose and their family of Park Avenue last week.

Miss Rosemarie Schiatta, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Schiatta of Nottingham
Avenue, received her First Holy
Communion Sunday at St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church, Patchogue. A small family
gathering was held later at her home, at
which one of the guests was her aunt, Miss
Marie Plantz of Brooklyn.
It was a new FM radio, tuned in for
the listening pleasure of Mrs. Anne Miller
of Rider Avenue, who was visiting Miss
Bertha Carlson Friday in Pleasantville,
upstate New York. The surprising result
was an instant and very definite reminder
of home, when, clear as a bell, came
in over the airwaves, “Swezey & Newins
Department Store … in Patchogue.” The
message was being sent by WALK, the
clearest of all the stations, according to Miss Carlson.
Miss Linda Marie McKenna, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McKenna of Schoenfeld
Boulevard, Patchogue, has accepted
a fourth-grade teaching position for September
in the William Mount Elementary
School, Setauket, following her graduation
with a B.A. degree May 31 from State University
College, Oneonta, N.Y. A graduate
of Patchogue High School, Miss McKenna
majored in the elementary education program.
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Budd of Moriches
Avenue, East Moriches, announce the
engagement of their granddaughter, Phyllis
Nathan, to Specialist 4 Richard Gearity
of the Army, son of police lieutenant and
Mrs. Gerard Gearity of Avery Avenue,
Patchogue. Miss Nathan is employed by
the Town of Brookhaven in Patchogue. Sp.
Gearity is serving at Chou Chieu, Vietnam.
A December wedding is planned.
Hagerman Fire Department responded
to a kitchen fire at the home of Louis
Pirozzi of Munsell Road, East Patchogue.
Although the damage was extensive, fortunately no one was injured.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Skippon exchanged
nuptial vows Saturday in Mary Immaculate
R.C. Church, Bellport. After touring Florida
and the southern states, they will make
their home in Patchogue. The bride, the
former Miss Leween Dolores Stewart of
Bellport, is employed in Grant City, East
Patchogue. The bridegroom is an electronics technician at Grumman’s.
Michael Mullaney, the 21-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Mullaney of South
Howells Point Road, Bellport, and a senior
biology major at the College of Steubenville,
Steubenville, Ohio, has recently been
elected president of the student government at the college.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Roe of South
Howells Point Road recently visited
Shreveport, La., where they were guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Grantham Couch. Mr. Roe and
Mr. Couch competed in the annual Cotton
Pickers Classic golf tournament held at
Shreveport Country Club and placed sixth out of 100 teams.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Meagher of Circuit
Road flew to Rochester Saturday to visit
friends. They returned home Sunday.
David H. Lanman III of Hulse Street has
returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam.
He arrived home Friday after receiving
his discharge from Fort Dix, N.J. George
Lanman, a student at Northeastern University,
Boston, and Jonathan Lanman,
who attends Berkshire School in Massachusetts,
came home for the weekend to
welcome their brother.
Michael Verni, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Verni of Seeley Street, Brookhaven,
received the Sacrament of Confirmation
May 12 at Mary Immaculate R.C. Church, Bellport.
Miss Joann Mazarakis, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Victor Mazarakis of Sipp Avenue,
Medford, will graduate from the Mandl
School for Medical and Dental Assistants
on May 26. Presently employed at
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital as a laboratory
technician, Miss Mazarakis will
attend the Central Islip School of Nursing in September.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Harry Gray of
Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, announce
the engagement of their daughter, Nancy
Rogerson Gray, to Jon Fredrick Spirson
of Bayport. Both Miss Gray and Sgt. Spirson
attended James Wilson Young High
School, Bayport. Miss Gray is now in her
third year at Syracuse University as an
English major. Sgt. Spirson is stationed at
the U.S. Marine Corps base at Quantico,
Va. Having served twice in Vietnam, he is
awaiting his discharge soon from a fouryear
tour of duty. A summer wedding is planned.

Teacher Recognition Day was observed
throughout the Patchogue-Medford District on
May 20. At the Bay Avenue School, a special
tea was served by officers of the Parent-Teacher
Association, including: Lorraine Chumas,
homeroom chairman; Mrs. Mary Roberts,
president-elect; Mrs. Mary Kate Adams, vice
president; Mrs. Barbara Chester, PTA Council
representative, and Mrs. Marie Grahn, program chairman.
