Ray H. Thomas, one of Patchogue’s leading
citizens, buyer of men’s furnishings for
Swezey’s Department stores, honorary
member of the Patchogue Rotary
Club, and married almost 56 years, is
celebrating his 60 years in retailing by
keeping busy. He has spent 37 of those
years in Patchogue, first as manager of
the former J.C. Penney store on South
Ocean Avenue, and now as an active
member of the staff of both Swezey’s
Department stores in Patchogue and Riverhead.
Smiles were in order for Mr. and Mrs.
David Deatrich after their wedding
ceremony at St. Francis de Sales R.C.
Church, Patchogue, June 25. Following
a trip to Maine, they are residing in
Terryville. Bride is the former Miss
Theresa Maureen Nesbitt of Patchogue.
Mrs. Ida E. Butler of Patchogue celebrated
her 90th birthday at a barbecue given
for her July 23 by her grandniece, Mrs.
Joyce Suli of Patchogue, at Mrs. Suli’s
home. Mrs. Butler, widow of the late
Judge Charles N. Butler Jr., has been
active in the Patchogue Congregational
Church, the Daughters of the American
Revolution, Sorosis, and the Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs.
Butler and her husband, childless
themselves, raised two children of
Mrs. Butler’s sister, the late Mrs. Lillian
Batey. The birthday celebrant is looking
forward, she says, to her 100th birthday.
Staff Sergeant Thomas E. Dewar, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Dewar of
Harris Street, Patchogue, promoted to
his present rank, has been assigned
to a unit of the Air Force (aerospace)
Systems Command as a heating systems
specialist, at L.G. Hanscom Field, Mass.
Navy Lieutenant Ralph Pierno, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Angelo R. Pierno of Cedar
Avenue, Patchogue, has been awarded
the Navy Commendation Medal with
Combat “V” for his outstanding work
in Vietnam as maintenance officer and
test pilot for Light Helicopter Attack
Squadron Three, from July 1971 to
February 1972. He was given the award
during ceremonies at the Naval Air
Station, Pensacola, Fla.
Mr. and Mrs. George Ferdinand of
Washington Place, Patchogue, announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Deborah, to Howard Calderon, son of
Mrs. Leila Calderon of Kane Avenue,
Medford. Miss Ferdinand, a Patchogue
High School graduate, is employed at
Great Eastern, Patchogue. Mr. Calderon
works in the Patchogue Post Office. The
wedding is planned for next May.
The South Country Lions Club of
East Patchogue donated food recently
through Father Richardson of St.
Joseph the Worker R.C. Church in East
Patchogue to flood relief victims, to
be distributed through the Rockville
Centre Diocese. Lions Gene Garruppo and
Frank Aragona helped transport the boxes of food.
Miss Barbara Jean Gardner of George
Court, Bellport, recently was surprised
at a bridal shower given in her honor by
Miss Chris Stanion of Brookhaven, for 60
relatives and friends. Guests attending
the wedding of Miss Gardner to Kevin
McQuade July 22 were from Columbia,
Md., Syracuse, Cortland, Pittsford, Rock
Hill, Brownsville, N.Y., and Cliffside Park, N.J.
Robert Brouwer, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Brouwer of North Howells
Point Road, recently spent two weeks at
Andrews-by-the-Sea Hockey School in
New Brunswick, Canada.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Quatrochi and family
of Circuit Road have returned from
Shaftsbury, Vt., after spending a few days.
Malcolm Johnson of Country Club Road
and Robert Mahoney of Bieselin Road
attended the National Championship
Field Archery Tournament in Ludlow,
Mass., last week. Robert Mahoney won
fourth place in the Youth Freestyle A Class.
Kevin Faison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar
Faison of Country Greens Drive, has
returned from Northern Frontier Camp
after spending a few weeks.
Miss Louise Herrera, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John Herrera of Baycrest Lane, is
spending two weeks with Miss Pamela
Furman and her parents in Stewart, Fla.
The Furmans are former residents of Bellport.
James Butler of Academy Lane has been
named to the 1972 spring Dean’s List of
the School of Business Administration
at Western New England College, Springfield, Mass.
