Mrs. Elsie Heimroth of Patchogue,
whose poetry has often appeared in the
Long Island Advance, has published
her own book of original verse, entitled,
“Meditation.” Printed by the Adams
Press of Chicago, Ill., it contains 50 poems.
Recently, Mesdames Jessie Mathewson,
Paula Mathewson and Emilie
Ehmann of Patchogue, in company with
Mrs. Ellen Downey of Sayville, enjoyed a
vacation trip to Roxbury in the Catskills.
Mrs. Ehmann, during their stay there,
visited her brother, Archie Jones and
family, formerly of Patchogue.
Miss Lynn E. Southard, daughter of
the Rev. and Mrs. John E. Southard of
Old North Ocean Avenue, has graduated
from the Department of Nursing, Faculty
of Medicine of Columbia University,
in a late-summer presentation ceremony
at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical
Center in New York City.
Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Quinlan of
North Palm Beach, Fla., have been
spending the past week visiting Mr. and
Mrs. Albert H. “Toad” Conklin of Mulford Street.
The Carlino and Krause families of Patchogue
held their annual reunion picnic
Sunday at Corey Beach Park. Of the 65
members attending, brother Phil and
his wife Bernie traveled here from Baltimore,
Md., and brother Joe’s daughter
Janice was on leave from Fort Gordon,
Ga. Her guest, Capt. Gary Fishbien of
the Airborne Alabama National Guard,
presented the Krauses with a genuine
cotton tree in full bloom.
The wedding of Private 1/c and Mrs.
William Welsh took place Aug. 21 in
Emanuel Lutheran Church, Patchogue.
After greeting their guests at the home
of the bride’s parents on Bay Avenue,
Patchogue, the couple left for Quantico,
Va., where Pvt. Welsh is stationed with
the Marine Corps. His bride is the former
Miss Diane Anderson of Patchogue.
George Ulrich is the new head varsity
football coach at Patchogue High School.
He replaces Joe Agostinello, who was
coach for the past 12 seasons. Ulrich
joined the Patchogue-Medford School
system in 1957 as freshman baseball
coach and became varsity baseball coach
in 1965. He became freshman football
coach in 1959, a position he held for six
years, moving up to varsity for three
years as defensive coach. His assistant
coaches are Ed Wakim and Mike Ventura.
Two Navy petty officers, Petty Officer
2/c Brian F. Briscoe of Patchogue, and
Petty Officer 3/c William R. Simpson,
whose wife is the former Miss Kristine M.
Purdy of Patchogue, are participating in
the multi-nation training operation, Unitas
XII, off the coast of South America in
the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Officer
Briscoe is aboard the guided missile frigate
USS MacDonough. Officer Simpson
is serving aboard the destroyer escort
ship USS Edward McDonnell.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Williams of Bellport
returned last week from a trip to
Richard, Wash., and a motor trip from
Portland, Ore., to San Francisco, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. David John Perugini
paused for a photo after their wedding
ceremony Aug. 14 in Mary Immaculate
R.C. Church, Bellport. The bride, the
former Miss Doreen Christine Langfeldt
of Bellport, is a teacher of music.
The bridegroom is a graduate student
at Albany State College. The couple is
residing in New Paltz, N.Y.
Alan Sparrow, former Bellport High
School athletic standout and resident
of Bellport, is a member of the 1971
Brown University soccer team. Alan
co-captained the track team while at
Bellport High School and played basketball.
Brown Coach Cliff Stevenson predicts
that Sparrow will see much action
this season in an attempt to improve
upon his already successful two years of varsity play.
Dr. and Mrs. Paul Kindell and their
three children of East Lansing, Mich.,
were guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Lancaster
of Gerard Street. Mrs. Kindell is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster.
The two families took a cruise on the Lancasters’
boat, The Vita, to Block Island,
Watch Hill, R.I., Stonington, Conn., and
Shelter Island. They returned today.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Geiger of South
Country Road took their son this weekend
to enter Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Miss Myra Gelband of Brewster Lane
was awarded a B.A. degree with distinction
at the University of Rochester’s
commencement exercises in June.
Miss Erica Schaer, formerly of Mott
Lane, Brookhaven, was visiting last
week with Kim McKeown of Mott Lane.
Erica and her family now live in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Brookhaven Fire Department
marched in the Mastic firemen’s parade
Aug. 12 and took first place in Best
Appearing Equipment. On Aug. 22 they
marched in the Selden parade and took
first place for Most Unique Equipment (squirt).
