The golden wedding anniversary of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Mayer of Medford Avenue,
Patchogue, was celebrated recently at
Tojen’s restaurant for about 85 friends
and relatives, including Mr. Mayer’s
best man and brother, John Mayer, and
Mrs. Mayer’s bridesmaid and sister,
Miss Erna Neuman, as well as their two
sons, Robert and Richard. Mr. Mayer is a
retired flower grower. They received many
congratulatory telegrams, cards and calls.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Rockwell of
Clinton Avenue, Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Sharon, to
Michael Piccininni, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Nicholas Piccininni of Medford Avenue,
Patchogue. Miss Rockwell is a draftsman
at the Patchogue Electric Light Company.
Mr. Piccininni is in his junior year at the
University of Hartford, Conn.
The second annual Patchogue Jaycees-
Cavalier A.C. Marathon Race was a huge
success Saturday as 77 entries took part
in the 14-mile race that started at the
Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson
Station and ended at the Rider Avenue
entrance to the Shorefront Park in
Patchogue. The winner was Justin Gubbins
of Sayville, who crossed the finish
line in 1 hour, 13 minutes and 24.6 seconds.
At Griffiss AFB, Rome, N.Y., Sgt.
Lawrence B. Puls of Patchogue has
begun a new assignment as a missile
mechanic with the 416th Bomb Wing.
The senior class of Bellport High
School held its annual senior picnic
on the school grounds following the
graduation rehearsal June 15.
The South Bay Art Association
held an outdoor painting party
at Timmy Hermus’ Boatyard in
Brookhaven on Sunday.
Ernest Wruck, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Wruck of Stillwoods Road,
Brookhaven, came home from
Stony Brook Prep School June 6
and is now off on a service project
through Vermont, New Hampshire
and Maine, working in camps for
underprivileged children.
Three local students at the State
University College, New Paltz, N.Y.,
received degrees at graduation
exercises this June. They are
Russell A. Steyert, son of Mr. and
Mrs. William Steyert of Oak Street,
Patchogue; Miss June E. Molander,
daughter of Mrs. Hilda Molander of
Woodland Drive, Mastic Beach, and
Miss Sarah R. Sykes, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. L. Claude Sykes of Masem
Court, Medford.
Twenty-three Blue Point Webelos
had themselves a fabulous weekend
at Southaven Park under the
guidance and supervision of Bob
Walsh, Webelos leader, and Bob Prince,
assistant. To help out with these
energetic 10-11-year-olds were Ed Reilly,
Harry Thyberg and Richard Barthelme. Boy
Scouts who helped entertain and teach
the boys a few scout essentials were Tom
Mazzei, John Pitts, Walter Petrule and Sean Adams.

Michael Paxson, son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Paxson of Oak Street, Patchogue,
who graduated this June from Patchogue
High School, has been initiated into the
National Honor Society. Mr. Paxson plans
on attending Valparaiso University in
Indiana in the fall.
Sgt. Anthony Howland, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Howland of Washington Avenue,
received his honorable discharge June 10
from the U.S. Army, having been stationed
in Colorado since December, following a
tour of duty in Vietnam.
The Patchogue Civic and Garden Club’s
Yard of the Month awards for June were
won by: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fiore in the
northwest section, at 46 Elsworth Street;
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Melice Jr. in the south
section, at 30 Amity Street; Mr. and Mrs.
Vincent Liguori in the west section, at 17
Shore Road, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Richardson in the north section, at 171 Swan Lake Drive.
Airman Kenneth G. Goll, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Gene Goll of Patchogue, has
graduated from the Jet Engine Mechanic
School at Chanute AFB, Ill., with the rating
of outstanding honor student. He is being
assigned to the 470th Tactical Fighter
Wing at George AFB, Calif., as a jet engine mechanic.
Freddy Schwarz, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Schwarz of Bellport, celebrated his
9th birthday with a party for a group of
his friends Tuesday afternoon. They went
swimming at the Brookhaven National Laboratory pool.
Miss Evelyn Moger of Country Club Road
and Miss Vivian Bacon and Miss Dora Eyre
of Hamden, Conn., spent last week on a
motor trip through the New England states.
A June 13 graduate of St. Joseph the
Worker Schools, Kurt Rotzinger of General
McLean Drive holds the distinction of
being the only student to achieve a perfect
attendance record throughout his entire
eight years. He received an award.
Al Roe of South Howells Point Road has
returned home from Sydney, Australia,
where he has opened a metal tape
manufacturing company.
Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Nudo of Barteau
Avenue, Blue Point, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Mary Louise,
to Stephen Borger, son of Mrs. Frances
Desjardin of Brookhaven and the late Amos
Borger. Miss Nudo is employed by the New
York Telephone Company in Patchogue.
Mr. Borger works for Rite Rubber Stamp
Company in East Patchogue. A June 1971
wedding is planned.

