Courses having been completed

both of Patchogue, are awaiting new
assignments. Pvt. Daniello graduated
from a scoop loader and rough terrain
forklift operator course at Fort Leonard
Wood, Mo. Pvt. Fedele received his basics
at the Army Training Center, Fort Dix,
N.J.
Celebrating their 50th wedding
anniversary were Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Gillette of Avery Avenue at a surprise
party June 26, given for them at the
Whirlaway Inn, Patchogue, by their
children. Attending were 60 of their
relatives and friends and music was by
Carl Husnik.
A smiling couple were Mr. and Mrs.
Michael Anthony Perry after their
wedding June 12 in Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel R.C. Church, Patchogue. Their
wedding trip was to Niagara Falls and
upstate New York. Mr. Perry and his
bride, the former Miss Diana Susan
Rivera of East Patchogue, are residing
in Patchogue, where he is employed by
the Patchogue Post Office. Bride is a
practical nurse at Brookhaven Memorial
Hospital, East Patchogue.
Eric Pelish, son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Pelish of Cedar Avenue, has received his
honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy
after seven years of active service. He has
now been sworn in as a policeman with
the Norwich, Conn., police department.
He and his wife, Lynn, and daughter,
Debra, make their home in Norwich.
Miss Sheryl Ann Wolff of Herbert Circle
and Miss Barbara A. Clemente of Harris
Street have been admitted to study at
Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.
Both girls are graduates of Patchogue
High School.
Completion of an automotive repair
course at the Army Ordnance Center and
School, the Aberdeen Proving Ground in
Maryland, has been accomplished by
Specialist 4 David W. Smith of Patchogue,
who was then promoted to his present
rank. He will leave soon for overseas
duty in Germany.
The board of education for the Bellport
Central School District No. 4 Tuesday
night elected Sullivan Palermo as its
president and Malcolm Stewart as vice
president.
The Bellport home of John Schleede
on South Brewster Lane was hit by fire
at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Bellport
Fire Department Chief Quentin Reynolds
said that 60 volunteer firefighters and
seven engines, including two from the
Brookhaven Fire Department, were
used in bringing the fire under control
by 2 a.m. Sunday. Chief Reynolds said
that extensive damage was done to the
second and third floors. He said there
were five persons in the house, Mr. and
Mrs. Schleede and their three children.
No injuries were reported.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beneri of Brooklyn
were Fourth of July Weekend guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Quatrochi of Circuit
Road.
Among the Bellport families attending
the Babylon Yacht Club Fourth of July
Racing Regatta last weekend were the
Donald Streits, the George Roesers,
the Mike Flemings, the David Streits,
the Christopher Streits and the Harvey
McChesneys.
Lieut. Col. And Mrs. Frederick Collins
and children, Thomas, Toby, Kim and
Kelly, are spending several weeks in
Bellport visiting Mrs. Collins’ parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Perino Sr., of Station
Road. Lieutenant Colonel Collins has
completed a four-year tour of duty in
Stuttgart, Germany, and will be stationed
at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
Jane Potter, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Harmon Potter of Rogers Avenue,
Debbie Lancaster, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John Lancaster of Gerard Street,
and Nydia Barone, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. R.A. Barone of North Howells
Point Road, left last Sunday for a tour of
several weeks through Europe.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown of
Brookhaven announce the engagement
of their daughter, Bonnie Lee, to Sidney
J. Germain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman
Germain of Wells, N.Y. Both Miss Brown
and Mr. Germain are recent graduates
of the New York State University
at Cortland. A September wedding is
planned.

Verni’s Delicatessen. The owners have
decided to change the name to Jim’s Deli.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Watson and
children, Phillip, Gavin, Jamie and Jay,
of Beaver Dam Road recently spent a
week’s vacation in Cape Cod. They visited
Mrs. Watson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
William Kettner. All had a marvelous
time sailing.