William L. Knapp Jr., of Middle Road,
Blue Point, returned home last week
after a two-month stay in Europe. He
stayed for five weeks with a family in
Brussels and spent the rest of the time
touring Paris and many other Old World cities.

Miss Kathy Spaccarotella, the former
Miss Kathleen Thompson of Patchogue,
who has made a singing appearance at
the Bamboo Restaurant in Westhampton
Beach, will appear there again
tomorrow. A graduate of Patchogue
High School, where she played many
leading roles in the school’s musical
productions, she won a New York State
scholarship in competition in Albany.
She has also sung at Tojen’s Half Way House in Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Santangelo of
North Prospect Avenue, Patchogue,
were given a surprise party Saturday by
their children, honoring their upcoming
25th wedding anniversary.
Two local high school graduates,
Thomas Alan Frail, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Frail of Grove Avenue, and
Don Jay Katcoff, son of Dr. and Mrs.
Seymour Katcoff of North Prospect
Avenue, have enrolled in the freshman
class at Brandeis University, Waltham,
Mass., for the 1971-72 academic year.
United in marriage were Mr. and
Mrs. Eugene Thomas Baiardi July 31
in St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church,
Patchogue. The couple spent a few
days in New York City and then flew
to Bermuda for their wedding trip. Mr.
Baiardi and his bride, the former Miss
Patricia Ann McMullen of Patchogue, are living in Patchogue.
Bob Wittneben, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Wittneben of Mt. Vernon
Avenue, is a co-captain of the 1971
Central Connecticut varsity football
team. A middle linebacker, he has been
on the varsity for three years. While
at Patchogue High School, Wittneben
played football and was also a member
of the wrestling team. He was named to
the All-League team in his senior year
and was League II wrestling champion
in the 180-pound weight class.
Navy Fireman Terry E. Petrillo, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Petrillo of Fox
Croft Lane, Patchogue, has graduated
from Machinist Mate A School at the
Naval Training Center.
Miss Terri Felder of Taylor Avenue,
East Patchogue, a student at Bellport
Senior High School, has just returned
from a vacation in Nassau, the Bahamas.
She was accompanied by her brother-inlaw
and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cutting of Brooklyn.
New bridal couple is Mr. and Mrs.
DeWitt Smith Davies, whose wedding
day was Sept. 5. The ceremony took
place in the Sayville Congregational
Church. Mr. Davies, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Frederick Davies of Hewlett
Avenue, East Patchogue, and his bride,
the former Miss Nancy Lee Myers of
Bayport, are both employed at Stony Brook University.
Joseph F. Panarello of Third Street,
Bellport, was a May graduate of Dowling
College, Oakdale. He has accepted a
position of teaching secondary English
and drama coaching at Madison Central
School in Madison, N.Y.
Constantin G. Cotzias of Browns Lane
recently enrolled as a freshman at
Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pa.
Miss Elisabeth Williams and friend,
Miss Margaret Henry, of Brooklyn,
spent three days last week with Mr. and
Mrs. Clarke Williams of South Country
Road, and from there visited the Sunken Forest.
Mrs. Pearl Lentfer of Iowa and Mrs.
Dorothy Nelson of Florida have been
houseguests of Dr. and Mrs. Leigh Bell of
South Country Road. Both ladies came
to Bellport to be formally introduced
to their new granddaughter and recent
addition to the Bell family, Rozanne.
The Medford Fire Department
Marching Band won a trophy in the
parade at Rocky Point Saturday for one
of the best appearing musical marching
bands. The trophy was received by Miss
Alice Kennedy of Eagle Avenue. The
parade was the last of the season.
Richard Geyer III, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Geyer of Medford, was the guest of
honor at his first birthday party given in
his home recently. Twenty friends and
relatives were present, including his
grandparents from East Meadow.

Serving aboard the fast combat support
ship USS Camden is Navy Seaman
Apprentice James W.J. Fuoco of Suffolk
Avenue, Patchogue. The Camden has
been awarded the Pacific Force Battle
Efficiency “E” award for excellence
during the fiscal year 1971 and is homebased
at Long Beach, Calif.
Contracts were signed last week for
the purchase of two 1,250-gallon diesel
pumpers to be used by the Patchogue Fire
Department. At the signing were: Fire
Chief Vincent Felice; Patchogue Village
Mayor Robert T. Waldbauer; Karl Thuge,
representative of Mack Truck Inc.; John
Ferrante; First Battalion Chief Salvatore
Ferrante; Thomas Newham Sr. and Deputy
Chief Joseph B. Rhodes.
The smiles of Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Henning followed their wedding ceremony
recently, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C.
Church, Patchogue. The bride, the former
Miss Kathleen Russo of Patchogue, is
a registered physical therapist at St.
