For the first time since 1932, the Patchogue
Fire Department’s motorized Van
Guard Hose Company won the overall point
trophy at the South Shore Volunteer Firemen’s
Association competition, which was
held last weekend in Lindenhurst. Members
of the team, all residents of Patchogue, are:
Jake Parris, Bill Rowse, Al Palermo, George
Minet, Robert Smith, Gary Parris, David
Antonio, Fred Matern, Norman Novick, Ken
Meyer, Robin Parris, Mark DeVito, James
DeVito Jr. and Robert Gilman.
Miss Susan Kulakowski, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Michael Kulakowski of Swan Lake
Drive, graduated June 13 from Flushing
Hospital and Medical Center School of
Nursing. She will hold a position at St.
Charles Hospital, Port Jefferson, in July.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Maile of Roe Avenue,
East Patchogue, announce the engagement
of their daughter, Stephanie, to Edward
Bryson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H.
Bryson of Liberty Street, Patchogue. Both
Miss Maile and Mr. Bryson graduated from
Patchogue High School. Miss Maile is in
the employ of the National Security Bank.
Mr. Bryson is attending Adelphi College in Garden City.
Dean McChesney, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harvey McChesney Jr., of Bellport Lane,
Bellport, has been inducted into the U.S.
Army and left this week for his basic training.
Miss Wendy Demarest and Miss Sally
Bohn will fly home from Washington, D.C.
today after vacationing for five days with
Sally’s sister, Miss Karen Bohn, who is
employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
A surprise bridal shower was given for
Miss Mary Hanson of Bellport by the Misses
Debbie and Karen Hermus, Martine Satterley
and Barbara Porter Saturday afternoon.
About 30 guests were present at the shower,
which was held on the back lawn of the
Hermus home on North Brewster Lane.
Miss Hanson will be married to Nicholas
Satterley at Mary Immaculate R.C. Church Aug. 16.
Happy couple are Mr. and Mrs. Peter Otis
Paige, whose marriage took place June 14
in All Saints Church, Peterborough, N.H.
Mr. Paige, whose parents live in Bellport,
and his bride, the former Miss Lucille Oliver
Bonnar of Peterborough, N.H., went to
Nassau, the Bahamas for their wedding trip.
They will make their home in Peterborough.
A second promotion since January has
been given Army Specialist 5 Robert H.
Collins of Bellport, to his present rank, at
Wildflecken, Germany. He is serving with
the Third Infantry Division.
A very special patient was Mrs. Robert
Pedersen of Johns Neck Road, Shirley, who
became the mother of twins on June 25 at
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Pedersen
was admitted at 6:10 p.m. that date
as the 120,000th patient to be cared for in
the hospital since its opening in 1956. Mrs.
Pedersen and her husband have four other
children, aged 1 to 4. The twins have been
named Jodi Lynn and James Arne.

Miss Penny Ann Pink of Barton Avenue, a
1969 graduate of Patchogue High School, has
been accepted for training in September at
the Brooklyn State Hospital of Nursing.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sobel of Potter Street
are the grandparents of Jill Sophianna, born
June 22 at Hunt Memorial Hospital, Danvers,
Mass., to their son and daughter-in-law, Mr.
and Mrs. Lyle James Sobel of Danvers. A
brother and sister were waiting at home to
greet Jill Sophianna.
Frederick Allan Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frederick B. Jones of River Avenue, will enter
the September freshman class at Clarkson
College of Technology at Potsdam, N.Y. He
plans to enroll in the School of Engineering.
Herman Pearlmutter of Ketcham Avenue is
one of 60 high school science teachers from
across the United States currently attending
a summer institute in the earth sciences at
Millersville State College, Millersville, Pa.
Named to the Dean’s List at State University
College at New Paltz, N.Y. is Russell
Steyert, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Steyert of
Oak Street, on his having attained a B average
during the recently completed semester at the college.
A Spanish wedding was the start of their
new life for Senor and Senorita Ramon Camacho,
who were married Saturday in St. Francis
de Sales R.C. Church, Patchogue. The ceremony
and outdoor reception at the home of
the bride, the former Senorita Doris Santana
of Patchogue, held to all the traditions of old
Spain. The couple is spending three weeks in Puerto Rico.
The silver wings of an Army aviator have
been given Keith W. Brown of Bellport at his
graduation from aviation school at Hunter
Army Airfield, Savannah, Ga. At this time he
was appointed a warrant officer.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gordon of Academy
Lane and Mr. and Mrs. Victor DePinto of East
Patchogue recently returned from a “Cruise
to Nowhere” on the Amerikanis.
Danik and Kristin Wold, daughters of Mr.
and Mrs. Christian Wold of General McLean
Drive, are spending two weeks in Decatur,
Ill., visiting their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Gilbert Weber.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Werner and family of
General McLean Drive visited Mr. and Mrs.
