At Memorial Day ceremonies
Monday in Patchogue, a new flag
pole was dedicated by Commander
Peter Pino and presented by the past
commanders of American Legion
Post 269, on the grounds of Memorial
Park, located at Baker Street and
South Ocean Avenue. It is 20 feet
high and is of steel construction. The
flag was secured by Adrian Mason of
East Patchogue, through courtesy
of Congressman Jack Brooks. It had
flown over the Capitol building.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Quenzer of
Washington Avenue, Patchogue,
attended the First Holy Communion of
their grandson, Robert, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Lawrence of Woodside, May 20.
Mr. and Mrs. Chester C. Platzer
of Sunapee, N.H., announce the
engagement of their daughter, Trudy
Anne, to Paul Lauben, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Phil Lauben of Oak Street,
Patchogue. Miss Platzer is a graduate
of Patchogue High School. She is
currently employed with Grand Dress
Company of Patchogue. Mr. Lauben is
self-employed at P & P Gulf Service of
Sunrise Highway, Patchogue. No date
has been set for the wedding.
Two local students of Patchogue,
George N. Ruland Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. George N. Ruland of North Ocean
Avenue, and Robert Harold Wittneben,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wittneben
of Mt. Vernon Avenue, graduated
Friday from Central Connecticut
State College, New Britain, Conn. Mr.
Ruland received a Bachelor of Arts in
biology, Mr. Wittneben, a B.S. degree
in physical education.
Patchogue is the only area baseball
team still left in the Suffolk County
playoffs. The Raiders advanced to
the quarterfinals yesterday with
a 3-2 come-from-behind win over
Center Moriches in the first round.
Dan Wasilewicz pitched a no-hitter for Patchogue.
David Landau, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Al Landau of Roslyn Court,
Patchogue, will receive a degree in
elementary education from American
International College, Springfield,
Mass, at commencement exercises June 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rene Sr., of
Maple Avenue, Bellport, celebrated
their 18th wedding anniversary with
a small party at their home. Helping
them to celebrate were their children,
Diana, Lynn, Joseph and Peter Jr., Mr.
and Mrs. Michael LaGrega, and Mr. and
Mrs. John Ahearn, all of Maple Avenue.
Returning home from a one-week
stay at Newstead in Bermuda were
Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Potter of Rogers
Avenue. While there they visited with
relatives and friends.
The Kreamer Street Elementary
School violin class performed at their
second recital for the entire student
body last Friday. The students taking
part in the program were Lisa Acree,
Jennifer Brown, Mary Lou Bono, Karen
Cardamone, Christine Dowd, Cheryl
Emma, Deborah Kusa, Esther Langer,
Darryl Martin, Deborah Poten, Susan
Orsinger, Dana Nardi, Philip Remsberg,
Jacki Robinson, Suzanne LeBrun,
Terry Schuman, Laura Werner and Lisa Temple.
A cooperative family barbecue was
held over the weekend at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Perino Jr., of Station Road.
Michael Klein, son of Robert Klein of
Country Club Road, has returned from
an 11-month tour of duty in Mannheim,
Germany. He was discharged from the Army April 30.
Miss Nancy Sailor of East Patchogue,
a student at Bellport High School, was
a first-prize winner in the 1972 Annual
Poetry Contest sponsored by the Walt
Whitman Federal Savings and Loan
Association. Her poem was awarded
first prize in the high school category
and she received a $50 U.S. Savings
Bond, as well as a copy of “Leaves of
Grass,” by Walt Whitman.

News of recent graduations: Miss Diane
Gerard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell
Gerard of Conklin Avenue, Patchogue,
received her B.A. degree Sunday at Rider
College, Trenton, N.J. She majored in
elementary education. Miss Pamela M.
Borzi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip
L. Borzi of Case Avenue, Patchogue, was
graduated May 20 from the College of St.
