The Village of Patchogue Recreation
Department recently concluded its most
successful Men’s Touch Football season.
An awards ceremony was held at the
Cavalier Athletic Club. Individual trophies
were presented to each member
of the championship Cavalier AC, which
won the league title for the third straight
year. Tom Stockner and Tom Julian were
co-recipients of the leading scorer trophy.
Both scored 102 points.
Mr. and Mrs. William Engel of Patchogue
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Carol Ellen, to Harlan Schantz,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Schantz of
Patchogue. Miss Engel, a 1967 graduate
of Patchogue High School, is attending
the University of Miami, where she is a
senior completing her nurse’s training.
Mr. Schantz graduated from Patchogue
High School in 1966 and attended Suffolk
County Community College. He is
currently serving with the U.S. Navy,
stationed aboard the USS La Salle in Norfolk, Va.
A new duty after serving in Vietnam
has been assigned to Air Force Sergeant
Mark E. Smith of Patchogue. He is an air
traffic controller at Otis AFB, Mass.
Vinnie Brandi of Amsterdam Avenue,
East Patchogue is home after a little over
a year in Vietnam, attached to the 101st Airborne Division.
Congratulations are in order for James
Colichio, who became the new Hagerman
Fire Department chief Friday. He succeeds
Nick Masem, who was chief for the past two years.
Mr. and Mrs. George Vineyard and family
of South Brewster Lane, Bellport, spent
New Year’s weekend skiing at Scotch
Valley in Stamford, N.Y. Barbara Vineyard
has returned to her studies at Sarah Lawrence College.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hambley of Blue
Point announce the engagement of their
daughter, Janet, to Bruce Bastiaanse, son
of Mrs. Rita Connors of Blue Point. Miss
Hambley and Mr. Bastiaanse are both
graduates of James Wilson Young High
School, Bayport, and both are employed
by the New York Telephone Company,
Miss Hambley in Patchogue and Mr.
Bastiaanse in St. James. A late summer
wedding is planned.

The third floor was gutted in a fire,
noon Monday, at the Church Street
Apartment complex at the corner of
Railroad Avenue in Patchogue. The third
floor was gutted, the roof caved in, and
26 residents, 15 families, were rendered
homeless, some only temporarily, as
families were housed in motels or went
to relatives. The fire revealed a splendid
period of community effort as Patchogue
firefighters, police, the Red Cross and
Salvation Army, and a neighbor in a
nearby house all cooperated in rescue
attempts and to help those made homeless.
Paul V. Pontieri of Cedar Avenue will
receive his Bachelor of Science degree
in education from the State University
at Buffalo at commencement exercises
held Sunday at Kleinhans Music Hall
in Buffalo. He specialized in exceptional
children education.
Mr. and Mrs. Chester Danowski of
Schoenfeld Boulevard, Patchogue,
announced the engagement of their
daughter, Jo-Ann Maureen Danowski, to
Charles “Skip” Todd III, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Todd Jr., of Robert Street,
Patchogue, on Christmas Eve. The brideto-
be is a graduate of Patchogue High
School, class of 1970, and is a secretary
at the Niemeyer Sign Company. Her fiancé,
a 1967 graduate of Patchogue High,
who has recently completed a tour of
duty with the Armed Forces, stationed
at Panama, is employed by the New York
Telephone Company.
Suzanne Lengyel, an eighth-grade student
at St. Joseph the Worker School
in East Patchogue, has “outspelled” the
students in her school. In two weeks,
Suzanne will compete against 11 other
local parochial-school winners in the
Rockville Centre Diocesan zone contest.
Mr. and Mrs. Nino Rubino of George
Street and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tuzza and
their children, Nina, Doreen and Adam,
of Woodacres Road, both East Patchogue,
attended a family get-together at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Taterno of Hicksville.
Paul Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Gordon of Academy Lane, Bellport, left
Sunday for Assumption College, Richardton,
N.D., after spending the holidays with his family.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stonebridge of General
McLean Drive entertained at a family
dinner party last Wednesday in honor
of their son, Dean, who was 13 years old.
On Friday Dean celebrated his birthday
with a group of friends, who went to the
Brookhaven Lab pool with him.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar N. Hansen of East
Patchogue announce the engagement of
their daughter, Gloria, to James McGowan,
son of Mrs. Veronica McGowan of Blue
Point and the late James A. McGowan.
Miss Hansen is employed at the Village
Hall in Patchogue. Mr. McGowan
is a teacher at the Bellport Senior High
School. No date has been set for the wedding.
Gini McLaughlin, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Bernard McLaughlin of Pheasant
Way, Blue Point, returned to the State
University at Oneonta Jan. 5 after spending
the holidays at home.
First Lieutenant Fred Magner, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Magner of Highland
Avenue, Blue Point, returned to Fort
Polk, La., New Year’s Day after spending
furlough with the U.S. Army with his family.