William Seidler of Ellenville for the holiday weekend.
A surprise bridal shower was given for
Miss Pamela Strickland last Thursday night
by Miss Michelle Dono, held at the home of
Miss Strickland’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William
Strickland of Browns Lane. She will be
married to Brian Hannon, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Hannon of Bieselin Road, on July 19.
Mr. and Mrs. John Wallen of South Howells
Point Road entertained a group of out-oftown
friends at a barbecue on their lawn on
the Fourth of July.
Harvey McChesney III arrived home Tuesday
night from Scofield Barrack in Hawaii.
He will be married to Miss Day McDougall Saturday.
Miss Kim Collins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Eugene Collins, flew to Europe on Sunday
with her grandmother, Mrs. Robert Pardee
of Kingston, for a three weeks’ vacation in
Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
Robert Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alton
Johnson of Bieselin Road, celebrated his 6th
birthday with a party on the Fourth of July.
His guests were Tommy Noegren, Tommy
Marinelli, Jimmy DeZego, Tommy DeZego,
Philip Remsburg, Frank Aragona, David Ell,
Peter Maust, and his brother, David.
Monica Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Miller of Burnett Lane, Brookhaven,
celebrated her 7th birthday with a party for
the following Brookhaven friends: Mary Liz
David, Karin Briggs, Jackie Ozzimo, Katy Lester,
Pam Schairer and Leane Norton.
The Junior Snack Bar on the Montauk Highway
in Brookhaven was broken into recently
and about $311 worth of items, including $100
in cash from a cigarette machine, were stolen.
Mr. and Mrs. John Bianco and family of
Corey Avenue, Blue Point, have returned
from a week’s stay at a dude ranch near New Paltz, N.Y.
Jimmy Rose, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard
A. Rose of Park Avenue, was the weekend
guest of Mr. Charles Spencer and Bob Spencer
at Salisbury, Va.
Eugene McKenna has returned from a
weekend camping trip to Montreal, Canada,
where he visited Expo ’67.
Seaman Apprentice Robert R. Schmidt of
Blue Point was graduated from Storekeeper
School at the Naval Supply Schools at Newport,
R.I., after completing a 10-week course.

Contracts are ready to be signed for
Patchogue’s new $750,000 firehouse on Jennings
Avenue to replace the old 1904 model on Lake Street.
An open house Saturday afternoon at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Jamieson
of Rider Avenue, fragrant with the floral
gifts of many well-wishers, was in celebration
of their 50th wedding anniversary.
A surprise bridal shower was held recently
for Miss Caroline Scutari, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Roscoe Scutari of Bay Avenue,
at her home. It was given by her future
mother-in-law, Mrs. Ursula Monaco of Patchogue.
Thomas Ralph Liebermann, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Liebermann of Jayne Avenue,
graduated in June with a Bachelor
of Science degree in foreign service from
Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
He was awarded a graduate fellowship to
attend the University of Pittsburgh, Pa., to
major in business management.
Second Lieutenant Frederick I. Magner,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Magner of Highland
Avenue, a 1965 graduate of Patchogue
High School, on June 6 received a Bachelor
of Science degree from Pratt Institute
in Brooklyn. Lt. Magner left Monday for
assignment to Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Having served aboard the nuclear powered
submarine USS Kate, which has
completed operations in the Arctic Ocean
beneath the polar ice cap, machinist mate
1/c Eric H. Pelish of Patchogue has returned
to home base at New London, Conn.
The third birthday of Steven Lamberti,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lamberti of Private
Road, East Patchogue, was celebrated
July 3 at a family barbecue held at the home
of his grandmother, Mrs. Charles Lindquist
of Myrtle Lane. About 25 people attended the festivities.
A double-ring ceremony united in marriage
June 7 in St. Joseph the Worker R.C.
Church, East Patchogue, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
L. Perino, who spent their honeymoon
in the Poconos before taking up residence
in Brookhaven. The bride is the former Miss
Jane Deems of Bellport. The bridegroom is
employed by his father at the Village Meat market.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Cowan of Bellport
have returned from a 10-day cruise to
Nantucket on their 30-foot boat, Skimmer.
They went out in 2½ days and made a
leisurely trip back, stopping at Cuttyhunk,
Block Island, Sag Harbor and the Shinnecock Canal.
Miss Susan Irving and Miss Susan Demarest
spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
of last week attending orientation sessions
at the State University College at
Buffalo, where they are enrolled for the fall semester.
Mr. and Mrs. Hans Henke of North Prospect
Avenue, Blue Point, gave a party in
celebration of the christening of their infant
daughter, Susan Marie, Sunday. Among the
40 guests were Susan’s aunt and godmother,
Mrs. Robert Stitt of Eatondale Avenue,
and her uncle and godfather, James Morge
of Patchogue, her grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Adolph Morge, and her great-aunt,
Mrs. John Gavigan of Garden City.