James R. Nowicki, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward J. Nowicki of Gillette Avenue,
Patchogue, has had the distinction of
making the Dean’s List at Loyola College,
Baltimore, Md. After spending his
summer vacation at his home, he will
enter his senior year at the college in the
fall, majoring in history.
Miss Michele Davidow, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Sanford Davidow, is serving
for the summer in Washington, D.C., as
a political intern to Sen. Birch Bayh of
Indiana. She is the recipient of a grant
from the National Science Foundation
and a student at Beaver College, Glenside,
Pa. Walt’s Auto Body continues to lead
the Patchogue Village Men’s Slo-Ball
League with a 14-0 record. Last Saturday
in the annual All-Star game, they
defeated the league’s All-Star team, 11-7.
Team members include: Bob Suli, Don
Devereaux, Whitey Leavandosky, Tom
Stockner, Bernie Finnerty, Art Corbin, Bob
Stonelli, Don Campbell, Jim Murphy, Ray
Fell and Tom Julian.
Basics have been completed by Army

eight weeks of training were at Fort
Jackson, S.C.
Naval aviation officer candidate Brian
P. Matthiesen of Patchogue is now
undergoing flight training at the Naval
Air Station, Pensacola, Fla.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Crawford of
Gilbert Street announce the engagement
of their daughter, Andrea, to David
Crockett, son of Mr. and Mrs. George
Caliguiri of Laurel Street. Miss Crawford
is a June graduate of Patchogue High
School. Mr. Crockett is in the employ of
the Long Island Rail Road. No date has
been set for the wedding.
Well-wishers surrounded Mr. and Mrs.
Christopher W. Loglia upon leaving the
altar of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C.
Church, Patchogue, after their wedding
ceremony June 5. Their reception was at
the VFW Hall, Medford. Mr. Loglia, who
is a Suffolk County policeman, and his
bride, the former Miss Diane Maytan of
Sayville, are at home in Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dyett of
Myrtle Lane were surprised at a party
given in honor of their 60th wedding
anniversary. The celebration was at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. George Neuhoff of
Swezey Street. Mr. and Mrs. Dyett have
one daughter, Evelyn. Along with the
many gifts they received were letters of
congratulations from President and Mrs.
Richard Nixon, Gov. Rockefeller and Rep.
Otis Pike.
Houseguests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Mahoney of Bieselin Road, Bellport,
for a few days this week were Mr. and
Mrs. James Mahoney and family of
Wilmington, N.C.
Last week Mr. and Mrs. Calvin
Demarest of Bieselin Road and Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Reid of New Paltz went for
a week’s cruise on a houseboat from
Fort Edwards, N.Y. to Chambly Basin,
Canada.
On Friday Mr. and Mrs. John Cummings
of Point Road attended a party hosted
by Guy Lombardo at the Jones Beach
Theatre, which initiated this season’s
presentation of “The Sound of Music.”
Mr. and Mrs. Chester Arthur of Bell
Street entertained at a barbecue Monday
night in celebration of their daughter,
Penny, who was 9 years old.
Douglas Warner Paige, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Peter Otis Paige of Meadowedge,
graduated from Lehigh University with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in international
relations. This summer he is working at
Southaven County Park. He is going to
Boston University graduate school in the
fall to study for his master’s in teaching
arts.
Mr. and Mrs. John Donald Langfeldt
of Bellport announce the engagement of
their daughter, Doreen Christine, to David
John Perugini, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip
Perugini of Ossining, N.Y. The wedding
will take place at Mary Immaculate R.C.
Church, Bellport, on Aug. 14.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schaefer of
Beaverbrook Drive, Brookhaven, recently
enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Schaefer’s
brother, Thomas Corwin. All had a great
time fishing and swimming. They also
went to Shelter Island. Mr. Corwin works
at Cape Kennedy, Fla.
A recent Fly-Up ceremony and Court
of Awards was held by Cadet Girl Scout
Troop 1291 of Blue Point-Bayport.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Clunan of
Atlantic Avenue, Blue Point, announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Catherine Marion, to Thomas K. Cochrane,
son of Mrs. Helen Cochrane of Arthur

Cochrane. Miss Clunan is attending
Suffolk County Community College,
Selden. Mr. Cochrane is in the employ of

and will return to Binghamton, N.Y. in

wedding anniversary July 7. Mr. Horst is
the chief of the Medford Fire Department.

After graduating July 9 from the U.S.
Army Hospital Specialized Treatment
Center, Fort Gordon, Ga., Private 1/c
Tyrone M. Hunter of Patchogue was
promoted to Specialist 4 and given a
15-day leave at home with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Hunter. On
Monday he will report to the Walter Reed
Army Hospital, Washington, D.C., where
he will serve as a clinical specialist.
Completing eight weeks of basic
training at the Army Training Center,
Armor, Fort Knox, Ky., Private Ralph A.
Lanese of Patchogue is awaiting further
assignment.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Enck of Jennings
Avenue traveled by plane to Roanoke,
Va., July 8 to attend the funeral of their
sister-in-law, Mrs. Lucilla Clowes Enck.
They were away one week.
Kevin A. McCarthy of Northridge Street
has been named to the Dean’s List for
the spring semester at Morehead State
University, Morehead, Ky.

spring quarter at the State University,

Point. Miss Carde is a June graduate of

at Chips Folly, near Atlantic City, N.J.

