Yeoman School at the Coast Guard Station
Training Center, Governor’s Island,
N.Y., has graduated CG seaman apprentice
Thomas Merlo, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel Merlo of Patchogue and whose
wife is the former Miss Carol L. Reich of Patchogue.
Martin Romeo of West Lake Drive, Patchogue,
a student at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Cambridge,
Mass., is a member of its concert band,
which, as part of a current southern tour,
appeared Tuesday at the Symphony Hall
of the Atlanta Memorial Arts Center,
Atlanta, Ga. After playing in Orlando, Fla.
yesterday, they are scheduled for performances
in Sanford and Jacksonville today
and tomorrow before returning home. Mr.
Romeo plays the trombone.
Mrs. Joseph F. Polimeni, a member of the
Barton Avenue School faculty and a teacher
in the Patchogue-Medford School District
for the past 15 years, is the mother of
Sgt. Joseph F. Polimeni, who was one of two
airmen chosen to escort vice president
Spiro Agnew at recent wreath-bearing
ceremonies honoring the war dead, in the
Philippines. Mr. Polimeni, the sergeant’s
father, is with Pan American Airlines.
At the Father and Son Beans and Franks
Supper tomorrow in the Congregational
Church, Paul Roman of the Brookhaven
National Laboratory, Upton, will give a
glass-blowing demonstration.
At sea is Navy seaman apprentice Kenneth
A. Prutting of Patchogue, aboard the
attack aircraft carrier USS Franklin D.
Roosevelt. He is serving in the Mediterranean
with the Sixth Fleet.
Mrs. Thomas Keegan, president of St.
Francis de Sales Parents Auxiliary, held
a meeting at her home in preparation for
the annual St. Patrick’s Day dance to be
held the evening of March 7 in the parish
hall on South Ocean Avenue. Chairmen
of the affair are Mr. and Mrs. Pete Newham.
Music will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Army Specialist 4 James R. Cassidy of
Patchogue has been assigned as a carpenter
to the 397th Engineer Group in Vietnam.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schumpf of Patchogue
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Margaret Schumpf, to Sergeant
John Kirchner, son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Kirchner of Patchogue. Miss Schumpf
is the manager of Parklane Hosiery in
the Smith Haven Mall. Sgt. Kirchner is
stationed with the Marine Corps at Camp
Lejeune, N.C. No date has been set for the wedding.
Fourteen members of Bellport Boy
Scout Troop 28 attended the annual Polar
Bear Hike and Camp-Out held over the
weekend at Camp Edey, Sayville. Two
patrols, under the guidance of Scott Wruck
and Kent Rahm, received first place Blue
Ribbon at the closing ceremonies for high
scores obtained at the trail station stops
along the five-mile hike.
Second Lieutenant and Mrs. Peter Otis
Paige spent the weekend with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Paige of Bellport Lane.
Lieut. Paige has completed his training at
Fort Knox, Ky., and will be stationed at
Fort Holabird in Baltimore, Md., for further training.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hendrie and daughters,
Susan and Barbara, of Thornhedge
Road spent the weekend skiing at Belleayre Mountain.
W. Dorsey Smith of Bellport Lane and Wallace
Ross of Academy Lane had exhibits at
the National Boat Show held in the New
York Coliseum during the past two weeks.
Nick Petrillo, head golf professional at
the Bellport Golf Club, recently underwent
surgery to his left foot. The surgery
involved removing some bone formation,
which was impairing movement of his
tendon. Nick’s accident occurred nearly
seven years ago, when a fall from a ladder
left him with the complications. Assisting
Nick until he gets back on his feet are his
charming wife, Jeanette, and his assistant,
Don Stephani of East Patchogue. The affable
golf instructor from Bellport hopes to
be teaching and playing by the late spring.
Georgine Welch of Southaven Avenue,
Medford, celebrated her 102nd birthday
Wednesday. Georgine is in the best of
health. Her son, Lawrence, lives with her.

Mary Lou Walters, a member of the
senior class, has been selected as
sweetheart of the Patchogue High
School chapter of the Distributive
Education Clubs of America. The
DECA Club is one of the busiest
at the high school. Its members are
teenagers planning careers in marketing
and distribution. The Patchogue
chapter is recognized as an
outstanding chapter in the New York
association of DECA clubs. As Patchogue
sweetheart, Mary Lou will
compete against other such winners
in a variety of categories at a countywide
contest to be held Wednesday.
Miss June Morpurgo of Patchogue is
one of 155 students at Western New
Mexico University, Silver City, N.M.,
to be named to the Commendation
List for recognition of her superior
academic performance for the 1969 fall semester.
The combined efforts of St. Francis
de Sales, Grace AME Zion, United Methodist,
Congregational, Emanuel Lutheran
and St. Paul’s Episcopal churches will
be represented in a service for Christian
unity, to be held Feb. 22 at St.
Francis de Sales R.C. Church, South Ocean Avenue.
Patchogue Kiwanis Club president
James McPeak recently presented the
coveted Distinguished Service Award
from Kiwanis International to past
president Bill Glatzel, who just retired
after 44 years with the Long Island
Lighting Company.
Mrs. Ruth Jones of Patchogue
announces the engagement of her
daughter, Diane, to Private James
Kirchner of the U.S. Marine Corps,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kirchner
of Patchogue. Miss Jones is a sophomore
at Patchogue High School. Pvt.
Kirchner is in training at the Marine
base, Parris Island, S.C. No wedding
plans have as yet been made.
