Mrs. Mary Recchio of Waverly Avenue,
Patchogue, in celebration of her 75th
birthday, was given a surprise party at
the home of her son-in-law and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swezey of Park
Street, Blue Point. Guests attending were
her friends, her sons and daughtersin-
law, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Recchio
and Mr. and Mrs. Dominick Recchio,
all of Patchogue, and her sons-in-law
and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Angelo
Mancuso of Patchogue and the hosting
Mr. and Mrs. Swezey. Also present were
nine of her grandchildren and a greatgrandchild.
Surprise feature of the party
was a telephone call from her grandson,
Charles Mancuso, from Concord College
in West Virginia.
Donald Anthony Aviano of Hallock
Road has been named to the Dean’s List
at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy,
N.Y., for the fall semester. He is majoring
in the field of biomed.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Giordano of
Amsterdam Avenue, East Patchogue,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Bernadette, to Michael Nolan,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nolan
of Howard Street, Patchogue. Miss
Giordano is in the employ of the South
Country Adult Home, East Patchogue.
Mr. Nolan is a junior at Dowling College, Oakdale.
Civil Disturbance is the course
which Marine Lance Corporal Joseph
Brisciano, son of Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore
Brisciano of Miller Street, Patchogue,
has completed at the Marine Barracks,
Quonset Point, R.I.
Airman Marc S. Heyman, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Leonard D. Heyman of Lincoln
Road, Patchogue, has been assigned to
Sheppard AFB, Texas, after completing
basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas.
He will train to become a medical helper.
The Patchogue Chamber of Commerce
celebrated its first Patchogue Night with
the New York Nets last Wednesday, when
two busloads of fans made the trip to
see the Nets play the Indiana Pacers at
the new Nassau Coliseum. Among those
attending were the happy winners of a
recent Merchants Division promotion
along with guests of their choice.
Miss Kathy Vignato of East Masem
Square, East Patchogue, and her cousin,
John Conklin of Patchogue, returned
home from a week’s vacation in Miami,
Fla. They were houseguests of Mr.
Conklin’s sister, Miss Bonnie Conklin.
Weekend houseguests of Mr. and Mrs.
Peter Rene of Maple Avenue, Bellport,
were Mrs. Rene’s nephew and his wife,
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Carducci of Jersey City.
Mr. and Mrs. William Sampson and
their children, Karen and Paul of
Bayview Street, have returned home
after spending 10 days in St. Thomas,
Virgin Islands.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas LeBrun of North
Howells Point Road have returned home
after a one-week trip to Florida. Visiting
many cities in Florida with them were
their children, Jackie, Susie and Richard.
Leaving the Ruth AME Zion Church,
Bellport, were Mr. and Mrs. Leonard
Cuffee after their recent wedding
ceremony. The bridegroom and his bride,
the former Miss Blanche Carolyn Carle of
Bellport, are residing on the Shinnecock
Reservation in Southampton. Mrs. Cuffee
is employed by the Suffolk County Health
Department. Mr. Cuffee is employed by
the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
The 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood,
Texas is the new assignment of Army
Private 1/c Juan F. Rodriguez, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Juan Rodriguez of Michigan
Avenue, Bellport. He is a field wireman.
Bellport’s basketball team participated
in the Suffolk County playoffs, which
got underway Tuesday night. However,
the Clippers were eliminated in the
first round by Walt Whitman, 63-57.
Team members are: John Young, Wayne
Blackett, Jamie Escarpeda, Dana George,
Vincent George, Bruce Lampe, Charles
Peek, John Bull, Bruce Williams, Tom
Palace, Dave DiDio, Ray Jackson and
Gary McLaurin. Coach is Earl Maddelena
and captains are Mike Capeler and Bob Klamut.