Bat Day at Yankee Stadium, with the
Yankees playing the Chicago White Sox
last Sunday. Richard Neumann was
lucky to catch a baseball hit by Horace

Miss Mary Ann Kenny of New York
City was the houseguest of Miss Diane
Simmons of Browns Lane, Bellport, last
weekend.
Edward Marinelli, son of Mr. and Mrs.

playing the part of Jiminy Cricket in
the production, “Snow White, Cinderella
Meet Batman and Robin in Disneyland,”
being shown at the Gateway Theatre, 11
a.m., this and next Friday and Saturday.
Cadet Thomas Trautwein, son of Mrs.
Catherine Trautwein of Price Street, has
just returned from a six-week cruise
in the Mediterranean. He attends New
York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler,
Bronx. His sister, Miss April Trautwein,
has just departed on a six-week tour of
Europe.
Gail Tooker, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Richard Tooker of Newey Lane,
Brookhaven, recently graduated from
State University at Oswego. Miss Tooker
is conducting nature study classes
and tours for all school-age children
at Quogue Wildlife Refuge during the
summer months.

Islands, is visiting his grandparents,

Greg Pilger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted
Pilger of Patchogue, left Sunday for
Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio,
Texas, for six weeks of basic training in
the Air National Guard. He will then be
reassigned to Chanute Air Force Base,
Ill., for further specialized training.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Presser of Lee
Avenue were celebrating their 54th
wedding anniversary as of Monday
on Saturday with their son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gibel,
and children, Geoffrey and Susan of
Riverhead. The couple’s other children,
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Reich and Mr.
and Mrs. Archie Buchsuherer, all of
Brooklyn, although not present, sent
remembrances and well wishes to their parents.
Mr. and Mrs. John Ernst of Hamilton
Street, Patchogue, announce the

Fort McClellan, Ala., recently graduated

from eight weeks of basic training.
Coast Guard Petty Officer 1/c Thomas
J. Reidy of Patchogue, aboard the highendurance
CG cutter Escanaba, homeported
in New Bedford, Mass., is serving
in the North Atlantic, midway between
Newfoundland and Ireland, for 30 days.
The cutter is acting as navigational
aid to ships and aircraft, carrying out
oceanographic and meteorological
observations and serving for rescue operations.

been named to the Dean’s List for the

Fil Ballin of Academy Lane, Bellport,
played in the Westchester Classic First
Hole Tournament recently and was
sponsored by the Seagram Distilling
Company, for whom he works as a
distributor salesman in the products
division. Mr. Ballin, rehashing the
difficulties of the course, said, “I missed
a hole in one by three strokes.”
Kathy Butler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Butler of Academy Lane, had as
houseguests seven friends of hers from
college. They all will be sophomores next
semester at the College of Mount St.
Vincent, Riverdale, Bronx.
In the International Windmill Sailing
races held off Bellport last weekend, Ken
Picken came in second, with Ed Laviano,
also of Bellport, coming in third. The
1968 national champion, Pat Hamilton,
added another title by winning first
place. There were 42 skippers competing.
Among other Bellport winners were:
Graham Campbell, seventh; John Everitt,
eighth; John Heidelberger, ninth.
Michael J. Florio, son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Florio of General McLean Drive,
has been accepted as a freshman student
at Palmer College of Chiropractic at
Davenport, Iowa. He will take a 4 1/3
academic year course of study leading
to the degree of Doctor of Chiropractic.
Mr. and Mrs. George B. Staples of
Country Club Road, Bellport, announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Peggy Jean, to David Allan Kulakowski,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kulakowski
of Station Road, Bellport. Miss Staples,
a graduate of Bellport High School, is
employed by the New York Telephone
Company. Mr. Kulakowski is a graduate
of the State University Agricultural and
Technical College in Farmingdale. He is
employed by the Suffolk County Parks
Department. No date has been set for the wedding.
Rocky Graziano, former boxing great,
visited the Bellport Golf Course, July 19.
While eating at the course restaurant,
he was introduced to Bellport’s women’s
golf champ, Emily Czaja. Rocky and
Emily proceeded to go for a round.
Standing within 2 feet of the entrance
to one of her garage doorways Tuesday
afternoon during the heavy rainstorm,
Mrs. Edwin Johanknect of Beaver Dam
Road, Brookhaven, had a narrow escape
from being struck by lightning when a
bolt plowed its way into the earth just
outside the doorway. Her sister, Miss
Marian B. Tuthill, was standing directly
behind her. Neither was injured, but they
were greatly shaken by their harrowing experience.