Rose in Albany, N.Y. She was awarded a
B.S. degree in education, with a minor
in biology. She plans to teach on the
elementary level. Jack Hartman, son
of Mrs. Mary Hartman of Washington
Avenue, Patchogue, graduated Saturday
from Concordia Senior College, Fort
Wayne, Ind., with a B.A. degree. He
plans to enter Concordia Seminary in St.
Louis, Mo., in the fall.
Miss Barbabra Wicks of Oak Street,
Patchogue, has been accepted into the
Green Key Honor Society at the State
University Agricultural and Technical
College at Delhi, N.Y. She is a senior in
the agriculture division.
Mrs. Mary Maniacci of Patchogue
has announced the engagement of her
daughter, Barbara, to John Lund, son
of Mrs. Florence Lund of Patchogue.
Both Miss Maniacci and Mr. Lund are
Patchogue High School graduates. Miss
Maniacci is a switchboard operator. Mr.
Lund is employed as a contract worker.
The wedding will take place March 24,
1973.
Exotic Dancer Five, a joint-service
amphibious assault training exercise,
was shared by Marine Corporal Robert
J. Haack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Haack
of Truberg Avenue, Patchogue, at Camp
LeJeune, N.C., and the waters offshore.
Pam and Jayme Backes of Hedges
Avenue East Patchogue, participated
recently in the Patricia Wakim Dance
Recital. They both received a trophy for
perfect attendance.
The South Country Lions Club
received this year’s Governor’s Award
for membership development and
retention. There are 69 Lions Clubs in
Suffolk County and each year one club’s
achievement stands out among the rest.
Officers of the South Country Lions are:
Frank Tortorella, president; Justin Spisto,
first vice president; Jack Gazzola, second
vice president; Bill Gazzola, secretary;
Frank Aragona, treasurer; Richard Reib,
lion tamer; Gene Garruppo, tail twister,
and Bill Linsalato, zone chairman.
Spending several days with Mr. and
Mrs. Floyd Hassell of George Court,
Bellport, was their grandson, Gregory
Hassell of Scituate, Mass.
Hunter Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Dorsey Smith of Bellport Lane, is home
for the summer from the Salisbury
School, Conn.
Mr. and Mrs. William Cherney of Fuoco
Street spent the weekend on a fishing trip
at Montauk Point with 10 couples from
the Sperry Gyroscope Company. Mrs.
Cherney won a trophy for the largest
fish caught.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cornacchiulo of
Country Greens Drive held a coffee
get-together Monday evening for Mrs.
Roberta Fishman, Mrs. Mary Baker and
David Karlen, candidates running for
CSD No. 4 school board.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bilde of Bellport
wish to announce the engagement of
their daughter, Barbara Ann, to Charles
A. Re Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Re
of Southold. Miss Bilde graduated from
Bellport High School in 1970 and is a June
graduate of Suffolk County Community
College. Mr. Re, after graduating in 1965
from Southold High School, served four
years with the U.S. Air Force. He is
employed as a ranger with the Parks
Department. No date has been set for the
wedding.
John Edward Petrow, son of Mr. and
Mrs. John Petrow of Jamaica Avenue,
Medford, received his B.A. degree in
political science from Hartwick College,
Oneonta, N.Y., and was on the Dean’s List
for the past two years. He will continue
his studies at Brooklyn Law School in
the fall.

An attached garage was destroyed,
but the Patchogue Fire Department
managed to save an unoccupied home
at 6 Leo Street, Patchogue, early Sunday
morning. The flames billowed through
a breezeway and were licking at the
home’s kitchen door when the volunteers
cut them off with a wall of water at
about 4:20 a.m. The home is owned by
Joseph Lombard of Greenville Avenue,
Patchogue, and up until last week had
been occupied by tenants.