Miss Barbara Robertaccio, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Robertaccio of
Ketcham Avenue, Patchogue, graduated
with a Master of Science degree in
audiology from the Bill Wilkerson
Hearing and Speech Center of Vanderbilt
University of Nashville, Tenn., in
December. A 1966 graduate of Seton Hall
High School, she received her Bachelor of
Science degree from the School of Speech
of Marquette University, Milwaukee. She
currently is the audiologist at Mill Neck
Manor, Lutheran School for the Deaf at
Mill Neck.
Patchogue-Medford High School
students Jeffrey Jankowitz, Marian Byrne
and Joseph Meo have been selected
as winners of local “Most Valuable
Students” scholarships awarded by the
Patchogue chapter of the Elks Club.
John Pew Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Pew of Circle Drive East, has returned
from his mid-winter ski vacation at Vail,
Colo., where he was the winner of the
silver medal in the Master Ski races.
Waiting for him at home was notification
that he has been accepted at Dowling
College, Oakdale, for the fall semester.
Michael Mancuso, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Angelo Mancuso of Waverly Avenue, on
Feb. 18 celebrated his 18th birthday. On
that same day, his cousin, Larry Stadier,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Stadier of
Blue Point, celebrated his first birthday,
having been born not only on that day
but also at the same hour and at the same
hospital as Mr. Mancuso.
Charles Winans, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Winans of North Prospect
Avenue, has pledged Sigma Nu Fraternity
at Ashland College, Ashland, Ohio. He is
in his freshman year.
Miss Denise Marie Benincasa of
Patchogue has enrolled at the Katherine
Gibbs School in Huntington for the
one-year secretarial course, beginning
in September. The daughter of Mrs.
Rose Marie Menzel, Miss Benincasa is
a student at the Buffalo Avenue High
School.
The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Joseph Miehle Jr., took place recently
at our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church,
Patchogue. The bridegroom and his
bride, the former Miss Diane Theresa
Wessel of Patchogue, are both Patchogue
High School graduates. Mrs. Miehle is
employed at Patchogue-Medford High
School. Mr. Miehle is with Wess Plastics,
Farmingdale.
Gary P. Zaloga, Swan Lake Drive,
Patchogue, majoring in biochemistry,
and Edmund D. Loesch, Maple Street,
Blue Point, majoring in electrical
engineering, have appeared on the
Dean’s List at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute for the 1971 fall semester.
On duty at Royal Thai AFB, Thailand,
is Airman 1/c Franklin E. Fischer, son of
Mrs. Jeanette Fischer of Wheeler Court,
Patchogue. He is a supply specialist.
In Germany near Bad Kissingen, Army
Private Roy A. Stegemann, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Rudolph Stegemann of Swan View
Drive, Patchogue, was assigned to the
Fourteenth Armored Cavalry Regiment.
Joseph Backes Sr., and his son, Joseph
Jr., of Hedges Avenue, East Patchogue,
and Brian Keller of Scherger Avenue, East
Patchogue, went on the East Patchogue
Elementary School Father-Son trip to
see the Ducks vs. Clinton hockey game at
the Commack Arena Sunday.
A dance called the “Love-in” was held
March 3 sponsored by the sophomore
class of Bellport Senior High School.
Approximately 230 students and guests
attended, with music supplied by The
Parody Band. A dance contest was held
and the winners were Gail Miller and
Richard McLellan.
Mr. and Mrs. William Florio of General
McLean Drive, Bellport, announce their
son, Michael, a graduate of the State
University at Oswego, will continue his
studies at the University of Brussels
Belgium Medical School. He will depart
sometime in July. They have also received
word that their son, Tommy, was named
to the Dean’s List at High Point College,
North Carolina.
Weekend houseguests of Mr. and Mrs.
John Mehrman of North Brewster Lane
was Mrs. Mehrman’s sister and brotherin-
law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pritchard
and daughter Lorren of Irvington.
Teddy Travis, son of Mrs. Lisa Travis of
Provost Avenue, is home for 10 days from
Fredonia College, N.Y. He will return to
college March 15 to prepare for a trip to
Mobile, Ala., where he will compete with
the Fredonia Modern Jazz Ensemble
against other top jazz ensemble groups
in the country.
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Munson and
children, Scott, Mindy and Tim of
Bellport Lane, have returned home after
spending a week at Bonita Springs with
Mrs. Munson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard Scofield.

Seaman Apprentice David S. Alicea,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Alicea of
Bellport Avenue, Bellport. He received
his training at the Basic Radar School at
Great Lakes, Ill.

Robert Qualtere, son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Qualtere of South Pine Lake
Drive, Patchogue, has been accepted
for admission in September to the State
University Agricultural and Technical
College at Delhi, N.Y. He will study in the
Agriculture Division.
Miss Lynne A. Falkoff of Walnut Avenue
has been named to the Dean’s List for
the fall semester at the State University
College at Oneonta, N.Y.
A surprise baby shower was given Feb.
21 in honor of Mrs. Edward Maher Jr.,
of North Patchogue, by her sister, Mrs.
Gail McMahon, also of North Patchogue.
A buffet supper was served, followed
by coffee and cake, to the 27 guests in
attendance. Mrs. Maher, the former Miss
Arlene Schlefstein, was the recipient of many gifts.
Miss Linda Wicks, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Lewis C. Wicks of Walnut Avenue,
has been accepted at St. Luke’s Hospital
School of Nursing, New York City. Miss
Wicks will enter the school in September
and be a member of the class of 1975.
Currently Miss Wicks is a student at the
Buffalo Avenue High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold E. Tierney of
Terrell Street announce the engagement
of their daughter, Joan, to Glenn Richard
Diener, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius J.
Diener of Jayne Avenue, Patchogue. Miss
Tierney is a 1971 graduate of Patchogue
High School. Mr. Diener, a 1970 graduate
of Suffolk County Community College,
Selden, is enlisted in the U.S. Coast
Guard. A June wedding is planned.
The basketball intramural season
began recently for the girls at Patchogue-
Medford High School. A team was
selected by Mrs. Mary Ryan to represent
the high school in two invitational games.

Airman Gary J. Hunter, son of Mr.

D. Roosevelt, which is homeported at Mayport, Fla.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Champlin Sr.,
of Dunton Avenue, East Patchogue,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Charlotte, to James Schrage,
grandson of James Musso of East
Patchogue. Both Miss Champlin and Mr.
Schrage are seniors at Bellport High
School. No date has been set for the wedding.
Mrs. Michael DeVito, who is
representing the Hagerman’s Senior
Citizens, has won her second ribbon in
a bakeoff contest. She now holds a firstand
second-place ribbon.
Mrs. Frank Biscardi and Mrs. Fred
Wood of East Patchogue express their
appreciation to the children who worked
to help make the Southern Brookhaven
Heart Fund Ball on Feb. 12 a huge
success. They are Valerie Biscardi, Carol
Graniello, Lisa Guiliano, Michael Mingino,
Ann and Martin Palermo, Michael and
Scott Stephani, Robin, Ronny and
Stephen Wood, and Mike and Pam Wood.
Miss Maureen Fogarty, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. George Fogarty of Fuoco
Street, Bellport, is home on spring
vacation from Marshalls University in
Huntington, W.Va., where she is in her junior year.
Mr. and Mrs. John Lancaster of Gerard
Street and Mr. and Mrs. John Ince of
Browns Lane returned home Sunday
from a two-week trip to the Virgin
Islands. They spent one week at a cottage
on Tortola Island and the second week
sailing around the islands.
Louisa Toronto, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Michael V. Toronto of Champlain
Avenue, graduated from the State
University College, New Paltz, N.Y., Jan.
18. Miss Toronto received a Bachelor
of Arts degree in math, majoring in
elementary education.
Elaine Beitel of North Howells Point
Road has been awarded the baccalaureate
degree cum laude from the State
University of New York at Buffalo and
placed on a list of most distinguished
students at the university. As part of the
American studies program, she spent
five months on an Indian reservation
in Sacramento, Calif., living with the
Bear tribe, learning the culture and daily
habits of the American Indian.
Happy birthday wishes to Mr. Nelson
Briggs Jr. of Edgar Avenue, Brookhaven.
Mr. Briggs celebrated his birthday on
March 6 with his family.

