epartment held its annual Halloween
Parade recently for the children of the
community. Over 800 pumpkins were
distributed and those who did not receive
one were able to pick them up at the
Village Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Willis Eichel of Shore
Road, Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Bette,
to Robert H. Cornell Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert H. Cornell Sr., of Patchogue.
Miss Eichel is a graduate of Patchogue
High School and is now a student at
Suffolk County Community College. She
is employed by Consolidated Advertising
Corporation. Mr. Cornell also graduated
from Patchogue High School and,
after attending Rochester Institute of
Technology for one year, is employed by
Swezey’s Department Store, Patchogue.
The newly engaged couple will further
their education at Rochester Institute of
Technology. A summer 1972 wedding is planned.
Star outfielder Roy White of the New
York Yankees was the guest speaker
at the 15th annual North Patchogue-
Medford Youth Athletic Club’s awards
dinner recently. Following his talk,
White signed autographs for any and all
youngsters present.
Participating in the game
“Concentration” at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow
on TV Channel 4 will be Mrs. Jan Pfeifle,
songstress wife of Lou Pfeifle, immediate
past president of Patchogue’s chamber
of commerce. Mr. and Mrs. Pfeifle are the
parents of three children.
Completing a six-month voyage to
the Mediterranean and the Atlantic,
Navy Petty Officer 3/c Alan T. Brock,
whose wife is the former Miss Karen
Carne of Patchogue, returned to
Quonset Point, R.I., aboard the aircraft
carrier USS Intrepid. He participated
in NATO exercises, crossed the Arctic
Circle four times, and visited ports in
Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Denmark,
Norway, England and Scotland.
Mr. and Mrs. George Seyfert of George
Court, Bellport, entertained their
parents over the weekend. Both sets of
parents are from Reading, Pa.
Brownie Troop No. 1383 had their
investiture service Nov. 3 at the Kreamer
Street School. New Brownies receiving
pins were: Gloria Belford, Audrey Brown,
Lorraine Cicalese, Annette Delmonte,
Angela Hamilton, Patricia Holt, Karen
Hunter, Lori Hupfer, Laurie Kohler, Celeste
Landis, Jennifer Lacks, Patrice Nenniger,
Doreen Tuzza and Elaine Warner. The
troop is under the leadership of Mrs.
Bonnie Sands and Mrs. Dot Cox.
Following the Eagle Award ceremony
for their son, Keith, Mr. and Mrs. John
Lockwood of General McLean Drive
held an open house and buffet dinner in
Keith’s honor at his home Oct. 31. About
50 relatives and guests attended.
Charles Shellabarger, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Claire Shellabarger of South
Country Road, was home for the weekend.
He is a freshman at Drew University in New Jersey.
On Saturday, Nov. 6, on the 14th hole
at the Bellport Golf Club, Bellport
Mayor Harry F. Bedell made a hole in
one with a drive of 146 yards. Whistles
blew, horns tooted and people yelled. All
unperturbed, the mayor doffed his cap,
smiled and said, “I always knew I could.”
Edith M. Forsyth, M.D., announces the
opening of an office on South Country
Road, Brookhaven, for general practice.
Dr. Forsyth came to the United States
from England in 1960 and has been
associated with Brookhaven National
Laboratory and Suffolk County
Department of Health.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick W. Bone of
Port Jefferson have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Patricia
Ann, to David Hassell, son of Mr. and
Mrs. E. Floyd Hassell of George Court,
Bellport. Miss Bone is a 1968 graduate
of Port Jefferson High School and is
in the nursing field. Mr. Hassell is a
1963 graduate of Bellport High School
and has attended Suffolk Community
College and the University of Miami
and is at present with the National Cash
Register Company. A January wedding is planned.
Frank Trotta, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Trotta of Woodland Park Road, spent this
past weekend at home with his parents.
Recently announced by Gen. Strong was
Frank’s promotion from sergeant to
lieutenant in his senior year at Valley
Forge Military Academy, Wayne, Pa.
Three of the Watson boys of Beaver
Dam Road, Brookhaven, and their
father, Friday night attended the opera,
“Coquor” in New York. While in the city
they had dinner at Manganaros Hero
Boy Restaurant.