Charles Hospital, Port Jefferson. The
bridegroom is in the employ of the
Suffolk County Department of Public Works.
Mrs. Louis J. Walters of Falcon Avenue,
Patchogue, announces the engagement
of her daughter, Mary Lou, to John
Michael Giaccobe, son of Mr. and Mrs.
John V. Giaccobe of Lindenhurst. Miss
Walters is a 1970 graduate of Patchogue
High School and is employed by the New
York Telephone Company. Mr. Giaccobe,
a 1970 graduate of St. John’s University,
is a teacher in Babylon High School. The
wedding has been planned for March 26.
A fire in the Swan Bakery, South
Country Road, East Patchogue, which
apparently started back by the ovens,
was discovered at approximately
1:45 a.m. Tuesday. Approximately 45
volunteers from the fire department
fought the blaze, which was pretty well
confined to the ceiling. The building
is owned by Bob Busch of Swan Lake
Drive. The delicatessen and stationery
sections, owned by Tommy Wright and
Eddie Fezler, suffered smoke and water
damage. Ironically, although Busch
lives very close to the bakery and owns
the Robo Car Wash across on Montauk
Highway, he knew nothing of the fire
until someone told him while he was
opening the car wash at 6 a.m.

Miss Angela Nudo of Orchard Road, East
Patchogue, announces the engagement
of her sister, Dorene Nudo, RN, to James
Cacace, son of Mrs. Mildred Cacace of
East Patchogue, and the late Jess Cacace.
Miss Nudo, a 1967 graduate of Bellport
High School, is employed at Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital. Mr. Cacace is a 1965
graduate of Bellport High School and is
employed at the James Garage in Speonk.
The wedding will take place at St. Joseph
the Worker R.C. Church, East Patchogue, Dec. 5.
Mr. and Mrs. Matis L. Kalinowski
celebrated their 25th wedding
anniversary with an open house party at
their home on North Howells Point Road,
Bellport. Adding special enjoyment to
the celebration was a telephone call from
their son, Michael, at La Jes Air Force
Base, announcing the arrival of their new grandson.
Brownie Troop 1383 will have its
first meeting Wednesday, Sept. 29 from
3-4:30 p.m. in the Kreamer Street School
cafeteria. New troop leaders are Mrs. B.
Sands and Mrs. D. Cox.
The ferry to the new Bellport
Village Beach on Fire Island carried
approximately 6,000 persons to the beach
this summer and it is felt by the board
of trustees that this operation was a success.

radio operator recently assigned to the
brigade’s headquarters company.
Mr. and Mrs. Willard F. Goodwin of
Wilstan Avenue, Patchogue, announce
the engagement of their daughter, Carol
Jean, to Edward R. Gallagher, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Gallagher of West
Islip. Miss Goodwin is attending Suffolk
County Community College, Selden.
Mr. Gallagher is employed by the Long
Island Rail Road. No date has been set for
the wedding.
Peter A. Spina of Oak Street has been
appointed to the position of associate
dean of instruction of continuing
education at Suffolk County Community
College. Mr. Spina was formerly
administrative assistant to the president
and prior to that was a member of the
teaching faculty at the college.
Navy Petty Officer 3/c William R.
Simpson, whose wife is the former Miss
Kristine Purdy of Patchogue, participated
in one of naval tradition’s oldest and
most heralded rituals, when his ship,
the USS Edward McDonnell, crossed
the equator during a Western Pacific
deployment.
Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Mingino of
Woodacres Road, East Patchogue,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Patricia, to James Anthony
Fuoco, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony
Fuoco of Fuoco Street, East Patchogue.
Miss Mingino, a graduate of Bellport
High School, is employed with the
Surrogate’s Court in Riverhead. Mr.
Fuoco, also a Bellport High graduate,
is employed by the Louis A. Fuoco Bus
Lines. A January wedding is planned.
Happiness was reflected in the smiles
of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Jay Germain
on their wedding day. The couple knelt
at the altar of the United Methodist
Church of Bellport, Sept. 4, and received
their guests on the church lawn. The
bridegroom, whose wife is the former
Miss Bonnie Lee Brown of Bellport,
teaches in Minerva, N.Y., where they
will make their home.
Charlotte Minardi, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Minardi of Oak Lane, Blue
Point, has been named to the Dean’s List
at the State University of New York at
Brockport. She left on Sept. 12 to spend the
first semester of her senior year in Italy.
She will study at the University of Pisa
and expects to graduate from Brockport
in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in music
and elementary education.