Marine Lieutenant Corporal John Van
Kleef, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arie Van Kleef
of River Avenue, Patchogue, has been
meritoriously promoted to his present
rank while serving on Oahu, Hawaii.
Mrs. Robert T. Waldbauer planted a
big kiss on the cheek of her husband
after he was re-elected to his fifth term
as mayor of Patchogue Village Tuesday.
Mayor Waldbauer racked up the highest
total for his party, collecting 1,794 votes,
as the Democrats defeated Republican
and Conservative candidates for four positions.
Mr. and Mrs. Felix A. Tierney of Queens
Village have announced the engagement
of their daughter, Carolyn Marie, to David
M. Hildreth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
A. Hildreth of Patchogue. The future
bride is in her junior year at St. John’s
University. Her fiancé is a graduate of
Fort Schuyler Maritime College. No date
has been set for the wedding.
Patchogue-Medford High School
students Nancy Bacelli and Grace Drago
won trophies at the Suffolk Athletics for
Women in Physical Education in New
York State bowling tournament. Grace
took first-place honors in the senior
division with a 439 series and Nancy, 425
series, placed third. Patchogue-Medford
girls made an impressive showing with
Donna Meyer finishing fourth, Pam
Spasaro fifth, Pat Kronback seventh and Rachel
Russo tenth.Glenn Hunter, son of Mrs. Yvette
Hunter of Patchogue, has been accepted
for the fall semester at the University of
Southern California’s Graduate School
of Cinema. His studies will lead to a
master’s degree in films, his major being
in the field of directing.
Mr. and Mrs. Brian Hannon of Browns
Lane and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dallin
of Country Club Road, both Bellport,
have returned home from a two-week
vacation. They flew to San Juan and
there boarded the Italian cruise ship
Carla C. They stopped at the Caribbean
ports of Curacao, Caracas, Martinique,
Grenada and St. Thomas, returning to
San Juan before returning home.
Mrs. Grace Eleazer of New Jersey
Avenue was surprised at a party given
by her children in honor of her 84th
birthday. Many relatives and friends
helped her make it a gala event.
Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Potter and
children, Larry and Jane, of Rogers
Avenue recently returned from a sevenweek
car trip to Mexico. They visited
the archeological ruins near Oaxaca,
collected shells on the west coast of
Mexico for Larry’s collection and viewed
many other points of interest.
John M. Derby of Bieselin Road has been
accepted for admission in September to
the State University Agricultural and
Technical College at Delhi, N.Y., where he
will study in the business management
division. John plans to graduate from
Mercy High School this year. He is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Derby.
Mr. and Mrs. David E. Alburger and son,
Andy, of Beaver Dam Road, Brookhaven,
recently returned from a weekend in
Washington, D.C. While in Washington
they visited with Mr. Alburger’s mother,
Mrs. S.I. Regan, a former resident of
Brookhaven. They also visited many other friends.
Kelly Carll, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. William Carll of Meadow Lane,
celebrated her 3rd birthday with a
party given in her honor. To help Kelly
celebrate were Dawn Carll, Theresa
LaMonica, Chris Trigar, Audrey Bengel,
Christopher Drake, Krista Danishski and Billy Carll.
Mrs. Doris Dioquardo of Sylvan Avenue,
Bayport, announces the engagement of
her daughter, Patricia, to Michael Stahl,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Stahl of
Arthur Avenue, Blue Point. They are
both graduates of James Wilson Young
High School, Bayport. Miss Dioquardo is
a laboratory technician at Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital. Mr. Stahl is a student
at Salem College, Salem, W. Va. A June
wedding is planned.

and he has been training at Lackland
AFB, Texas. His new assignment is at
Chanute AFB, Ill., where he will become
an aircraft maintenance specialist.