Marine Lance Corporal Edwin N. Ludwig
Jr. of Patchogue has reported for duty
with the First Marine Aircraft Wing at Iwakuni, Japan.
Gary P. Zaloga, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Leo Zaloga of Swan Lake Drive, Patchogue,
has been named to the Dean’s
List at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,
Troy, N.Y., for the spring semester. He is
majoring in the field of science.
Robert Goldstein, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harold B. Goldstein of Grove Avenue,
has been accepted as a member of the
freshman class at Clarkson College of
Technology, Potsdam, N.Y. He will major
in electrical engineering.
Newly wedded couple, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Todd III, were ready to receive
their guests at their wedding reception
following the marriage ceremony July
25 in St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church,
East Patchogue. Mr. Todd and his bride,
the former JoAnn Danowski of Patchogue,
will live in Patchogue, where both are employed.
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Terry of Maple Avenue,
Patchogue, have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Mary Jane,
to Arthur Martin, son of Joseph Martin of
Bayview Avenue, Bayport. Miss Terry,
a graduate of Patchogue High School,
received her B.S. degree in home economics
at Oneonta State University, N.Y.,
and her master’s from Queens College,
Flushing. She is employed in the Sachem
School District. Mr. Martin is employed
as a metal lather with Union Local 6, of
which he is an officer. A fall wedding is planned.
The Patchogue Forty Thieves Racing Team
took top honors in an old-fashioned firemen’s
tournament in Center Moriches
Sunday. Patchogue collected 21 points,
winning the tournament in the final
event of the day, the bucket, in the sparkling
time of 26.8 seconds. Patchogue
also won first place in the three-man
ladder and cart and hose. A total of 22
teams competed in the seven-event drill.
Entries from the local area included
North Patchogue, Hagerman, Bellport,
Center Moriches, Mastic, East Moriches,
Eastport, Manorville, Centereach, Medford,
Ridge and Rocky Point.
Army Private Orman C. Beach of Patchogue
recently completed eight weeks
of basic training at the Army Training
Center, Armor, Fort Knox, Ky.
Over 400 Patchoguers attended Shea
Stadium for Patchogue’s 10th annual
Night with the Mets last week. The Met
rooters assembled on Terry Street and
Taylor Lane for the arrival of many buses.
One bus included the winners of the
Father’s Day promotion, sponsored by
the Merchants Division of the Patchogue
Chamber of Commerce. The lucky winners
were hosted by Ed Mitchell, executive
director of the chamber.
Robert Temple and his two daughters,
Lisa and Christine, of Munsell Road,
East Patchogue, went to Shea Stadium
last Sunday to see the Mets-Houston game.
Claudine Marie, infant daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Swift of Evergreen Lane,
East Patchogue, was christened at Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, Patchogue,
July 24. The godparents were
Miss Jan Marie Gamaldi of Harrisburg, Pa.,
and George Gamaldi Jr., of East Patchogue.
A buffet supper was held for 125 relatives
and friends at their home following the ceremony.
Miss Jane Potter, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Harmon Potter of Rogers Avenue,
Bellport, early Saturday morning, in
company of two friends, Miss Debbie Lancaster
and Miss Nydia Barone, both of Bellport,
arrived home from Amsterdam,
Holland, after a month-long Youth Hostel
trip touring England, Denmark, France,
Belgium and Holland. Miss Potter is now
at Antioch Columbia College, Maryland,
where she is in her sophomore year,
consulting on her future studies in the
college’s work program.
Mr. and Mrs. William Swezey and daughter,
Robin, of Brookhaven, spent last
weekend camping at Smith Point Park.

Road spent three days last week cruising
the Great South Bay on a 17-foot sailboat.
The girls visited Sailors Haven and
Watch Hill. They slept on the boat and
cooked mostly in the rain. All three girls
are seniors at Bellport High School.
Richard Schonberg and son, Ricky, of
Beaverbrook Drive recently spent an evening
at Shea Stadium. Mr. Schonberg
was one of the winners of the Salute to Father’s Day.
Mr. and Mrs. George Horst of Robinson

party given for them at their home
this past Saturday evening by their children:
