The Patchogue Civic and Garden
Club, with the cooperation of the Patchogue
Village Recreation and Parks
Department, performed its yearly service
to the community Saturday by
planting flowers and shrubs at the Patchogue
Railroad Depot. Those members
taking part in the planting were: Mrs.
Minnie Mohr, Mrs. Helen Peterson, Mrs.
Hilda Edelstein and Eleanor Ransome.
OT2 Class Petty Officer Robert Gray Jr.
just returned to Barbados, West Indies,
after spending a 30-day leave home.
Petty Officer Gray has been stationed in
Barbados for two and a half years with
the U.S. Navy. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Gray of Waverly Avenue, Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Rignola of Furman
Avenue celebrated their 25th wedding
anniversary May 26 with a party
given by their children, Mr. and Mrs.
David Scotti, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ranatlia
and Annette Rignola. The party was
held at the VFW Hall in Patchogue
with nearly 200 friends and relatives attending.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stockmar of Sycamore
Street, Patchogue, have made
known the engagement of their daughter,
Robin, to Don Merritt of Bayport. Miss
Stockmar is a graduate of Patchogue
High School and is presently employed
by Marine Midland Bank in Bellport.
Mr. Merritt is a graduate of James
Wilson Young High School in Bayport
and is employed by Metropolitan Life
Insurance Company in Manhattan. An
October wedding is planned.
Simone M. Pelzman of Swan Lake Drive
was awarded the degree of Bachelor of
Arts in biology by Manhattanville College
in Purchase this month.
The Patchogue Fishing Club held its
annual Flounder Derby at Promised
Land, and 55 members attended. The
winners were Bruce Wolfson, 2 pounds, 7
ounces, and Al Gerle, 2 pounds, 3 ounces.
Felice P. Iasevoli of Jones Street graduated
from Iowa State University on
Saturday with a degree in zoology.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph “Jack” Funaro of
Waverly Avenue celebrated their 25th
anniversary on May 21 at a party given
by their four children, JoAnn, Joseph Jr.,
Kathleen and Eunice Jr. The wedding anniversary
was held at their home, where
nearly 50 relatives and friends enjoyed
a buffet-style meal.
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Longo of Patchogue
announce the engagement of
their daughter, Madeline Mary, to Raymond
Edward Brault Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs.
Raymond Brault of Brooklyn. Madeline
graduated from Patchogue High School
and received her diploma at BOCES as
an EDP keypunch operator. Mr. Brault,
the oldest in a family of nine children,
is presently employed as a sheet metal
mechanic. A November wedding is planned.
Miss Vanessa Santo of South Country
Road, East Patchogue, was crowned
Miss New York State for 1973 on May
24 at Tamarack Lodge in Greenfield
Park, N.Y. Miss Santo graduated from
Bellport High School in February and
is employed by a local figure salon. She
will compete in the Miss USA Pageant
in Binghamton, N.Y. in September.
Mrs. Diane Giattino of Country Greens
Drive, Bellport, was surprised on May
21 at a baby shower given in her honor
at the home of Mrs. Annette Riccardi of
Country Greens Drive. The shower was
given by Mrs. Riccardi, Mrs. Frances
Cornacchiulo, Mrs. Cathy DiMaio, Mrs. Sandra
McInturff, Mrs. Marie Tutino and Mrs. Barbara Peeling.
Thomas Florio, son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Florio of General McLean Drive, is
home for the summer from High Point
College, N.C., where he completed his junior year.
Diane Rene of Maple Avenue, Bellport,
Deborah Call and Jodi Gerard, both of East
Patchogue, have returned home from
their senior trip to Washington, D.C.,
with the Bellport High School.

News of recent graduations: Miss
Diane Gerard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Russell Gerard of Conklin Avenue,
Patchogue, received her B.A. degree
Sunday at Rider College, Trenton, N.J.
She majored in elementary education.
Miss Pamela M. Borzi, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip L. Borzi of Case
Avenue, Patchogue, was graduated
May 20 from the College of St. Rose
in Albany, N.Y. She was awarded a
B.S. degree in education, with a minor
in biology. She plans to teach on the
elementary level. Jack Hartman, son
of Mrs. Mary Hartman of Washington
Avenue, Patchogue, graduated
Saturday from Concordia Senior
College, Fort Wayne, Ind., with a B.A.
degree. He plans to enter Concordia
Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., in the fall.
