Snowy Beach, an exercise battling
winter, the sea and the “enemy,” is being
experienced off the Maine coast by Navy
Petty Officer 3/c Gerard J. Manning, son
of Mrs. Dorothy Manning of Northridge
Street, Patchogue, aboard the destroyer
USS Damato.
Mr. and Mrs. John Asimake of
Farmingville announce the engagement
of their daughter, Zoe, to David Maichael
Luchsinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. John F.
Luchsinger of Patchogue. Miss Asimake
is attending Sachem High School,
Lake Ronkonkoma. Her father is in the
construction business. Mr. Luchsinger
formerly attended Syracuse University
and is now majoring in music at Suffolk
County Community College. His father
is chairman of the Brookhaven Town
Planning Board and vice president of
Swezey’s Department Stores.
Adorable bride was Mrs. Norman
Stuart Shaffer, who, with her husband,
was ready to receive guests after their
wedding ceremony Dec. 18 in the St.
Regis Sheraton Hotel in New York City.
Having spent their wedding trip in
Mexico, Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer will reside
in Manhattan. Bride, the former Miss
Arline Newman Davidow of Patchogue,
is working toward her M.A. degree at
Columbia University.
The Brookhaven Democratic Party
Tuesday night unanimously elected
Patchogue resident Bert R. Friedman,
a party co-leader in Patchogue, as the
new town leader. Friedman is general
manager of the Suffolk County Paper
Company in Medford.
Boy Scout Troop 128 of East Patchogue
spent the weekend participating in the
annual Polar Bear Camping Weekend. The
campout, which was held at Blydenburgh
Park, Smithtown, was attended by 30
boys. The troop was accompanied by
George Burge, scoutmaster. The following
fathers camped out with the boys: Ray
Willis, Julian Mellis, Charles Scanlon,
William Rickert, George McDonald,
Charles Hawkins and Robert Auer.
Mr. and Mrs. John Lancaster of Gerard
Street, Bellport, were chairmen for the
month of January for the Hearth Club
Folly. The Hearth Club met last Sunday
at the Methodist Church. The members
of the committee were: Mr. and Mrs.
Wallace Budny, Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Ebersole, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Fuller,
Mr. and Mrs. John Ince and Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Wood.
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Athanasiou
of General McLean Drive, Bellport,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Denise, to Clyde Wain Lea, son
of Mrs. Louise Lea of Jackson, Miss. Miss
Athanasiou is a 1970 graduate of Bellport
High School and attended Brandywine
Junior College, Wilmington, Del. Mr.
Lea graduated from Millsaps College,
Jackson, Miss., and is attending New York
State University in New York City. A June
wedding is planned.
Richard Watson and son, Gavin, of
Beaver Dam Road, Brookhaven, recently
spent the day in New York City. They
attended the opera, “La Forza de
Destino,” at Lincoln Center. They ate at
Manganaro’s.
Frank Craven, chairman of the board of
fire commissioners, administered the oath
of office to the officers of the Brookhaven
Fire Department installed in ceremonies
at Felice’s of Patchogue last Saturday.
Officers installed were: Murray Fink, chief;
James Verni, first assistant chief; Ronald
Kinsella, second assistant chief; Frank
Martin, captain; Terry Hooper, lieutenant;
Victor Lagatolla, captain of fire police,
and the Rev. Richard Gray, chaplain. All
except Lagatolla were reelected to their
position in the department.
Recruit training has been completed by
Navyman George N. Staudt of Division
Avenue, Blue Point, at the Naval Training
Center, Great Lakes, Ill. He is scheduled
to report to the Naval Training Center in
Great Lakes.
Soldier of the Month is Army Pvt. 1/c
Walter J. Planz, son of Mrs. Dorothy Planz
of Cypress Drive, Mastic Beach. He is a
security guard, serving with the Eleventh
Military Police Force at Camp Ames,
Korea.

Feb 10
Fred Syrett of Jayne Avenue,
Patchogue, and for 46 years with the
New York Telephone Company, was
honored at a dinner Jan. 28 at La Grange
Inn, West Islip. He will retire officially
March 31. Approximately 200 attended
the dinner and Mr. Syrett received a set
of matched golf clubs and bag.
An invitation has been extended by the
Medford Avenue School PTA for all boys,
their dads, brothers and cousins, to join
Emerson Boozer, running back for the
NY Jets, on Boys’ Night, 7:30 p.m. today
in the school gymnasium. A film will
be shown and Emerson Boozer will give
autographs.
Miss Michele Davidow, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Sanford Davidow of Shore Road,
a senior at Beaver College, Philadelphia,
Pa., is spending the spring semester
studying at the Austro-American
Institute in Vienna, Austria, under the
Beaver, Franklin and Marshall program.
She is a history and government major.
Miss Maureen Linehan of Jayne Avenue
is one of 120 December graduates at
Valparaiso University, Ind. A recognition
service was held for them Dec. 20 in
the university’s chapel and they will be
honored at official ceremonies in May.
Miss Linehan majored in theology.
Women’s rights have just found
another champion in the State Assembly.
Assemblyman Peter J. Costigan last week
introduced a bill that seeks to change
the male-oriented titles of town board
members to include designations for
women members as well. Costigan’s bill
would add to the titles, “councilwoman”
and “councilwomen.”
Patchogue’s wrestling team gained
one of its finest victories of the year
last Wednesday as they defeated
Southampton, 38-14. The Raiders had
three victories by virtue of pins. Reid
Godbolt pinned his opponent at 2:42 of
the second period, Steve Wittneben at
4:36 of the third period, and freshman
Mike Morellino at 1:34 of the first period.
Other winners for Patchogue were Fred
Dohn, Bob Hamm, Art Greishammer and
Mike Davis. The Raiders’ overall record
now stands at 3-9.
Twenty-five guests attended a baby
shower for Mrs. Carol Carpenter of East
Patchogue Feb. 4. It was given by Mrs.
Betty Gillette and Mrs. Mabel Jurgens at
the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Jurgens of Blue Point Avenue,
Blue Point. It is an expected second baby
for the Carpenters and is due at the end
of this month.
Miss Kathy Flynn of Division Avenue
celebrated her 12th birthday Feb. 3 with
a bowling party at the Oakdale Lanes.
Her guests were Bonnie Quigley, Dona
Santini, Laura Kryston, Ann Toriano and
Kelly Stosoc.
Last Thursday Kevin Fox celebrated
his 8th birthday with his family. Kevin is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fox of Pine
Street, Brookhaven.
Miss Mary Olafsen, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Olafsen of Greenport
Avenue, Medford, celebrated her third
birthday this past Monday. Her family
and relatives were on hand to enjoy
the occasion, including her two sisters,
Susan and Ellen.

Miss Carol A. Hartmann, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hartmann
of Roslyn Court, Patchogue, has been
named to the Dean’s List for the fall
semester at the State University of New
York, Agricultural and Technical College
at Cobleskill, N.Y. Miss Hartmann is a
senior majoring in nursery education.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thompson Sr., of
Shaber Road, announce the birth of their
fifth grandchild, Michael John, born Feb.
3 to Patrolman Charles Thompson Jr., of
the Fifth Precinct and his wife, the former
Miss Ann Marie Abarno of Patchogue.
Patrolman and Mrs. Thompson have two
other children, Thomas, 4, and Lori, 3.
Air Force Sgt. John E. Gifford, whose
wife, Lucille, is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Carmine D’Aniello of Patchogue,
received the Airman’s Medal at Ellsworth
AFB, S.D., for heroism involving
voluntary risk of life in the saving of
a drowning man in Pactola Lake, near
Rapid City, S.D. After three dives in 15
feet of water, he located the unconscious
man, pulled him to shore and revived him
by artificial respiration.
Mr. and Mrs. Bronislav Bilaszewski of
Wilmington, Del., have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Irene, to
James R. Nowicki, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Nowicki of Gillette Avenue,
Patchogue. Miss Bilaszewski is attending
Notre Dame College, Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Nowicki, a graduate of Seton Hall
High School, is attending Loyola College,
Baltimore, Md. Both will graduate in the
spring. A July wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. George L. Conklin,
former Patchogue residents, now of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., observed their golden
wedding anniversary Friday. Married in
Patchogue in 1922, they moved to Florida
about a year ago, after Mr. Conklin’s
retirement after a long career as a
landscape gardener.
Celebrating their 25th wedding
anniversary were Mr. and Mrs. George
Fiebe of John Street, Patchogue, during
a cruise aboard the Home Line’s luxury
flagship SS Oceanic, sailing from New
York Harbor Jan. 15. They returned
home Jan. 19, having visited the ports of
the West Indies and the Bahamas.
Airman 1/c Kenneth Goll, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Gene Goll of Medford Avenue,
Patchogue, has been promoted to the
grade of sergeant. He is currently
assigned to the Thirty-Seventh Aerospace
Rescue and Recovery Squadron at Da
Nang AFB, Vietnam. He is a jet engine
specialist on the HH 53 helicopter.
Thomas Love was guest of honor at
a birthday party Sunday given by his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Love of
Academy Lane, Bellport.
A big name in movie circles right now
is Gene Hackman. Perhaps many local
residents do not know he got his start
right here in Bellport at the Gateway
Playhouse in 1957. “It was great fun,” he
said. “Of course I was a little older than
the other apprentices, having spent five
years in the Marines, but I did just what
everyone else had to do. As a summer
stock company, we had to build sets, work
the box office, sweep up and act on stage.”
Also working alongside Hackman then
were Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Spata of
Cedar Street, Bellport, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Lillian, to
Dan Kosin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester
Kosin of Howard Beach. Miss Spata
is a graduate of Bellport High School
and Nancy Taylor Secretarial School
in Manhattan. Mr. Kosin is attending
Richmond College in Staten Island at
night. Both are employed by the New
York Telephone Company in Manhattan.
A September wedding is planned.
Miss Doris Ann Brennan, daughter of
Mrs. Catherine Brennan of Wave Avenue,
Medford, has been voted president of
the college union at New York State
University, Oneonta. Majoring in speech,
she has also served as chairman of
the Cultural Society. A 1969 graduate
of Patchogue High School, Miss
Brennan spent a year at Suffolk County
Community College, Selden, prior to
entering Oneonta.

Bruce Hodkin, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Donald Hodkin of Monroe Avenue,
Patchogue, has been accepted at Grahm
Junior College, Boston, Mass. He will
be enrolled in the liberal arts program,
leading to the Associate in Science degree.
Specialist 6 Robert Thompson of
Shaber Road recently received his
honorable discharge from the U.S.
Army, after having served seven years,
the last two in Long Binh, Vietnam.
He is now in the employ of a private
investigation company in connection
with a government project.
Peter Edward Fleury and Thomas
William Fleury, sons of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward A. Fleury of Thorne Street, were
baptized during the Sunday morning
service at the Congregational Church of
Patchogue, by the Rev. Henry G. Wyman.
A family party was held later in the
Thorne Street home of Mr. and Mrs. Fleury.
Celebrating his 90th birthday Feb. 16
was William H. Jamieson with his wife
in their home on Rider Avenue. Friends
dropped in to wish him well during
the day, and at night he was host at a
dinner with his son, Robert Jamieson of
Shoreham, Don Moog of East Patchogue,
his son-in-law, Leon Smith, also of
Shoreham, and Arnold Gile of Patchogue.
A feature of the occasion was his reciting
from memory a long poem by Robert Service.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kahrs of
Patchogue announce the engagement of
their daughter, Grace E., to Machinist
Mate 3/c Martin W. Jahn of the U.S. Navy,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene McGinnis of
Falls City, Neb. Miss Kahrs is a senior at
Patchogue High School. M/M3 Jahn, a
1968 graduate of Falls City High School,
is serving aboard the USS Denebola and
will soon be out of the service. No date
has been set for the wedding.
A brief ceremony held last Friday at
the Patchogue-Medford H.S. gymnasium
honored the late William F. “Dutch”
Schuldt, who dedicated most of his adult
life toward the betterment of athletics
in Patchogue and served as athletic
director of the school from 1965 until
his death in February 1971. Mrs. Schuldt
was presented with a plaque, which
will hang permanently outside the new gymnasium.
Michael Gazzola, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Michael Gazzola of Bayview Avenue,
East Patchogue, was entered on the
Dean’s List with a 3.9 average for the fall
semester at Suffolk County Community
College. He is majoring in psychology/
sociology and is president of the Earth
Science Club. The 1968 Bellport High
School grad has served with the U.S. Air
Force communications service in the
Panama Canal Zone and is now with the
Reserves. He is employed as a teacher’s
aide in the Sachem School District and
as a salesman in the Patchogue Sport
Shop. He plans a career in elementary education.
Mrs. Ruth Strickland of Browns Lane,
Bellport, is spending a few days with
her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Lawrence Davis and their twin
daughters, Mary and Cindy of Telford, Pa.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Richardson Sr., of
North Howells Point Road, and their son,
Richard Richardson of Patchogue, spent
two days attending the funeral of Mr.
Richardson’s brother-in-law, Thomas
Hadder of Berlin, Md.
Marissa Dermer, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Dermer of South Howells
Point Road, celebrated her 4th birthday
Feb. 8 with a party given in her honor. To
help Marissa celebrate were her sister,
Madelin, with Robin and Gregg Geller,
Steven Lipson, Amy and Brett Robinson,
Christi Dell and Maria Grassi.
The exhibit of Linda McChesney’s
watercolors at Valley National Bank on
Station Road closed yesterday and an
exhibit of reproductions of the masters
has taken its place. All proceeds from
the sale of the paintings will go to the
Salvation Army.
