Two Patchoguers enrolled in the
freshman class at Bethany College,
Bethany, W. Va., are William Dvorak of
Bay Avenue and Richard D. Zeidler of
Whippoorwill Lane.
Seaman recruit Jimmy Towle, son of
Mrs. Jean White of New North Ocean
Avenue, Patchogue, has been enjoying
a 14-day leave at home after having
completed basic training at the Great
Lakes Naval Training Center, Ill. His
new assignment is service aboard the
USS Kitty Hawk, stationed at San Diego, Calif.
Sheri Lyn Van Ginhoven, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Neil Van Ginhoven of
Grenville Avenue, celebrated her 3rd
birthday Aug. 18 with a party for relatives
and friends at Water Island.
Muscular dystrophy was the reason
for a carnival held by a group of
young people at Father Tortora Park
last week. Two of the organizers were
Gary Schulman and David Bamburger.
Approximately 150 youngsters attended
and close to $100 was realized from their efforts.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Greenwald and
son, Mitchell, of Philadelphia, Pa.,
recently spent four days visiting their
cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Schiatta
and family of Nottingham Avenue.
A highlight of their stay was a visit
to TWA and all its facilities at Kennedy
Airport, where Mr. Schiatta is employed.
David E. Ashline, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Ashline of Taber Street, has
been named to the Dean’s List of Distinguished
Students at the State University
of New York, Buffalo. Entering
his senior year, he is majoring in
psychology. His brother, John W., has
been named to the Dean’s List for the
spring semester at Suffolk County
Community College, Selden. He is a
sophomore working toward a liberal arts degree.
Reporting for duty at the Marine
Air Reserve Training Detachment,
Naval Air Station, Dallas, Texas, is
Marine Private 1/c William J. Moore Jr.,
of Patchogue.
Miss Janet Maas of Country Club
Road, Bellport, is spending the
remaining summer weeks visiting
her brother, Sgt. Warren Maas, who is
stationed at Lackland Air Force Base,
San Antonio, Texas.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Williams of South
Country Road have returned from two
weeks vacation at their summer home
on North Hero Island, Vt.
Robert Stirling and daughter, Ruth, of
Edgar Avenue, Brookhaven, drove to
Springfield, Mass., Saturday to attend
a horse show, returning on Sunday.

Parishioners of the Patchogue Congregational
Church are expressing
regret at the resignation this summer of
Miss Erma Conklin as financial secretary,
after 23 ½ years of faithful service. Miss
Conklin is residing at the Cedar Grove
Adult Home, Blue Point. Miss Marcia
Deedy of Vernon Street, Patchogue, has
accepted the post, along with her current
duties in the church office.
Mrs. Eleanor Shadel of Patchogue, a
member of the Bellport Women’s Golf
Club, had an “ace”—hole in one—on
the 10th hole at the Bellport Golf Club
last Thursday. Members in her foursome
were Carol Papanek, Marilyn Lansman
and Gert Knight, all members of the golf
club. This entitles her to a chance at the
drawing for a free trip to Scotland.
Participating in the Air Force Reserve
Officers Training Corps’ field training
encampment at Pease AFB, N.H., is
Arthur W. Egan Jr. of Patchogue, who is a
member of the AFROTC unit at Syracuse
University, N.Y.
Harvey McChesney III, of Bellport, completed
his tour of duty at Scofield Barracks,
Hawaii, and has received his
discharge from the U.S. Army. He and
Mrs. McChesney moved last week to
Bethlehem, Pa., where he will resume
his studies at Lehigh University this fall.
Lynda Del Castillo, Connie Cummings and
Ann Mullaney, of Bellport, visited for the
weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Hendrie of Sayville as guests of
Susan Hendrie. They sailed in the Labor
Day Regatta held at the Sayville Yacht Club.
Miss Barbara Snyder and Miss Audrey
Snyder returned last week on the liner
Ile de France after spending a month
touring in France.
Joseph Beitel, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Beitel of Fuoco Lane, left Tuesday
to enter his freshman year at Cornell University.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hall and family
of Woodland Park Road vacationed for
the month of August at their summer
cottage in the Catskills near Deposit.
A cooperative picnic was given for
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bedell and Mr. and
Mrs. Roland F. Smith at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Albert Hallock of Pearl Street
Saturday night. Twenty-two people attended.
Mrs. Robert Zukowski and her two children,
Denise and Darin of Pine Street,
Brookhaven, visited her sister-in-law,
Mrs. Robert Moore of Charlotte, N.C.,
for two weeks this August. They left by
airplane from Kennedy Airport. It was
the children’s first airplane ride and
they enjoyed flying.
Jo Ann’s Beauty Shop of Medford
held a wig demonstration Thursday.
Refreshments were served to 35 guests.
Mrs. Rose Mistler of Medford received
a wig as an award. Other gifts went
to Mrs. Anne Whittner and Mrs. Jennie Furery.