July 16
Eight Patchogue High School students
are participating in a summer marine
biology program sponsored by SCOPE,
the Suffolk Educational Center in Stony
Brook. The program offers students and
teachers the chance to take field trips to
several areas of the county and to use the
laboratory facilities at the centers in Port
Jefferson, Patchogue and Westhampton
Beach. The students are: Marian Byrne,
Mary Cohen, Michael Martin, Joseph
Meo, Linda Barlosky, Alan Rhodes, Arthur
Costanzo and Charles Hayman.
The golden wedding anniversary
of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley B. Gordon of
Jayne Avenue, Patchogue, June 22,
was celebrated June 20 at an informal
open house for relatives and friends.
Mr. Gordon retired 10 years ago from
50 years of service with the Long Island
Rail Road, most of that time as Patchogue stationmaster.
Miss Beverly Ann Francis of Patchogue
has been admitted to study at Shepherd
College, Shepherdstown, W. Va.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Garafola of
Cleveland Street, Patchogue, announce
the engagement of their daughter, Cecilia
Marie, to Robert Joseph Amendola, son
of Mr. and Mrs. James Rhodes of Bell
Avenue, Blue Point. Miss Garafola is a
1969 graduate of Patchogue High School
and is employed at the Oystermen’s Bank
in Sayville. Mr. Amendola attended Locust
Valley High School and is a mechanic
employed by Timber Point Golf. No date
has been set for the wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Winsche of Shore
Road, Bellport, took their daughter,
Martha, to Raymond, Me., last week. She
will attend Amherst Summer Music
Center for the month of July.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Hawkins of
Bayview Street, Bellport, attended the
annual reunion picnic of the Hawkins
Association held in Southold June 22.
Families connected with the Hawkins
came from all over Long Island.
Completing the Air Force air freight
specialist course at Sheppard AFB, Texas,
is Airman Paul F. Schait of Brookhaven.
He will serve with the Strategic Air
Command at Plattsburgh AFB, N.Y.

Leja Beach (as some old timers still call it) encompasses

A - Al Brown.
They built the Casino, Hotel and Harbor Store. ".
The Davis family deed the beach area to Brookhaven Town.

Steve R. Lewis, son of Mrs. Joanne Lewis
of Patchogue, was acclaimed top salesman
for E.R. Moore, nationwide. Mr. Lewis
is a 1964 graduate of Patchogue High
School and of Mississippi State University,
class of 1969.
Joseph Charles Rupolo, infant son of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Rupolo Jr., of Medford
Avenue, was born July 8 in St. John’s
Hospital, Smithtown. The baby weighed 7
pounds, 6 ounces at birth.
Joseph Nehm, son of Mrs. Mary Nehm of
Rider Avenue, has been admitted to the
1970-71 freshman class at Sarah Lawrence
College, Yonkers, N.Y.
Miss Cheryl Habel of Washington Avenue
has received recognition for outstanding
academic achievement by being named
to the Dean’s List at Russell Sage College, Troy, N.Y.
A summery setting made an appropriate
background for the wedding picture
of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Joseph Benanti,
who were married June 14 in St. Francis
de Sales R.C. Church, Patchogue. A motor
tour of New England and Canada was
their wedding trip and they are now living
in Patchogue. The bride is the former
Miss Lynda Lee Rowland of Patchogue.
Cruising in the Montauk area this week
are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Streit of Browns
Lane, Bellport aboard their ketch, Wooden World II.
Francis Spitzer, son of the Rev. and Mrs.
Francis Spitzer, is spending the month of
July with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Spitzer of St. Germain, France.
Miss Alice Quatrochi of Circuit Road
and Miss Jane Kirchgessner of Horseblock
Road spent last Wednesday in New York
City. After lunch at the Lobster and Chop
House, they attended a matinee performance
of the musical, “Man of La Mancha.”
Friday, Mrs. Donald Harris of Beaver
Court, Brookhaven, was awarded the
Panasonic AM-FM radio at the Senior
High School Awards Night for the benefit
of the Bellport Little League.
Miss Paola Ferri, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Anthony Ferri of Montauk Highway,
Blue Point, took her pony, Queenie,
to the Patchogue Pet Parade last Wednesday
and the pony won a silver cup and a
$5 gift certificate.
Playing this week at the Patchogue Theatre:
“Kelly’s Heroes,” starring Don Rickles,
Carroll O’Connor, Clint Eastwood
and Telly Savalas; at the Plaza Theatre:
“Airport,” with Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin.