St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church,
South Ocean Avenue and Amity
Street, Patchogue, held a renovation
dedication Sunday along ecumenical
lines. The landmarked building has been
completely renovated inside and outside
and a Thanksgiving Mass for Donors
was celebrated, with clergymen and
lay leaders participating. The building,
erected in 1888, was moved from the
corner of Conklin Avenue and East Main
Street to its present site about 65 years
ago.
Paul A. Pisoni of River Avenue
graduated with a bachelor’s degree
in business administration at
commencement exercises held Sunday
on the main campus of Hofstra University
in Hempstead.
Jeffrey Mayer, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Mayer of Clark Street, received
a Bachelor of Science degree May 26
from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
He majored in commercial floriculture.
He was active in the Cornell flower
judging team and was floriculture class
representative. He plans on an extended
work-study tour through Europe.
A hole in one was made by Edward
Beebe, a longtime resident of Blue Point
now living in Patchogue, at the Middle
Island Country Club, last Friday. Ed
started playing golf about five years ago.
He is no stranger to sports, however; as
a former member of a softball team, he
also bowls for Casey’s in Patchogue and
is well known in Blue Point fishing and
hunting circles.
Miss Rochelle Spiro, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Julius Spiro of Gillette Avenue,
a sophomore at Syracuse University, was
presented the Marion A. Jones Fund
Award in synesthetic education at the
college’s annual Honors Convocation
May 6. The award was in the amount of
$100. Miss Spiro is a sophomore in the
School of Arts.
The marriage of Mr. and Mrs.
William Ott took place May 20 in St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church, Patchogue.
Mr. Ott and his bride, the former Miss
Patricia Ann Tooker of North Patchogue,
spent a week in Western New York and
are at home in North Patchogue. The
bridegroom is employed in Central
School District 5, Dix Hills.
Reporting for duty is Maritime
Corporal Stephen G. Armstrong, son of
Mrs. Anne L. Armstrong of Swan River
Street, Patchogue. He is serving at the
Maritime Corps Air Station, El Toro,
Calif.

Miss Barbara Jean Gardner, daughter
of Mrs. Jane Gardner of George Court,
Bellport, is on the Dean’s List after
completing her sophomore year at Boston
University. Mrs. Gardner recently had
an article published in the Cuis En Aire
Reporter, a magazine for parents and
educators. She is a kindergarten teacher
at the Brookhaven Elementary School.
The Rotzinger brothers of General
McLean Drive recently closed out
impressive track seasons. Eric, a senior
at Seton Hall, ran the half-mile leg as the
Eagles won their section of the distance
medley event at the Suffolk Officials
Relays, under the lights May 30. Kurt, a
St. John the Baptist sophomore, won a
second-place trophy in the open 440-yard
relay. The following Saturday he was
awarded his varsity letter at his school’s
annual sports awards dinner.
Mrs. Dot Cox and her daughter,
Melinda, of Second Street recently spent
the weekend with Mrs. Cox’s daughter
and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George
Kerner of Brookfield, Conn.
Enjoying their wedding reception
at Christ Episcopal Hall, Bellport,
were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tyler, after
their marriage April 22 in Mt. Olive
Baptist Church, Medford. Following a
tour of Pennsylvania, the couple took
up residence in Patchogue. Bride, the
former Miss Linda Ruth Hires of Bellport,
is a substitute teacher in Bellport Middle
School, where the bridegroom is also employed.
Members of the Bonanza Club attended
the Nassau Coliseum last Wednesday
evening to see the Lawrence Welk Show.
Those attending were Miss Josephine
Costanzo, Mrs. Mary B. Fuoco, Mrs. Mary
R. Fuoco, Mrs. Anna Maletta, Mrs. Sinde
Satornino and Mrs. Josephine Stephani.
A 17-foot blue fiberglass Aerocraft
boat and its 50-horsepower Mercury
outboard motor were stolen at the
Squassux Landing on Beaver Dam
Road, Brookhaven. Owned by Harold
W. Sylvester of Old Stump Road,
Brookhaven, the value of the boat and
motor was set at $1,800. Mrs. Sylvester
said yesterday that the boat was
recovered but not the motor. She said
this was the second time a motor was
stolen, and that they have sold the boat
because they can’t afford to buy a new motor every week.