September 17
Miss Cynthia Tucker, daughter of Mrs.
Beatrice Tucker of Rider Avenue, Patchogue,
is leaving today to attend Barnard
College in New York City. A 1970 graduate
of Patchogue High School, she will major
in French and English literature.
One of Patchogue’s “Lucky Balloons”
was found last week on Nantucket Island.
Miss N. Bond of Concord, Mass., while
walking along the Atlantic Beach, found
the balloon with its message to return it to
the Merchants Division in Patchogue for a
prize drawing. Miss Bond in her note said,
“I won’t be able to redeem this in person,
but I feel I’ve been introduced to Patchogue
even at a distance.” This was the furthest
balloon reported to the Merchants Division,
who arranged to send Miss Bond a
special gift. Almost 100 balloons were found
and returned, from Islip and Brookhaven
towns, during the two-week period.
The wedding ceremony of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Foray took place Aug. 16 in Our Lady
of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, Patchogue.
The couple is living in Rockford, Ill., where
Mr. Foray is employed by the May Drug
Company and Mrs. Foray, the former Miss
Eleanor Vendetti of Patchogue, will teach in
the Rockford school system.
A check for $1,000 was recently presented
to Francis Fosmire, head administrator
for Brookhaven Memorial Hospital,
by students representing the Patchogue
High School Class of 1970: Richard Dombrowski,
Conrad Ehrlich, Debbie Peterson and
Howard Reed. The money, raised through
senior-sponsored activities, was left in the
class account after graduation exercises in
June. It will go towards the purchase of an
Isolette infant incubator, which will serve
as an intensive care unit for premature and
sick babies.
Margaret Ell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John Ell of Fuoco Street, Bellport, celebrated
her 9th birthday Sept. 5 at Davis Park on
Fire Island, where the family was vacationing
on their boat, Mar-Dav III.
Mr. and Mrs. Deward Eades and family
have returned to their home on George
Court after spending the past year in
Madrid, Spain. Mr. Eades, who was on
a year’s sabbatical from Bellport Senior
High School, spent the year painting and
studying Spanish art. Erik and Brian
Eades attended the American School of
Madrid and their sister, Enid, studied at the
University of Madrid. She is now attending
the University of Louisville, in Kentucky,
majoring in Spanish.
Miss Ann Ebersole, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Walter Ebersole of General McLean
Drive, has started her freshman year at
Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va. Her
brother, John, is in his senior year at Cornell University.
Newcomers to Bellport are Mr. and Mrs.
Anthony Vessa, daughter Elaina and son Jeffrey,
who have moved to Bieselin Road.

John Vander Zalm was posing before the camera
after their wedding ceremony Aug. 15
in Mary Immaculate R.C. Church, Bellport.
The bride, the former Miss Janet Siebus
of Blue Point, held a fan-shaped bridal
bouquet designed and fashioned by her
husband. The couple is at home on Head
of the Neck Road, Bellport, after their wedding
trip to the Pocono Mountains, Pa.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stutey and
daughter, Carol, of Avery Avenue,
Patchogue, recently returned from a
visit to California, where they attended
the wedding of their son, Robert, to Miss
Marsha Welter. Following the wedding they
spent two weeks visiting San Francisco,
San Diego and Disneyland, Calif., Las
Vegas, Nev., and Tijuana, Mexico.
A baby shower for Mrs. Barbara Skapinski
of Coram was given by her sister, Miss
Chris Santangelo of Prospect Avenue at the
home of her cousin, Mrs. John Zelenka in
Bayport. Guests included 30 relatives and
friends. Mrs. Skapinski is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Santangelo of Prospect Avenue.
Three Patchogue High School graduates,
class of 1969, former candy stripers at
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, were
capped at exercises Friday at the Catholic
Medical Center School of Nursing in
Jamaica. They were Miss Roberta A.
Russo, Miss Karen Ann Smith and Miss Karin Themann.
A promotion to his present rank has
been given Marine Lance Corporal
Michael J. Celementano of Patchogue, who
is serving with the First Marine Division in Vietnam.
The Palermo family, former residents of
Jennings Avenue, held a family reunion
Saturday night at the summer home of
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Novick at Davis Park,
Fire Island. Nine brothers and sisters,
including Mrs. Novick, the former Miss
Louise Palermo, and their families were
in attendance. Celebrated also was the
birthday of Michael Palermo and the 40th
wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Palermo.
Celebrating her 8th birthday Sunday was
Eva Rosen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin
Rosen of Munsell Road, East Patchogue.
Enjoying the party were Tommy Neumann,
Laurie, Doreen and Raymond Cicalese, Lisa
Temple and Brian and Beth Rosen, Eva’s brother and sister.
Mr. and Mrs. John Tully of North Howells
Point Road, Bellport, have returned from
a three weeks’ vacation to France and
England. They met their son, Jay, in
Paris, where he has been headquartered
since April while filming the Grand Prix throughout Europe.
Peter Rant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Rant of South Country Road, left recently
for Idaho for his third year at Idaho State University.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Klein Sr. and family
of Country Club Road, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Klein Jr. and family of East Patchogue and
Mr. and Mrs. Robert McCleary of South
Country Road recently spent a few days at
Cherry Valley, near Cooperstown.
Miss MaryJo Alburger, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. David Alburger of Beaver Dam
Road, Brookhaven, spent the early part
of the summer traveling through Spain
and France. She will be staying in Rome
until school resumes, at which time, under
the exchange program, she will start
her junior year at Glasgow University in
Scotland. MaryJo is a student at Colby
College in Waterville, Me., where she is an art major.