Mr. and Mrs. James Striffler of Kuebler
Street gave a barbecue and pool party
Sunday for the Mets Midget Baseball team
and, last night, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hambley
of Brook Avenue gave one for the Pirates
Midget Baseball team at their home.
Gretchen Marquardt, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Eugene Marquardt of Ocean Avenue,
celebrated her 7th birthday July 10 with a
party for her friends, Maureen Morley, Lynn
Rossiter, Jeannie Grawer, Gwen Barthelme,
Annmarie Prudenti and Lori Dillon.
Patches, an English cocker spaniel, presented
a Mother’s Day gift to her family,
the Rev. and Mrs. Edward Rauff, of Oregon
Avenue, Medford. Now eight weeks old, the
seven puppies are getting a lot of playtime
with the Rauff children, Katey, Pauline and David.
Lieutenant Gary Messinetti, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Pat Messinetti of Mastic Beach,
has earned his Navy Wings of Gold in
advanced flight training at Corpus Christi,
Texas. He also holds a commercial pilot’s
license. Messinetti, who will be stationed
at Patuxent River Navy Base, Maryland,
will return home on furlough with his wife,
Patricia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James
Venables of Mastic Beach.

“One small step for man, one giant
leap for mankind” brought an eerie
scene to television sets throughout the
free world, while people here watched
in amazement, disbelief and profound
feeling. Few, if any, “average” citizens
of this world ever thought they would
see two men step foot upon the celestial
body which brightens our darkened sky,
the moon. But on Sunday, July 20, 1969,
the unbelievable happened and, to make
the whole thing even more unbelievable,
their actions were sent back for all to
see by the magic of a television camera.
George Loizides, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Theodore Loizides of Dogwood Lane,
who has graduated from Oneonta State
College with a Bachelor of Science
degree in education, has accepted a
teaching position with Patchogue High School.
Arthur Benincasa of Waverly Avenue
at the June 20 assembly of the South
Ocean Avenue Junior High School, was
given the Golden Hammer Award for
excellence in industrial arts and for
exhibiting superior effort in the shop
program for aiding other students as
well as contributing tireless effort and
cooperation. Mr. Benincasa has just
completed the eighth grade.
About $1,200 in $5 and $10 bills, $46 in
change and $25 in nickels were reported
by Fifth squad detectives as stolen
last week from the Hometown Tavern
on West Main Street. The investigating
officer, Det. Thomas Liguori, said that
the money was discovered missing from
a safe in the tavern by Lawrence Spitale,
son of the owner, when he went to open
the safe Wednesday night.
The “Anna Maria,” flagship of the
Greek Line, will be home base for the
next four weeks for Charlie Silhan,
Ricky Kurshner and Paul Silhan, all
graduates of Patchogue High School.
The young group will be playing rock
band music on board the ship from July
18 to Aug. 18 and will enjoy a few days
in Bermuda on each trip.
Combat basic training is being given
Private Santiago Pastor of Patchogue at
Fort Jackson, S.C. Upon graduation, he
will enter the Army Supply School.
Ten-year-old Michael Salvitti of East
Third Street caught a 17-inch largemouth
bass recently while fishing at the
Mill Pond in Patchogue. Mike caught the
big one at 1 p.m. July 20 using a night
crawler for bait. The fish weighed in at 2
pounds, 1½ ounces, measured 17 inches
in length with an 8-inch girth. Mike’s
catch is entered in the Patchogue Fishing
Club contest, which might well add a
trophy to the thrill he enjoyed in landing the large fish.
On July 10 Marilyn Wallen, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John Wallen of South
Howells Point Road, Bellport, celebrated
her 17th birthday with a theatre party
for a group of her friends.
Mrs. Andrew M. Underhill of Bellport
Lane and Mrs. George Morse of
Brookhaven Road spent last week traveling
through the New England states
visiting antique shops and historical sites.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Reynolds of Fuoco
Street gave a party Sunday for their son
Tony’s 4th birthday. About 35 guests attended.
Miss Donna Ramirez of Norwalk,
Conn., spent Saturday night with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ramirez of
Circuit Road. She was here to attend the
wedding of Miss Pamela Strickland to
Brian Hannon Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Patricia Lee of Homan Avenue,
Blue Point, and her sister, Miss Kathleen
Mahon of East Islip and New York City
returned last Thursday from a threeweek
trip through Italy, where they visited
many places of historical interest.
Mrs. Lee is a fourth-grade teacher in the
Bay Avenue School in Patchogue.

Victor Viggiano after their wedding
ceremony June 28 in Our Lady of the
Snow R.C. Church, Blue Point. Bride is
the former Miss Mary Esther Epstein
of Bayport. Her husband is from Patchogue
and is a science teacher in the
Selden Junior High School.