The 11th birthday of Lisa Lawson,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerard
Lawson of Americus Avenue, East
Patchogue, was celebrated Jan. 30
with a slumber party attended by
11 of her friends. Each girl brought
her own sleeping bag and a birthday
breakfast of pancakes was enjoyed
by all. Attending the festivities were
Chrissy Holland, Sue Velton, Joanne Del
Broccolo, Anne Wenner, Karen Hayward,
and Kathy Roman.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Hines of Maple
Drive, East Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Laraine
Frances, to John McLean, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John McLean of Southold.
Miss Hines is a graduate of Seton
Hall High School, Patchogue, and the
State University at Farmingdale. Mr.
McLean, a graduate of Farmingdale
University, is now a senior at Cornell
University. A June wedding is planned.
Two local airmen at Sheppard AFB,
Texas, Anthony J. Bruce of Patchogue
and Donald M. Litcher of Bellport, have
been graduated from training courses.
Airman Bruce, having completed
an AF freight specialist course, is
being assigned for duty to Norton
AFB, Calif. An electronics systems
repairman, Airman Litcher will go to
a unit at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mullaney and
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Holland, of Bellport,
attended the wedding of John
Pfeifle to Miss Mary Ellen Hinman in
New Canaan, Conn., Saturday. Mr.
Pfeifle is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
L. Pfeifle of Kingfield, Me., formerly of Bellport.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Warburton of
Bieselin Road have just returned
from a trip to Lisbon and the Algarde, Portugal.
Paul Butler has returned to the University
of Scranton, Pa., after visiting
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Butler
of Academy Lane, between semesters.
Weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Meagher of Circuit Road were Sgt.
and Mrs. Arthur Fawcett and son. Sgt.
Fawcett is in the Marine Corps stationed
at Floyd Bennett Field.

Vietnam assignments have been given
two local Army men, Privates 1/c Paul
A. LaGrega of Patchogue and Anthony V.
Martinez of Medford. Pvt. LaGrega is a
field wireman with the 83rd Field Artillery.
Pvt. Martinez serves as artilleryman with
the 199th Light Infantry Brigade.
The Patchogue Kiwanis Club recently
honored coach Henry Read for his
undefeated football season this past year
and his many years of service at Seton
Hall High School at a dinner held at
Tojen’s restaurant. Mr. Read has been
coaching at Seton Hall since 1939. There
to present the honors were Jim McPeak,
president of the Kiwanis Club, program
chairman Ted Rickman and John Schmitt
of the New York Jets, an alumnus of
Seton Hall and former player.
Happiness for Mr. and Mrs. Edward R.
Ehrhardt was that first moment together
after the wedding ceremony in St.
Sylvester’s R.C. Church, Medford, Jan.
31. The couple greeted their guests at 112
Lounge, Medford, and spent a week at
Nassau in the Bahamas before making
their home in Patchogue. The bride is
the former Miss Barbara J. Cassino of Patchogue.
Enter Patchogue’s first win of the
season last Friday as the Raiders beat
Ward Melville, 68-62, on the losers’ court.
Patchogue’s lucky number is 13 and for
those who are superstitious, it was Friday
the 13th. And to show that two wrongs
do make a right, Patchogue had lost
their first 13 games. What was the magic
potion that gave the previously winless
Raiders their first triumph? Coach Don
Campbell said jokingly, “Prayer.” Then he
responded that it “was a mixture of good
shooting and hitting the open man. We
didn’t throw as many balls away as we did
in previous games. Plus, we had a bundle
of confidence and the fans’ support was excellent.”
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McKenna of
Patchogue announce the engagement
of their daughter, Linda, to R. Kirk
Ridgeway of Miller Place. Miss McKenna
is a graduate of the State University at
Oneonta, N.Y. She is teaching fourth grade
in Stony Brook. Mr. Ridgeway, a gymnast
at Springfield College, Springfield, Mass.,
will graduate in June. A June wedding is planned.
A group of friends from Bellport and
Brookhaven visited Mr. and Mrs. Vernon
O’Rourke in their new home on Shelter Island Saturday.
Miss Julie Bergin, daughter of Mrs.
Edward J. Bergin of Thornhedge Road,
Bellport, celebrated her 17th birthday
Monday night with a dinner party for a few friends.
Katrina Bergskaug, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Bergskaug of General
McLean Drive, celebrated her 9th birthday
belatedly with a Valentine party for a
group of her friends Saturday afternoon.
Her birthday falls so near Christmas that
she celebrates it at a later date.
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Butler and two month-
old son, Jeffrey, have moved to
their new home in Oceanside. Mrs. Butler
is the former Miss Donna Grucci, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Grucci of Station Road.
Bellporters staying at the Hillsboro
Club, Pompano Beach, Fla., are the Merrill
Footes, Cyril Redmonds, Horatio Grays and
Mrs. Robert B. Lea.
Anthony Magee made the billboard and
poster in the back of Our Lady of the
Snow Church, Blue Point, which many
people have inquired about.
Lyn Mulligan, Karen Adams, Barbara
Weiler and Maureen Houston together
with Eileen Harper, Gill Roberts, Debbie
Murphy, Kelly Adams, Kathy Currarie and
Denise Kelly have formed a cheerleaders
team with their coach, Mrs. Marilyn
Antonacci. The girls will appear in their
new uniforms Tuesday evening, when
Our Lady of the Snow CYO basketball
team plays St. John Nepomucene of
Bohemia at the Academy Street School.