Miss Barbabra Wicks of Oak Street,
Patchogue, has been accepted into the
Green Key Honor Society at the State
University Agricultural and Technical
College at Delhi, N.Y. She is a senior in
the agriculture division.
Mrs. Mary Maniacci of Patchogue
has announced the engagement of her
daughter, Barbara, to John Lund, son
of Mrs. Florence Lund of Patchogue.
Both Miss Maniacci and Mr. Lund are
Patchogue High School graduates. Miss
Maniacci is a switchboard operator.
Mr. Lund is employed as a contract
worker. The wedding will take place
March 24, 1973.
Exotic Dancer Five, a joint-service
amphibious assault training exercise,
was shared by Marine Corporal Robert
J. Haack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto
Haack of Truberg Avenue, Patchogue,
at Camp LeJeune, N.C., and the waters offshore.
Pam and Jayme Backes of Hedges
Avenue East Patchogue, participated
recently in the Patricia Wakim Dance
Recital. They both received a trophy
for perfect attendance.
The South Country Lions Club
received this year’s Governor’s Award
for membership development and
retention. There are 69 Lions Clubs
in Suffolk County and each year one
club’s achievement stands out among
the rest. Officers of the South Country
Lions are: Frank Tortorella, president;
Justin Spisto, first vice president;
Jack Gazzola, second vice president;
Bill Gazzola, secretary; Frank Aragona,
treasurer; Richard Reib, lion tamer;
Gene Garruppo, tail twister, and Bill
Linsalato, zone chairman.
Spending several days with Mr. and
Mrs. Floyd Hassell of George Court,
Bellport, was their grandson, Gregory
Hassell of Scituate, Mass.
Hunter Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Dorsey Smith of Bellport Lane, is home
for the summer from the Salisbury School, Conn.
Mr. and Mrs. William Cherney of
Fuoco Street spent the weekend on a
fishing trip at Montauk Point with 10
couples from the Sperry Gyroscope
Company. Mrs. Cherney won a trophy
for the largest fish caught.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cornacchiulo of
Country Greens Drive held a coffee
get-together Monday evening for Mrs.
Roberta Fishman, Mrs. Mary Baker and
David Karlen, candidates running for
CSD No. 4 school board.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bilde of Bellport
wish to announce the engagement of
their daughter, Barbara Ann, to Charles
A. Re Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Re of Southold. Miss Bilde graduated
from Bellport High School in 1970 and
is a June graduate of Suffolk County
Community College. Mr. Re, after
graduating in 1965 from Southold High
School, served four years with the U.S.
Air Force. He is employed as a ranger
with the Parks Department. No date
has been set for the wedding.
John Edward Petrow, son of Mr. and
Mrs. John Petrow of Jamaica Avenue,
Medford, received his B.A. degree
in political science from Hartwick
College, Oneonta, N.Y., and was on the
Dean’s List for the past two years. He
will continue his studies at Brooklyn
Law School in the fall.

Miss New York State, Vanessa
Santo of East Patchogue, was a guest
at the monthly business meeting of
the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce
Tuesday. Miss Santo will represent
New York State in the Miss USA World
contest, to be held in Binghamton in
September.
Recently, five young Patchogue men
enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps’
180-day delay program and ground
enlistment options program. This
entitles them to postpone their date
of departure for recruit training and
to choose the job and number of years
they would like to remain in the corps.
They are: John Halford Jr., son of Mr.
and Mrs. John Halford; David Johnsen,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Johnsen;
Santo Di Stefano, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Vincenzo Di Stefano; Wayne Wonly, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Alois Wonly, and Kevin
Curry, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Curry, all
of Patchogue.
Miss Stephanie Benincase, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Benincase of
Fourth Street, Patchogue, became the
bride of Jacques Poirier, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Albert Poirier of Barton Avenue,
Patchogue, May 27 at Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel R.C. Church, Patchogue. The
bride wore her mother’s wedding gown
of antique white satin and lace.
John W. Ashline, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Ashline of Taber Street,
graduated cum laude May 27 from the
State University College of Arts and
Sciences at Plattsburgh, N.Y., with a BS
degree in elementary education.
Fifty New York State residents
earned baccalaureate degrees May 27
during commencement exercises held
at New England College in Henniker,
N.H., including Nancy Gould of Shore
Road, Patchogue. She received a BA
degree in psychology-sociology.