The new Patchogue-Medford High
School, located on Buffalo Avenue in
Medford, will be dedicated on Sunday at
3 p.m. An open house will precede the
ceremony beginning at noon, where the
community has been invited to visit the
new school. Sixteen hundred teenagers
now attend the school.
Miss Millicent Johnson of Waverly
Avenue, Patchogue, was given a surprise
bridal shower Sunday at Dave’s Welcome
Inn in Ridge. Some 40 guests attended
and a buffet was served. Miss Johnson
will become the bride of Jon Lundberg of
Port Jefferson Nov. 28 at Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel R.C. Church, Patchogue.
Santa Claus and his big parade are
scheduled to appear in Patchogue the
evening of Nov. 27. The chamber of
commerce guarantees snow.
Miss Mary Dew, a retired schoolteacher
from the Patchogue school system, visited
the third grade at the Canaan School as
part of the American Education Week
program. During her visit, Miss Dew
described what schools were like over
40 years ago, when she first started
teaching. The children were very
interested to learn there was no radio or
television and the classroom furniture
and the size of the classrooms were very
different from today. Miss Dew showed
the children books that were used at that
time, the old-fashioned straight pen and
a school bell, which was used to call the
children in from recess or to announce
the beginning of a school day.
Happily married are Mr. and Mrs.
Steven Lehmann, whose ceremony
took place in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
R.C. Church, Patchogue, Oct. 9. Both
Mr. Lehmann and his bride, the former
Miss Debbie Ortiz of Patchogue, attended
Patchogue High School. The bride is a
pupil at Patchogue Beauty School. The
bridegroom is employed as a bay carter.
They reside on River Avenue, Patchogue.
Nolan’s is the new Village of Patchogue
Recreation Department’s Men’s Touch
Football league champion, clinching the
title on the last day of the season, with
a surprisingly easy 38-8 win over Salty
Dog. Gary Rooney threw for five scores,
three to Tom Collins and the other two to
Al Costello.
Navy Petty Officer 3/c Peter T. Figat
Jr., of Washington Avenue, Patchogue,
is temporarily stationed at Cubi Point,
Republic of the Philippines, with Patrol
Squadron 19. He will return to home
base, Moffett Field, Calif., in May.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Skelaney of
South Summit Avenue, Patchogue,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Theresa Camille, to Thomas P.
Rowland Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
P. Rowland of Hewlett Avenue, East
Patchogue. Miss Skelaney graduated
from Patchogue High School this past
June. She is now employed with the
law firm of Bauer, Rogers and Esteve
of Patchogue. Mr. Rowland is also a
Patchogue High School graduate, class
of 1969. He is in the employ of Bump’s
Auto in Patchogue. A May wedding is
planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Leverett Hulse Sr., of
East Patchogue were given a surprise
dinner party by their children at Tojen’s
Restaurant Saturday, in celebration
of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Thirty friends and relatives attended
the celebration. Mr. and Mrs. Hulse’s
children are their daughter, Miss Rose
Hulse, their sons and daughters-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Hulse and Mr. and
Mrs. Leverett Hulse Jr., and their sons-inlaw
and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Chamier, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Nesbitt
and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stepnoski.
Larry Potter, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harmon Potter of Rogers Avenue,
Bellport, returned home last week
after spending a year in England at the
University of London. Larry received
his master’s degree at the School of
Oriental and African Studies. His sister,
Jane, is expected home in a few days
for the Thanksgiving holiday. Jane is in
her second year at Antioch-Columbia in
Maryland.
A combined birthday party was
celebrated Sunday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur Damask of Brewster
Lane in honor of their sons, John Burr
Damask, who was 3 years old, and Jay
Northrop Damask, who was 4.
Celebrating their 25th wedding
anniversary with a seven-day cruise
to the Bahamas on the Oceanic were
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Fuoco of Champlin
Avenue. Joining them on the cruise were
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cardamone Sr., of
Bellport, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stephani,
Mr. and Mrs. Dominick Satornino and
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Stephani, all of
East Patchogue. On their arrival home
last Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Fuoco were
pleasantly surprised with another party
at their home honoring their anniversary.

Kathy Spaccarotella, a former resident
of Patchogue who sings under the name
Kathy Tella, has been invited by the
proprietor, Gil Hodges, to appear Dec. 8
at his club, the Grand Slam in Brooklyn.
Donald A. Aviano, graduate of
Patchogue High School Class of 1971, is
now attending Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute as a member of their 50-student
Special Six-Year Medical School Honors
Program. Rensselaer and Albany Medical
College awarded Don a scholarship to
their special program, in view of his
outstanding scholastic achievements
while attending Patchogue High School.
He was voted “Most Likely to Succeed”
in his graduating class.
Miss Winifred Dempsey, of Andreano
Drive, Patchogue, was recently elected
Homecoming representative for the
freshman class at Seton Hall High
School in Patchogue. Miss Dempsey was
escorted by Timothy McMahon onto the
field, where she was presented with a
corsage. She is also co-captain of the
freshman cheerleading squad.
The engagement of Miss Marilyn A.
Wood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
R. Wood of Patchogue, to Fred M. Lang
Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Lang of
Blue Point, has been announced. Miss
Wood graduated from Patchogue High
School. She is employed at Island State
Bank. Mr. Lang is a graduate of James
Wilson Young High School, Bayport. He
is with the U.S. Coast Guard. No wedding
date has been set. Mr. and Mrs. Donald
R. Wood also announce the engagement
of their daughter, Sally, to William Frank
Arthur, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Arthur
of Patchogue. Miss Wood is a graduate of
Patchogue High School and is employed
at Fina Dance Wear. Mr. Arthur, a
graduate of Brentwood High School, is
serving with the U.S. Army in Georgia. A
January wedding is planned.
Patchogue’s offense was not a potent
one in last Saturday’s League II game
at the Saxton Street Middle School field
against West Babylon. One of the few
bright spots for Patchogue fans was
when Tom Ragazzi carried the ball. On
one play he picked up 9 yards with the
help of Mike Lukert. Final score was
30-0 in favor of West Babylon, as the Red
Raiders ended the 1971 season with a 0-7-
1 record. Following the game, Ragazzi
was named by the Varsity Club as the
team’s most valuable player.
Marine Private Robert J. Haack, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Haack of Truberg
Avenue, Patchogue, is aboard a ship of
the U.S. Fleet, operating in the Western
Pacific. He is a member of the Third
Marine Division’s Battalion Landing Team 2-4.
Navy Petty Officer 3/c Fred L. Pellerito,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Pellerito
of Maple Avenue, Patchogue, has been
graduated from the Naval Submarine
School at the submarine base, Groton,
Conn. He is now qualified for duty in submarines.
A lovely bridal pose was held by Mr.
and Mrs. Kevin Kelly on the grounds of
Mary Immaculate R.C. Church, Bellport,
where they were married recently.
Theirs was a garden reception for 100
guests and their wedding trip was to
Mount Airy Lodge in the Poconos. Mr.
Kelly and his bride, the former Miss
Kathy Bonner of Yaphank, are residing
on Yaphank Avenue in Brookhaven. The
bridegroom is in the employ of the South
Bay Trucking Company.
Lynn Stonebridge, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Donald Stonebridge of General
McLean Drive, Bellport, celebrated her
9th birthday last week with a dinner
party and swimming at the Lab pool with
some of her friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rueger and
family, along with Mrs. Rueger’s mother,
recently moved to Academy Lane.
The Ruegers are former residents of
Brookhaven and have bought the house
previously owned by Mr. and Mrs. Worth Austin Jr.
Last week George Mistler of Woodland
Park Road returned home from a
hunting trip upstate with John Barzak
of Yaphank. They stayed at the home
of Mrs. Robert Strier, Mr. Mistler’s
daughter, in Guilford, N.Y.
Janet Gardner, daughter of Mrs. Jane
Gardner of George Court, is on the
Dean’s List at Northeastern University
in Boston, where she is a senior. Mrs.
Gardner’s other daughter, Jean, will be
home for Thanksgiving from Boston
University, where she is in her second year.
A surprise dinner party was held at
the Pine Grove Inn for Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Perino Sr., of Station Road in honor
of their 48th wedding anniversary and
both of their birthdays.
Mr. and Mrs. E. Floyd Hassel of
George Court, Bellport, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Gene
Cornelia, to Jeffrey Vaughan, son of
Mr. and Mrs. James L. Vaughan of
North Howells Point Road, Bellport.