Marine Private 1/c Philip Schweers, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Preston of Patchogue,
has been graduated from the
Individual Combat Training School at
the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pausewang of Lee
Avenue, accompanied by their three
daughters, Joann, Mary Lou and Kathy,
are home from a 10-day trip to Florida,
taken during the Christmas season.
Traveling along the East Coast, they visited
Miami Beach and the Everglades.
On the return trip along the western
shore, they stopped at Sarasota and Silver Springs.
Charles Mancuso, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Angelo Mancuso of Waverly Avenue,
left Monday for Concord College, Athens,
W.Va., where he is majoring in
physical education. He has just completed
two and a half years of study
at Suffolk County Community College, Selden.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifton D. Raynor of Rider
Avenue, Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Brenda
Lee, to Robert C. Delaney Jr., of Blue Point.
Miss Raynor is a graduate of Patchogue
High School and is employed at Island
State Bank in Patchogue. Mr. Delaney
is a graduate of James Wilson Young
High School, Bayport, and is employed
at Peck and Hail Industries in West Sayville
as a mechanic. No date has been set
for the wedding.
Miss Susan Tully, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John Tully of South Howells Point
Road, Bellport, has returned to her studies
at the University of Tampa, Fla.,
where she is in her senior year.
Mr. and Mrs. Allan Wood of Circuit
Road and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Carleton
of Browns Lane went to New York Sunday
afternoon to see the Ice Capades at
Madison Square Garden.
A surprise party was given for Elizabeth
Shreeve at her home on South Howells
Point Road Sunday afternoon in celebration
of her 15th birthday. Ana Rosenblum
planned the party. Other fiends
attending were Ann Bookless, Nancy Regalmuto,
Bonnie Silverman, Judy Weinstock, Eve
Alburger and Joie Travis.

On completing basics at Lackland
AFB, Texas, Airman Mary A. Donohue of
Patchogue received her first duty assignment.
She will go to Dover AFB, Del., for
training and duty in the administrative field.
The Technical School at the Naval
Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill., has
graduated Navy Petty Officer 3/c Steven
M. Hutton of Patchogue from its electronics course.
Mr. and Mrs. Lazlo Mezoe of Patchogue,
formerly of Bellmore, announce
the engagement of their daughter, Diane
Elizabeth Dovica, to Bruce Lawrence Weid,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Weid of Patchogue.
The future bride is a graduate
of Suffolk County Community College,
Selden, and is working as a dental assistant
in Patchogue. Mr. Weid is the president
of Rudy’s Meat Market, Inc., North
Patchogue. A July wedding is planned.
Miss Kathleen Herrera, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. John Herrera of Baycrest Avenue,
Bellport, is home from King’s College,
Briarcliff Manor, for the semester break.
Laura Werner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Werner of General McLean Drive,
celebrated her 8th birthday with a few of
her friends Friday night. After dining on
pizzas, they attended a marionette show
at the Bellport Middle School, and then
returned to the Werner’s home for the
birthday cake.