Miss Janeane Flynn, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. John E. Flynn of Division
Avenue, Blue Point, who, as a member
of the Antonini School of Dance’s GAJR
Family Ballet, traveled by way of Milan
and Rome to Malta, July 13, to participate
in a performance at the Malta Hilton
for the benefit of the Villa Monsignor
Gonyi home for the handicapped. Miss
Flynn, before returning home July 23,
visited the Coliseum and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Air Force Senior Master Sergeant
Richard Tully, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Jackson of Liberty Street, Patchogue,
has received a certificate of achievement
at Charleston AFB, South Carolina,
in recognition of his outstanding
contribution to the Military Airlift
Command conservation program. He is
an aircraft systems superintendent.
The Patchogue Knights of Columbus
will sponsor a concert featuring Buddy
Greco and Frank Fontaine on Oct. 5
at the K of C Hall, Railroad Avenue,
Patchogue. All proceeds will go to the
purchasing of a hemodialysis machine
for Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Dick
Carrabus is general chairman and Mrs.
Dorothy Samek is co-chairman of the event.
Mrs. Shirly Robinson of Jennings
Avenue has been appointed deputy
grand regent of the State of New York for
the Women of the Moose, the women’s
division of the Loyal Order of Moose.
Facing their new life together are
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Steve Kolakoski,
wedded June 17 at St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church, Patchogue. They greeted
their guests at the Medford Brau Haus
and are at home in Bohemia. Bride is
the former Miss Linda Jean Hope of Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. John Cheripinsky of
Patchogue announce the engagement
of their daughter, Donna Lee, to James
Edwin Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin
Meyer of Patchogue. Miss Cheripinsky,
who attended Patchogue High School,
is employed by Jack in the Box in
Patchogue. Mr. Meyer is a 1969 graduate
of Patchogue High School. He is in the
employ of Triangle Pacific in Medford. A
fall wedding is planned.
As part of their diversified youth
activities program, the Patchogue Lodge
of Elks last Sunday sponsored their
annual New York Mets Day by taking
two busloads of young baseball fans to
Shea Stadium. The group might have
been just the medicine the Mets needed,
because Yogi Berra’s charges, who have
been stumbling over everything in sight,
tamed the Chicago Cubs by a score of
12-2. The program was headed by youth
chairman Jack Konrad.
Members of a missile maintenance
unit in the Strategic Air Command,
named the best for 1971, are Staff
Sergeant Lawrence E. Puls, son of Mr.
and Mrs. William G. Puls of Rose Street,
Patchogue, and Sergeant John P. Csabon,
son of Mr. and Mrs. George Csabon of
Bay Fair Drive, Shirley, both stationed at
Griffiss AFB, N.Y. Sgt. Puls is a missile
electronics systems technician. Sgt.
Csabon is a missile electronics systems specialist.
Airman Glen H. Leonard, son of Roy
F. Leonard of Roosevelt Boulevard,
East Patchogue, after completing basic
training at the Air Training Command’s
Lackland AFB, Texas, has been assigned
to Lowry AFB, Colo., for specialized
training in the supply field.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wilson and
children, Jimmy and Peggy Ann of
Country Club Road, Bellport, recently
returned home after touring Ireland.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Igoe and children,
Scott, Steven, Peter and Paige of Bieselin
Road, have returned home after spending
a month vacationing at Lake George, N.Y.

Miss Karen Smith, daughter of Mr. and

been named to the Dean’s List at Curry
College in Milton, Mass. She will be in
her junior year for the fall semester.
Reid Terwilliger of Circuit Road
received his Bachelor of Science degree
at commencement in June from the
University of Rochester.
Miss Karen Hermus, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Francis Hermus of North
Brewster Lane, left July 30 for Fort
Mitchell, Ky., for two weeks’ training
with the Internal Revenue Service at the
Cincinnati Center. Over the weekend she
visited King’s Island in Ohio.
A family barbecue was held Saturday
evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Van
der Zalm of Head of the Neck Road. It
was a birthday party in honor of Mrs.
Van der Zalm’s father, Frank Craven of
Brookhaven.
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Satterley and son,
Nickie, of Country Club Road returned
home Sunday from visiting relatives in
Mount Clemens, Mich., and upstate New York.
Miss Melinda Cox, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Stanley Cox of Second Street,
celebrated her 9th birthday at a luncheon
and pool party last Friday. Her guests
were Hannah Block, Claire Hutchins,
Ester Langer, Diane Penny, Elaine Warner
and Laurie Werner. Melinda is spending
this week at Camp Edey in Bayport.