Ben Tabatchnik, former principal of
the Medford Avenue School, Patchogue,
was welcomed at the first Parent Teacher
Association meeting of the River Avenue
School. Mr. Tabatchnik assumed his
duties as principal of River Avenue July
1. Approximately 250 parents attended
to hear their new principal, meet the
teachers and visit the classrooms.
A social hour was held at the end of
the program. Mrs. Michael Limoggio is
president of the River Avenue PTA.
Happy couple was Mr. and Mrs.
Anthony Melito, leaving Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel R.C. Church after their
recent wedding ceremony. They spent
their honeymoon in Cape Cod. Mrs.
Melito, the former Miss Barbara Seiler
of Patchogue, and her husband, both
graduates of Patchogue High School, are
making their home in Patchogue.
The Patchogue-Medford Board
of Education has been informed by
several members of the community
that a hamburger drive-in is now in
the process of construction on the west
side of Medford Avenue, across the
street from the elementary school. The
board of education has unanimously
declared its opposition to this particular
project to Brookhaven Town Supervisor
Charles W. Barraud by letter from board
president Alfred J. Chiuchiolo, citing
its concern for the health and safety
of children traveling to and from the
Medford Avenue School.
Two more landmarks will have
disappeared in the very near future,
when the wrecker’s axe hits a final
blow on the corner of West Main Street
and Waverly Avenue, Patchogue. One is
the two-story former West Patchogue
Firehouse and the other, a two-and-ahalf-
story frame building that originally
housed the Patchogue Congregational
Church. A large modern Chevron service
station will be erected on the site.
Among recent graduates of the
Barbizon School of Modeling are the
Misses Maureen Ackert of Medford and
Patti Lanese of Patchogue.
Army Specialist 4 John G. Iwachiw,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John Iwachiw of
Amsterdam Avenue, East Patchogue,
returned home Aug. 25 on a leave of
absence, after serving a tour of duty in
Vietnam. On Sept. 14 he left again on a
new assignment to Fort Campbell, Ky.
Two East Patchogue airmen, Roderick
C. Hawley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roderick
Hawley of Neptune Avenue, and
Christopher J. Garland Jr., son of Mrs.
M. Garland of Chapel Avenue, have
completed basic training at Lackland
AFB, Colo. Airman Hawley will train in
the supply field and Airman Garland in
the missile electrical field.
Last Saturday the Hearth Club of
Bellport went to New York by bus to see
the opera, “Madame Butterfly.” They
stayed in New York for dinner before
returning home. The committeemen for
this affair were Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Vollmer, Mr. and Mrs. Emery Van Horn
and Mr. and Mrs. Al Rand.

Chet Arthur and their wives attended
the International Association of Fire
Chiefs convention, which was held in
St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 19-23. They saw
many exhibits, attended meetings and
firematic demonstrations, which they
enjoyed, and which also was televised
down there.
Boy Scout Troop 28 started their 1971-
72 hiking and camping activities last
Saturday by hiking with a full pack from
Smith Point Bridge to Center Moriches
Inlet along the ocean side. They camped
out overnight in pup tents and cooked
their meals by patrols over open fires
before returning to Smith Point Sunday
afternoon. Swimming, surfcasting and
games were also part of the weekend
schedule. The participants were: Keith
Lockwood, Sam Wells, John Hulse and
Jeff Overton of the Senior Patrol; David
Kay, Earl Maddalena, Richard Foxwell and
Joe Richardson of the Beaver Patrol;
Spencer Snedecor, Brad Overton, Dean
Stonebridge, David Illg and Matthew and
Neil McKiernan of the Ram Patrol; Robert
Schneider, John Ramirez and Dwayne
Eleazer of the Buzzard Patrol; and Mike
Butler and James Reiss of the Explorers.
Miss Susan Reilly, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Reilly, is attending the
Fashion Institute of Technology in New
York City. Miss Reilly, who is majoring in
apparel design, is a graduate of Bellport
High School. She hopes to pursue a
career as a costume designer, and has
already been employed in this capacity
in 1970 by Gateway Playhouse, Bellport,
where she assisted during the summer
months. In 1971 she was the costume
designer for the Bellport HS production
of “Oliver.”
A winsome bride was Mrs. James
Douglas Orenkewicz, standing beside
her husband after their wedding Sept.
12 in the United Methodist Church of
Bellport. Mr. Orenkewicz and his bride,
the former Miss Joan Margaret Winters
of Brookhaven, spent four weeks touring
New York State before beginning their
new life together on North Howells Point
Road, Bellport. Both are graduates of
Bellport High School and Mr. Orenkewicz
is employed at Browns of Bellport.