Miss Margery A. Libin, daughter of Dr. and
Mrs. Joseph S. Libin of Roe Boulevard east,
on Sunday received her Bachelor of Science
degree in elementary education at Skidmore
College commencement exercises at the Saratoga
Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs.
A Bachelor of Arts degree in English was
conferred on Miss Karleen A. Erhardt, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Erhardt Jr., of Clark
Street, at the graduation exercises Sunday at Skidmore College.
At Grant City, East Patchogue, between the
King Kullen store and Grant’s, the Daughters
of Israel Jacob Aid Society will hold a cake
sale from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 5, with Mrs.
Minnie Diamond as chairman.
The wedding ceremony of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Van Tassel took place on May 11 at
Emanuel Lutheran Church, Patchogue. Mr.
Van Tassel and his bride, the former Miss
Elizabeth Ann Harding of Patchogue, are making
their home in Patchogue. Their two-week
wedding trip covered Niagara Falls and the
New England states as well as the Thousand Islands and Canada.
A Palm Sunday wedding was that of Mr.
and Mrs. Theodore Cicci, which took place
in Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church,
Patchogue, that day. Both Mr. Cicci and his
bride, the former Miss Susan Slovensky of Patchogue,
are employed by the Suffolk County Police Department.
Members of the Tinker National Bank Bowling
team that captured first place in the Ladies
Tuesday Night League at Maggio’s Patchogue
Recreation Alleys include: Marge Nemschick
of Medford, Connie Ferrante of East Patchogue,
Dot Birmingham of East Patchogue,
Jeanne Shaber of Patchogue and Judy Pizzo
of Bellport. They were each presented with a
trophy, which they proudly displayed.
Elizabeth Rand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alonzo C. Rand of Munsell Road, East Patchogue,
was awarded an Associate in Arts
degree in science at the 132nd commencement
exercises at Green Mountain College, Poultney, Vt., May 18.
Mrs. Sylvia Heyman, a member of the Bellport
Women’s Golf Club, shot a hole-in-one
on the fourth hole May 23 while playing with
her husband, Leonard. Not only did she experience
one of the greatest thrills of her life, but
it makes her eligible for a chance to win the
National Hole-in-One Sweepstakes. The prize
is two tickets to Scotland plus $1,000 in cash.
Al Turk, radio announcer for WALK, shot an
89, his all-time low, on May 23. He was playing
with the Bellport golf pro, Don Stephani, Al
Plastino and Dr. Sullivan Gallo.
Bellport Girl Scout Junior Troop 1281, under
the leadership of Miss Marilyn Vettel and Mrs.
Robert Schuman, enjoyed a Long Island Rail
Road tour of New York Saturday, leaving from
the Bellport station. They ate lunch in the Calico
Kitchen, visited NBC, the Wax Museum,
Rockefeller Plaza and St. Patrick’s Church.
A sweet sixteen party was given for Miss
Deborah Thomas in the Fountain Room of
Patchogue Lanes May 18 by her mother, Mrs.
Robert B. Hooper Jr., of Head of the Neck
Road. Nearly 40 guests attended the semiformal
dance. Music was furnished by the Supreme Magistrates.
Alan Sparrow has returned home for the
summer after completing his freshman year at
Brown University, Providence, R.I.
Robert Menrisky of Locust Road, Brookhaven,
has just returned from a three-month
business trip in Oxnard, Calif., for Grumman Aircraft Corporation.
Mrs. Alan Baker of Beaver Dam Road spent
a few days last week visiting Mrs. Joseph Parsons
of New York City, formerly of Bellport.
Miss Joann Mazarakis, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Victor Mazarakis of Sipp Avenue, Medford,
graduated from the Mandl School for
Medical and Dental Assistants on Monday.
Presently employed at Brookhaven Memorial
Hospital as a laboratory technician, Miss
Mazarakis will attend the Central Islip School
of Nursing in September.
Timothy Masem, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Masem of East Masem Square, received confirmation
Sunday. A buffet followed. Guests from
the Medford area included Mr. and Mrs. Anton
Masem of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Mr. and Mrs.
John Masem and family of Robinson Avenue.