Mary David, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Donald David of Locust Road,
Brookhaven, celebrated her 10th birthday
Aug. 5. To help Mary celebrate with
dinner were: Nicky Delhas, Katy Lester,
Monica Miller and Lori Curiale. After
dinner the four girls slept outside in a
parachute tent furnished with cushions.

Miss Maria Elena Agone, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Agone of Ohls
Street, Patchogue, has enrolled at the
Katherine Gibbs School in Huntington
for the one-year secretarial course,
beginning in September.
Mr. and Mrs. George L. Conklin of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Patchogue,
were feted Aug. 13 at Pulaski Hall on
Falcon Avenue, at a belated golden
wedding anniversary celebration. They
were married Feb. 11, 1922 in Patchogue.
The 75 family and friends attending the
celebration were served a buffet and
danced to the music of Tommy Burnett.
Toastmaster was Alexander Zelenski,
a son-in-law, and a special toast was
proposed by Milton Osman, the couple’s best man.
Mr. and Mrs. William P. Carleton of
Shore Road, Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Barbara
Anne, to Joseph D. Porter, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Gerald D. Porter of Portsmouth,
Ohio. Miss Carleton is a graduate of
Patchogue High School and is attending
Ohio University. Mr. Porter, who received
a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio
University, will be teaching mathematics
at Valley High School, Lucasville, Ohio,
in September. A winter wedding is planned.
Aboard the Navy’s newest destroyer
escort, USS Donald B. Beary, is Seaman
Robert Harm, son of Mrs. Gladys
Harm of Fry Boulevard, Patchogue.
The ship, newly commissioned this
month in Boston, Mass., is designed for
antisubmarine and antiaircraft warfare,
homeported in Norfolk, Va.
Peter Felice, who recently retired
after having served the Patchogue
Village Highway Department for 12
years, was presented with a certificate
of appreciation by mayor Robert T.
Waldbauer, who extolled Mr. Felice’s
work for the community at Monday
night’s meeting of the village board.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kaznowski Sr.,
of Falcon Avenue, Patchogue, announce
the engagement of their daughter, Linda,
to George Avery, son of Mrs. Arthur J.
Avery of Medford. A September wedding is planned.
GMC 2 George Bostic Jr., of the U.S.
Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bostic
of West Yaphank Road, Gordon Heights,
received his honorable discharge at the
Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Ill.,
in July, after having served a six-year
tour of duty. He plans to enter college in
Chicago in the fall.
Fredd Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas H. Gordon of Bellport, received
his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude,
recently from the State University of
New York at Stony Brook. He is now
attending New York University, working
towards his master’s degree.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Stakes of Fairway
Drive have been entertaining Mrs. Stakes’
parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Brewer, from
Chadwell Heath, Essex County, England,
for the past two weeks.
Mrs. George S. Mistler of Woodland
Park Road was host at a party for the
birthday of Mrs. Olga Zeidler Sr., of
Patchogue, and the belated birthday
of Mrs. Ferde Mistler of Medford, last
Monday. Fifteen old friends attended the celebration.
Michael Mullaney, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Mullaney of South Howells Point
Road, is home after serving his second
year with the Peace Corps in Korea. He
will return to Korea for his third year.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Freitag of
Bellport announce the engagement
of their daughter, Rita Joy, to Paul W.
Switzer, son of Mr. and Mrs. James
Switzer of Bellport. A January wedding is planned.
The reading aides from the Kreamer
Street Elementary School got together
for a mid-summer reunion for dinner at
the Pine Grove Inn last Thursday.
After a seven-week stay at Isle au
Haut, Maine, Mr. and Mrs. David Jacobus
have returned to their home on Academy Lane.
Mr. and Mrs. John Mehrman and family
of Brewster Lane spent last week at their
cottage in Treadwell, N.Y.
Mrs. Francis Hermus of Brewster Lane
and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Waldron of
Brookhaven flew to Albany Monday
evening to visit Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Hull
of Vicher’s Ferry. They went sightseeing
before driving back to Bellport. Mr. and
Mrs. Hull returned with Mrs. Hermus
and are visiting with her now.

Greg Pilger, of the Pilger Agency, and
Dr. George Becker, dental surgeon, were
inducted as new members of the Rotary
Club of Patchogue last week.
Mrs. Charlotte Gallo just celebrated
25 years as pianist for the Patchogue
Moose, Chapter 476. Mrs. Gallo’s father
was a charter member of the Patchogue
lodge. For 35 years as an organist she has
played in Hagerman, Bellport and in St.