Mrs. Rose Perry of Robert Street,
Patchogue, has earned the current Yard
of the Month Award, sponsored by the
Patchogue Civic and Garden Club, in
her area. Mrs. Perry, who is 75 years old,
does all her own work in maintaining
her beautiful garden and lawn.
Paul H. Nulty, son of Mrs. Catherine
Dayton of Campbell Street and Lt.
Wallace Nulty of the Suffolk County
Police Force, who lives on Woodside
Avenue, has graduated cum laude
June 3 with a B.A. degree in business
administration, from Golden Gate
College, San Francisco, Calif. Mr. Nulty
and his wife, Etta Mae, live with their
son, Matthew, in Brightwaters.
Miss Mary Pausewang, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Pausewang of Lee
Avenue, has been named to the Dean’s
List for the winter-spring semester at
Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y. She is a
freshman majoring in liberal arts.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sweda Sr., of
Washington Avenue celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary at a buffet
dinner and lawn party held June 11 at
the home of their son and daughterin-
law, Edward Jr. and Virginia Sweda
of Donegan Avenue, East Patchogue.
Thomas Sweda, eldest son of Mr. and
Mrs. Sweda Sr., also attended with wife
Virginia and children, along with many
family members and friends. Father
James Bergen of St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church offered a special mass in
their honor on Saturday, June 10.
Petty Officer 2/c Edwin Becht Jr. is
serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS
Saratoga in the Gulf of Tonkin. The son
of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Becht of Franklin
Street, he is married to the former Miss
Victoria Gail MacNamara of Florida.
They have one son, Christopher Scott.
United in marriage May 20 in Emanuel
Lutheran Church, Patchogue, were
Mr. and Mrs. John Joseph McAvoy. One
hundred guests celebrated with them
at the Medford Brau Haus after the
ceremony. Mr. McAvoy and his bride,
the former Miss Linda Steininger of
Patchogue, are making their home in Spring Valley, N.Y.
On his way to the Mediterranean is Navy
Fireman James M. Lotito, son of Mr. and
Mrs. James M. Lotito of Jayne Avenue,
Patchogue. He is aboard the guided
missile frigate USS William H. Standley,
which, homeported at Mayport, Fla.,
is escorting the aircraft carrier USS America.
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital
Candystripers Debra Lenowitz and Joyce
Paduano of Patchogue, Barbara Gratson
of Center Moriches and Kathleen
Murphy of Ronkonkoma were awarded
scholarship grants given by the women
volunteers and auxilians at the hospital.
They received $500, $350, $350 and $300,
respectively, which will go towards
their future nursing studies. This is
the largest amount given to date by the
hospital’s executive council of auxilians
and volunteers, of which Mrs. Anthony
Quartuccio is president.
Miss Terri Felder of Taylor Avenue, East
Patchogue, was crowned queen of the
Junior Prom of Bellport High School’s
Senior Prom, held at the Mid Island
Country Club, June 12. Miss Felder has
also been inducted into the National Honor Society.
Janet Gardner, daughter of Mrs. Jane
Gardner of George Court, Bellport,
recently graduated with honors from
Northeastern University in Boston,
Mass. Jane received her Bachelor of
Science degree in political science.
The Kreamer Street Elementary
School first-grade classes of Mrs. Louise
Rossi, Mrs. Betty Weldon and Mrs. Rene
Richardson rode the Long Island Rail
Road last Thursday to Montauk Point,
where they took a bus tour around the
town, stopping at the lighthouse and the
lobster house. Each class was escorted by their class mothers.