Army Specialist 4 Michael E. Welsh,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick J. Welsh
of North Prospect Avenue, Patchogue,
recently participated in a four-day field
training exercise at Lake Illiamna in
Alaska. His detachment experienced
shoveling through four feet of snow
under extremely high winds to make a
base for the tent stakes and the Yukonstoves.
A PTA teacher fellowship for summer
graduate study grant of $500 has been
awarded to Richard J. Sweeney, a fourthgrade
teacher in Patchogue-Medford’s
Eagle Drive School. Mr. Sweeney has
received one of 21 fellowships that have
been awarded this year by the New York
State Congress of Parents and Teachers.
A 19-foot Thunderbird boat with
a 135-horsepower motor was stolen
sometime between Tuesday and
Thursday of last week from its parking
berth at the Seashore Marina, Blue
Point. Frederick Jones of River Avenue,
Patchogue, told Fifth Precinct police that
the boat and motor are valued at about $4,000.
The Modern Volunteer Army at
Fort Ord, Calif., has promoted Army
Private Timothy J. Mulligan, son of Mrs.
Josephine Berger of Potter Avenue,
Patchogue, after eight weeks of basic
training. He will complete eight more
weeks at the base, under the MVA, a new
concept called Volar, which combines
basic and advanced training in a single
16-week program.
Patchogue’s varsity trackmen took
on Hauppauge in the first meet of the
new season last Friday. The non-league
meet ended in a 94-40 defeat for the
Red Raiders. Three Raider performers
had first-place finishes: Larry Silverman
in the half-mile with a time of 2:11;
Jon Parris took the two-mile run with
a winning time of 10:52; and first-year
man Ron Cupani won the long jump at
17 feet, 6 inches. Second-place finishes
for Patchogue went to Mike Lento in the
100- and 220-yard sprints, Kim Welsh in
the pole vault, Ron Lum in the discus and
Jeff Eyde in the triple jump.
Robert DiDio, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Angelo DiDio of New Jersey Avenue,
Bellport, has been named in the volume,
“Outstanding Teenagers of America.”
He is president of the Bellport High
School Student Council, is active in all
sports and a member of the Key Club. He
works for the Zukowski Appliance store
in Brookhaven after school hours and on weekends.
Miss Audrey Snyder, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Peter Snyder Sr., has returned to
Oldfields School in Maryland to continue
her studies. Miss Barbara Snyder is home
for the weekend from Philadelphia.
Spending three weeks with Mr. and
Mrs. Richard Warburton of Bieselin Road
is their daughter, Mrs. Betty Fining and
her son, Brendan, of St. Louis, Mo.

Shultis and Den mother Dorothy Losee
from Cub Scout Pack 9 attended the Pow
Wow in Port Jefferson last Saturday.
A ninth-grade wrestling tournament
was held recently at Bellport Senior
High School. Winners were Ron Richert,
Rich Edwards, Mario Griffith, Greg Snead,
Mark Palermo, Dan Ferrier, Jeff Overton,
John Rand and Paul Neumann. Coach is Earl Maddalena.
Serving his second tour of duty in
Vietnam, CW2 Keith W. Brown of the
Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter R.
Brown of Bellport, is with the 48th
Assault Helicopter Company of Da Nang.
He is a helicopter pilot.
The William Floyd girls volleyball and
softball coach and the varsity football
coach were married last Saturday. The
bride is Miss Kay Shanks and the groom
is Frank Barton. The couple was married
at the Union Presbyterian Church in
Blasdell, N.Y. Members of the home
economics class of Miss Sue Daye held a
surprise bridal shower for the bride and
groom at the school. The students gave
the newlyweds an electric frying pan.