Mr. and Mrs. John Fleming of
Sharon Drive, Patchogue, announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Catherine Maureen, to George C.
Hulse Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. George
Hulse of James Street, Patchogue.
Miss Fleming is a 1973 graduate of
Patchogue-Medford High School and
is currently employed at the Union
Savings Bank in Patchogue. Mr. Hulse
is a 1971 graduate of Patchogue High
School and is currently employed at
Suffolk County Mosquito Control. A
June 22, 1974 wedding is planned.
Jon Rossi of Circuit Road, Bellport,
recently received three merit awards
from the Long Island Professional
Photographers Association. The three
winning portraits are currently on
display at the Marine Midland Tinker
National Bank in Bellport.
Leigh Baier, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Albert F. Baier of Bellhaven Road, is a
director of the Atlanta Polo Club and
one of its most active participants.
Although a novice at the game of polo,
Leigh has picked up the game rather
quickly and last season was the highscoring
rookie and is considered to be
the future “star” of the club.
Mrs. Pappalardo, Mrs. Polonski and
Mrs. Timm’s third-grade classes from
the Kreamer Street Elementary School
went on a class trip Monday to Smith’s
Point, Fire Island.
Recent houseguest of Mr. and Mrs.
Harmon Potter of Rogers Avenue was
Mrs. Charlotte Hennessey of Chicago, Ill.
Mr. and Mrs. F. Serafino of Fuoco
Lane, Bellport, wish to announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Francine, to Ernest J. Marshall Jr., of
Merrick. Miss Serafino is a graduate
of Bellport High School. Mr. Marshall
is a graduate of Sanford H. Calhoun
High School and is employed as an
electronics technician in Merrick.

Over 400 students will receive their
high school diplomas from Patchogue-
Medford High School Sunday. The 1973
graduating class is the largest in the district’s history.
Gary S. Heyman, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Leonard D. Heyman of Lincoln
Road, Patchogue, has been accepted as
a candidate for the Bachelor of Arts
degree, majoring in political science, at
Nathaniel Hawthorne College, Antrim,
N.H. Gary is a graduating senior at
Patchogue-Medford High, active in the
track team and was on the freshman
baseball and football teams.
Celebrating their 45th wedding
anniversary are Mr. and Mrs. Chad
Smith of Swezey Street. Their daughter
and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Deedy and their daughters, Barbara
and Phyllis, of Patchogue, gave a
surprise party in their honor on June
16 at the Patchogue Elks Club. Fifty
guests attended, including out-of-town
guests from Buffalo, West Sand Lake and Florida.
Mrs. Elaine Downs, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Edward S. Dew Jr., of
Patchogue, graduated June 1 from the
Ellis School of Nursing, Schenectady,
N.Y. She will begin work as a registered
nurse at an upstate hospital in July.
Mrs. Downs lives with her husband,
Daniel, in Schenectady. She is a
graduate of Patchogue High School.
Mrs. Marie Potucek of South Summit
Avenue entertained her cousin,
Mrs. Rita Zuanitta of Belluna, Italy,
after a separation of 27 years. Mrs.
Zuanitta also visited her other cousins,
the Mesdames Sophie Worrad, Viola
Pfundstein, June Schroder and Alfred
Garbarini, all of Patchogue.
Three area residents were among
those graduating from Southampton
College on June 7. Receiving Bachelor
of Arts degrees were Thomas K. Cullen
of General McLean Drive, Bellport;
Frank C. Hartmann of Narragansett
Avenue, East Patchogue; and Jeanne
Hudak of California Avenue, Medford.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Colicchio of
Scherger Avenue, East Patchogue,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Theresa Anne, to Brian
Wagner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Wagner of East Moriches. Miss
Colicchio is a graduate of Bellport
High School and attended Dowling
College. Mr. Wagner graduated from
Eastport High School in 1971. A spring
wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Adams of
Durkee Lane recently returned
from a one-month trip to England
and Scotland. While in England, the
Adamses visited Dr. and Mrs. Michael
Lancefield, former residents of Brookhaven.
Eric M. Suuberg of Southern
Boulevard was one of 71 recent
graduates of Massachusetts Institute
of Technology to be elected to the Xi
of Massachusetts chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Spending the weekend with Mr.
and Mrs. James Cumming of General
McLean Drive, Bellport, were Mr.
and Mrs. George Kadoguchi and
their children, Dawn and Grant, of
Honolulu, Hawaii.