Anthony Giordano of Maple Avenue
celebrated his 84th birthday Monday
with his family and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Maler of Sipp
Avenue, East Patchogue, announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Pamela, to Charles Zavesky, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Zavesky of Circuit
Road, Bellport. Both Miss Maler and
Mr. Zavesky are graduates of Bellport
High School. The wedding is planned for early next June.
Marine Corporal John F. Hafemeister,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hafemeister
of Atlantic Avenue, Blue Point, was
promoted to his present rank while
serving at the Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan.

The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. James
McGowan took place on June 24 at St.
Joseph’s R.C. Church, East Patchogue.
Following a trip to New England and
Nova Scotia, Canada, they will reside in
East Patchogue. Bride is the former Miss Gloria
Hansen of East Patchogue works for the Village
of Patchogue. Bridegroom, from Blue Point, is a
chemistry teacher and coach at Bellport High School.
Miss Debra R. Judelson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Morton Judelson of
South Ocean Avenue, Patchogue, a
junior at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., has
been honored by being the recipient of
the Metallurgy and Materials Science
Prize, given to a member of the junior
class for outstanding achievement in
materials science. Miss Judelson has
been accepted in the joint Harvard and
MIT medical engineering program for September.
The marriage of Miss Joan Tierney to
Glenn Richard Diener, both of Patchogue,
took place June 11 in the Congregational
Church, Patchogue. Mr. and Mrs. Diener
went to upstate New York before making
their home in Patchogue. He has enlisted
in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Harry D. Greenberg of Roe Boulevard is
enrolled for summer classes at Memphis
State University, Memphis, Tenn.

Boatswains Mate 2/c Paul Peluso,
Patchogue High School Class of 1968,
serving aboard the guided missile
destroyer USS C.V. Ricketts, was
awarded the Navy and Marine Corps
Medal by the President of the United
States for heroism. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Peluso of Medford, and
was awarded the medal for an attempted
rescue of a shipmate on the high seas,
who had been washed overboard in
exceptionally rough water.
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Laurinaitis Sr., of
McDonald Avenue, Bellport, entertained
at a graduation party on Saturday for
their son, Vincent Jr., who graduated
from Bellport High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Regalmuto of North
Howells Point Road entertained at a
party for relatives and friends on Sunday
in honor of the graduation of their son
Mark from Bellport High School.
Miss Julia Bergin, daughter of Mrs.
Gwendolyn Bergin of Thornhedge Road,
was recently named to the Dean’s List
at Mount Ida Junior College, Newton
Centre, Mass. She has just completed
her freshman year and is enrolled in the
physical education program of study.
Army Private Robert P. Kropp, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard F. Kropp of
South Country Road, Bellport, recently
completed a 10-week medical corpsman
course at the Medical Training Center,
Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Navy Fireman Thomas H. Trautwein,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Trautwein
of Price Street, Bellport, graduated
recently from recruit training at the
Naval Training Center, Orlando, Fla.
George S. Mistler spent the weekend at
the home of his daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Strier of Bainbridge, N.Y.
While there he attended the graduation
of his granddaughter, Robin Strier, from
Bainbridge Guilford Central School.
Robert DiDio, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Angelo DiDio of New Jersey Avenue,
after receiving his diploma from Bellport
High School June 22, plus the Cpl.
Thomas Palladino Scholarship from
the Hagerman Fire Department and a
two-year scholarship from Patchogue
Kiwanis Club, was honored with a
graduation party at his home. He will
attend Suffolk Community College in the fall.
Nelson Charles Briggs, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Nelson Briggs Jr. of Edgar Avenue,
Brookhaven, celebrated his 7th birthday
last Friday at school with his classmates,
and on Saturday he celebrated with his family.
The following four Boy Scouts from
Brookhaven recently earned their
Highway Conservation Badge: Philip
Watson, Mark Rogers, Tom Rich and Fred
Rich. John Friedel, Doigh Stewart and
Tom Rich from the troop swam from the
end of Mott Lane to Buoy 5 in the Great
South Bay last Saturday.