Francis de Sales in Patchogue. Although
Mrs. Gallo is supposed to be retired,
she has started a senior citizens club in
North Patchogue, is active in the Moose
and is a great-grandmother.
The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Charles Dudek was solemnized June
25 at the United Methodist Church of
Patchogue. Mr. Dudek and his bride,
the former Miss Patricia Jean Carde of
Patchogue, held their reception at the
Bavarian Inn, Lake Ronkonkoma, and
spent a week at Niagara Falls. They are
living at Nelson Court, Blue Point, until
their own home is completed.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Payne of
Lakewood Street, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood
Payne of Clark Street, Mrs. Frances
Payne and Mrs. Gladys Schmitt, both of
Patchogue, were guests at a champagne
luncheon Aug. 13 at Fox Hollow Inn,
Woodbury, honoring the golden wedding
anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph H.
Butler Sr., of Huntington. Both Charles
and Elwood Payne are brothers of Mrs.
Butler, who is the former Miss Edna Mae
Payne. Mr. Butler, a retired advertising
executive, founded and headed Butler
Advertising, a Manhattan agency.
Mrs. Delia H. Van Vleck of Bay Avenue,
who recently attended a residential
seminar as one of the requirements for
the Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree
at the University of Oklahoma, was
granted her degree at the university this summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Ingerman of
Howard Street, Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Candyce
M., to Arney Lee Kaufman, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Morton Kaufman of Spring Valley,
N.Y. Miss Ingerman was graduated from
the University of Bridgeport in June,
with a major in elementary education.
Mr. Kaufman will be graduated from the
University of Bridgeport this coming
June, where he is majoring in political
science. A June 1973 wedding is planned.
Miss Sharon T. Gavin, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Nicholas Gavin of Hayward
Street, a June graduate of Bucknell
University, Pa., has been named to the
Dean’s List at Bucknell for the spring semester.
Listed as one of more than 300 cadets
of the State University of New York
Maritime College scheduled to leave the
Bronx campus pier at Fort Schuyler,
July 21, for a six-week training cruise,
was Robert F. Deedy, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Deedy of Washington
Avenue. Aboard the Empire State IV, the
cadets’ first call of port was Edinburgh,
Scotland, and then Antwerp, Belgium on
the return trip to New York.
David J. Girshoff of North Ocean
Avenue has been named to the Dean’s
List at the College of Arts and Sciences
at the University of Vermont.
Anthony R. Maletta III, of Hagerman,
and Bruce Feinberg, of Patchogue,
dockmasters at Davis Park, will be
leaving their posts this week. Mr. Maletta
will go to Milwaukee, Wis., to attend
Marquette University. Mr. Feinberg is
returning to Georgetown University,
Washington, D.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Patrick McBride of
Erving Avenue, East Patchogue, have
returned home after spending five days
in Saratoga Springs.
Miss Terry Felder of Taylor Avenue and
Miss Jodi Gerard of Durkee Lane have
been chosen to represent Bellport Senior
High School on the A&S Teen Board for
the coming year.
Returning home after a one-month
vacation at Madison, N.H., are the Rev.
and Mrs. Frederick I. Smith of South
Brewster Lane, Bellport. Miss Laurel Sue
Smith will leave tomorrow to attend the
State University of New York at Fredonia
College for her freshman year.
Thomas W. Shreeve, son of Dr. and
Mrs. Walton Shreeve of Bellport Lane,
will be married on Aug. 31 to Miss Molly
Hasson, South Woodstock, Vt. Thomas
has recently completed a tour of duty
in the U.S. Marine Corps and will be
attending graduate school in New York City.
Chester Arthur Jr. celebrated his 14th
birthday Sunday at a party for family
and friends, given by his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Chester Arthur of Bell Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Ignatius Decidue of
George Court, Bellport, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Linda, to
Duke Anthony Colichio, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Anthony Colichio of Amsterdam
Avenue, East Patchogue. Miss Decidue
is a recent graduate of Bellport Senior
High School. Mr. Colichio is a graduate
of Mercy High School, Riverhead, and
has completed four years at Strayer
College in Washington, D.C., receiving
his business administration degree. No
date has been set for the wedding.
Jennifer Baker, 11, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John Baker of Beaver Dam Road,
Brookhaven, came away from the Middle
Island Horse Show recently with a first
and a third winning ribbon. Jennifer
has only owned the horse for one month,
which makes the feat of winning even finer.