Mr. and Mrs. James Giattino of
Country Greens Drive announce the
arrival of a baby girl, Melissa Diane, on
June 1. Welcoming Melissa home from
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital were
her sister Elise and her brother Jimmy.
Mr. Giattino received his master’s
degree in education from Iona College
in New Rochelle, N.Y., on June 2.
Mr. and Mrs. John Sieber of Ohio
Avenue, Medford, recently celebrated
their 65th wedding anniversary with a
party given by their children at the 112
of Medford. A roast beef dinner was
served to 75 guests. Hosts at the affair
were the couple’s five sons, Richard,
George, John, Henry and Albert Sieber.
Thomas M. Storch, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas L. Storch of Brook Run
Drive, Medford, received a Bachelor of
Science degree and was commissioned
an ensign in the Navy after graduating
from the U.S. Naval Academy. He is a
graduate of Seton Hall High School.

Michael Tortorella of Patchogue has
been named to the Dean’s List for the
academic quarter which ended June
8 at Florida Technological University.
Miss Pauline Marie Buhl, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Paul A. Buhl of Everett
Street, Patchogue, received her diploma
in nursing from the Kings Park
State Hospital School of Nursing at
commencement exercises held June
1. Miss Buhl is a graduate of Patchogue-
Medford High School, class of
1970. She is employed at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
Enjoying a moment after their marriage
ceremony were Mr. and Mrs.
Brian Fox, who were married May 20 in
St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church,
East Patchogue. Following a reception
at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Patchogue,
Mr. Fox and his bride, the former
Miss Sharon Fucci, left for a motor
trip to upstate New York.
Wayne Robert Monaco, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Monaco of West Woodside
Avenue, was guest of honor at a barbecue
with some 40 guests for his graduation
June 24 from Patchogue-Medford
High School. Wayne intends to further
his education in the field of art. Lori
Jean, Wayne’s sister, also graduated
from the eighth grade at Saxton Street Middle School.
Miss Terri Lea O’Neill, daughter of Mrs.
Mary O’Neill of Herbert Circle, graduated
Thursday from Emanuel Lutheran
School and was class valedictorian.
She will be entering Patchogue-Medford
High School in the fall. Her future
plans are to pursue her studies in the field of law.
Navy Seaman Apprentice Anthony J.
Puma, son of Mr. and Mrs. Biagino E.
Puma of Miller Star Route, Patchogue,
participated with his shipmates in a
Sickle Cell Anemia Fund drive aboard
his guided missile cruiser, homeported
at Mayport, Fla. His ship was the
top Atlantic Fleet contributor to the
drive, which aids those Black people
affected by the hereditary disease.
Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Schmohl of Clinton
Street, East Patchogue, had dinner
Saturday evening at the Playboy Club
in New York City to celebrate Mrs. Schmohl’s birthday.
Nicole Emma, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Richard Emma of Melrose Parkway,
celebrated her 6th birthday on
June 20 at a party given in her honor.
Helping her to celebrate were her
sisters, Cheryl, Suzette and Danielle, Sandra
Temple, Susan Cicalese, Laura Bagnoli,
Jeanmarie Barone, Dennine Boyle, Janet
Flanagan, Babette Hanlon, Sandra Collier
and Colleen McCann.
Several members of the Bellport
Fire Department attended the annual
New York Association of Fire Chiefs
at the Concord Hotel in Kiamesha
Lake, N.Y. Those attending were Chief
and Mrs. Chester Arthur, First Assistant
Chief and Mrs. Richard Harrow,
Commissioner and Mrs. Robert Wayte,
Commissioner and Mrs. Robert Langfeldt,
Commissioner and Mrs. Ed Bishop,
ex-Chief and Mrs. Quentin Reynolds
and ex-Chief and Mrs. William Hermus.
A farewell party was held for Mr.
and Mrs. Russell Cort of Leisurely
Lane, Bellport, who are moving to
Florida. The party was given by Mr.
and Mrs. Peter Paige, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey
McChesney and Mr. and Mrs. Peter
Snyder at the Paige home on Gerard Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Florio of General
McLean Drive recently returned from
a cruise aboard the SS Oceanic to Nassau, for one week.
Susan Kan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Kan of Circuit Road, will be
spending the summer with very good
friends, Mr. and Mrs. Julian Rodriguez Malo in Spain.