Miss Hassell and Mr. Vaughan are
1970 graduates of Bellport High School
and are attending Suffolk Community
College, Selden. No date has been set for the wedding.
Army Private Dennis K. Day, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Day of South Country
Road, Brookhaven, recently completed
an eight-week administration and
personnel management course at Fort Polk, La.

The rear of the sales office at the Swan
River Nursery on Montauk Highway,
Patchogue, was a total loss following
a fire, which broke out shortly after 3
a.m. Monday. A total of 49 volunteer
firefighters and six pieces of apparatus
from the North Patchogue Fire
Department were on the scene and the
blaze was declared under control at 5:13
a.m. Chief Robert Todd said the fire was
“really charged when we got there” and
believed the blaze started in a storage
area right behind the sales office.
The top students at Patchogue-Medford
High School and their respective classes
for the first marking period were: Joseph
Meo, 12th grade, 94 average; Stephanie
Krasowski, grade 11, 97 average; and
Francine Tuerk and Seth Madell, grade
10, 96 average.
Patchogue’s wrestling team will open
its season against Bellport Dec. 15 in a
non-league contest. Coach Ray Fell has
expressed his desire to improve on last
year’s record of 2-14 with an experienced
team. Returning to the mats this year will
be Jim Hawley, Mike Davis, Bob Hamm,
Steve Wittneben and Roy Reyling, plus
top sophomore prospects Tom Stalworthy
and Kevin Roth.
Bob Wittneben, a senior linebacker
from Patchogue, recently closed out a
brilliant career at Central Connecticut.
Thanks to his efforts at middle
linebacker, Central Connecticut finished
with a 7-3 record for 1971. Wittneben, a
1967 graduate of Patchogue High School,
was also a co-captain on the team.
Happily married are Staff Sergeant
and Mrs. George D. Owens after their
marriage ceremony Oct. 30 in the United
Methodist Church of Bellport. Home for
the sergeant and his bride, the former
Miss Susan Roberta Spencer of Bellport,
is Arlington, Va., since he is stationed at
the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., serving
with the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Meyer and
children of Piscataway, N.J., spent
Thanksgiving with Mrs. Meyer’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. John Ince of Browns Lane,
Bellport. They also were here to visit
with Mrs. Meyer’s brother, Dean, who
left Tuesday to return to New Olm,
Germany, after a 30-day leave.
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Athanasiou of
General McLean Drive visited their
son and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Robert
Athanasiou in Towson, Md., over the
Thanksgiving weekend.
Madge Green of Maple Avenue spent
last week in Bozman, Md. She was
accompanied by Mrs. Barbara Keck,
formerly of Bellport and who now lives in Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Axtmann of
Maple Avenue entertained the Theodore
Everitt family, Jack Stewart and Mrs.
George Elder for Thanksgiving.
Navy Ensign M. Arthur Johnson,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Johnson
of Country Club Road, Bellport, was
commissioned in his present rank upon
graduation from Naval Officer Candidate
School at Newport, R.I.
The large front window pane was
shattered and two television sets stolen
early Monday morning from Peter
Grucci’s television store at 120 Main
Street, Bellport. Grucci said that damages
to the window and merchandise, plus the
theft of the color and portable television
sets, totaled more than $1,000.
Army Specialist 4 James R. Trazzare,
son of Mrs. Ruth Trazzare of Provost
Avenue, Bellport, was recently assigned
to the Second Armored Division at Fort
Hood, Texas. He is serving with the Infantry.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maggio of Beaver
Brook Drive, Brookhaven, attended a
wedding in Peterborough, N.H., over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Jan K. Oosting and
family of Old Stump Road visited in
Poughkeepsie, for a Thanksgiving
dinner with a group of traditional folk
musicians from the East coast. They
enjoyed a two-day feast and jam session
there and then went on to Storrs, Conn.,
to spend the rest of the holiday with friends.
Winston Clark and Debra Tuthill,
seniors at James Wilson Young High
School, Bayport, have been selected by
the faculty as students of the month.

in Needle Park”; at the Plaza Theatre:
“Man in the Wilderness,” and at the
